Running your LED "neon" ornaments from USB - including a total screw-up

This video was a catalogue of disasters. I even said right at the beginning not to trust the red/black polarity marking in generic Chinese products. They literally use whatever colour of wire is available.
That said, this is a great way of saving the ongoing cost and inconvenience of using standard or rechargeable batteries. It lets you choose either the batteries or a USB power source.
You also have the option to change the LED strip to a colour of your choice, as it is widely available online. This strip is a 3V version. You also get direct 5V versions with a resistor per LED, and a 12V version too for handy off-grid illuminated ornaments.
The diode I used was a 1N4007, which is a very standard 1A 1000V diode. It's a component I think should be in everyone's universal component kit.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.c...
This also keeps the channel independent of RU-vid's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Clive, I couldn't see the switch up close. But if it is a double throw switch, then the USB port could be connected to it and the switch would take the place of the diodes - it would switch between batteries and USB. Also if the diodes were 1N5817 Schottky diodes j(1 amp), they would drop half as much as the 1N4007s.

Thankfully I check polarities as a habit, it saves me from the 'accidents', whether happy or not. Speaking of knots my Granny, who passed 50 years ago, tied a knot in her electric iron flex to slow down the heat of the aforementioned iron. She was shown that the dial can turn the heat down, but she stayed with the knot, albeit we turned the dial down too. Good post, very entertaining 😂 👏

These things actually used to have a switching adapter socket (that cuts off the batteries when a plug is inserted) on them but they left it out to save costs. I have 2 of the pink flamingo versions and you can still see where it used to sit in the mold of the case. You can just cut this out and glue one in and use a USB to standard DC plug lead. The advantage is that you don't have the lead attached when using it with batteries.

Discovering a 120v potential between what I *thought* was neutral and ground was not fun.

The wires in them were some of the best wire for USB I have ever seen, but the connector was "useless" so I was able to get them for very cheap. Used them for years on everything. The wires that are in cables now, are absolutely dreadful--even on expensive cables! Built to spec by the accountants, no doubt.

1:55 Ah yes, classic Chinese noodle wires 6:27 a little trick i'v been using data lines for if im not going to plug it into a computer is to use the data lines for battery voltage bus, so i can read the battery voltage , this can be useful for me if im putting in a stamp-size dc boosters, those for boosting household batteries to 5V,3V or 3.3V. i doubt external battery reading would be interesting for a cactus lamp , but for other things its handy. There are other ideas what i would use the data lines for, like cut away the usb plug as well, put on a new one and use 2 pairs of wires instead of a single wire for each polarity. Another idea could be to install a little Qualcoom trigger board , so you can get 9V and adjust the resistor , so you get a more brighter led light, maybe install a little trim potentiometer.

With that diode arrangement, would it not be more convenient (and maybe slightly more efficient) to use one of those dual diode components? The type which superficially looks a bit like a mosfet but is actually a pair of diodes with the central pin being the common anode. I think you can also get versions which are arranged the other way round, with the central pin as a common cathode instead. One or the other would work in this application. What I sometimes do is use one of each type connected back to back to make a schottky diode type bridge rectifier, with the two central pins being the DC output. This is also slightly more efficient than a conventional bridge rectifier since it has much less voltage drop over the diodes.

Tesco at Brooklands, Weybridge have their own version currently on half-price sale for £5. If they don't sell them, they'll probably go down to £2.50. Oddly, the pink flamingo version has only been reduced to £6.50. I got a better bargain, though. i bought a couple of fancy Calex led bulbs reduced from £8 each to £1.30, plus a Calex white lamp holder for £2.80, down from £15. They don't match the heated blanket I recently bought from Tesco for which I somehow managed to make a £1 profit!!

Not exactly the same, but I’ve converted a flickering LED candle that used to take 3x AA batteries to take a single 3.7v lithium cell from a “Vapor producing device”. This cell is charged by a simple TP4056 module that’s constantly hooked up to a 1A USB power supply. Been running nonstop for over 3 years now.

To save the diodes it is possible to connect the positive usb to the 3rd pin of the switch, this way the switch selects usb or battery

I'm sad that real neon signs are so less common now. It's a craft I've always wanted to get into.

Tying a knot in a cord for strain relief is perfectly acceptable, /provided it's the correct knot/! A simple overhand knot has a tendency to 'walk' along minimum-friction cord such as plastic-coated/sheathed wires, hence it's frowned upon for strain-relief. Add a twist to the loop of an overhand knot & you have a 'figure-eight' knot, which won't walk & is thus perfectly OK (or it unravels & you have a straight cord, in which case twist the knot's loop in the other direction)

Maybe eliminate the resistor and let the diodes do that job to maintain brightness.

You can actually get little usb breakout boards for type C etc. So you wouldn't of had to hard wire it in. I made a battery bank out of a few li-ion cells I salvaged from a laptop battery. I used a usb c one and bridged the data pins so it'd take 1A and wired it to a tp4056 module. Then I wired it to the same boost/charge board you have in that diy power bank thing. I got a couple of those but the 18650 cells I had where garbage. Like not even 250mAh. tp4056 is a little bit more gentle than it so I just used that boards boost functionality and not charge.

I have a lamp/flashlight from Daiso that is designed to run off of... 3? 4? AA batteries. I snipped off the battery holder (I'll use that elsewhere) and soldered in a USB-PD decoy board set to 5 volts so I have a bit more current from compliant PD sources. And it worked!... The LED was a little on the anemic side, however. So I'm somewhat debating upping the PD voltage and replacing the sad little chip with a COB module or strip array, hopefully resulting in a decent desk lamp without melting the enclosure.

You could also cut a 2 pieces of steel bar roughly the same diameter and length as an AA battery and put them in the battery compartment to add weight when you don't have the 3x AA cells in the unit.
