RUNWAY INCURSION at busy Las Vegas airport!

A charter Falcon aircraft strays onto runway 19R, causing air traffic control to urgently call for a go-around by an incoming Cessna.
The incident was considered a "possible pilot deviation," leading to the Falcon pilot being given the dreaded phone number to call. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will almost certainly be involved in deciding what happens to the pilot for this egregious and dangerous mistake.

Being asked to call the control tower is usually not the big deal it is made out to be. The conversation consists of a brief discussion of what happened, and collecting contact information about the aircraft and pilot. That information is then forwarded to the closest Flight Standards District Office (FSDO), which carries out the follow-up investigation. While it certainly is possible to lose one's pilot certificate, this only happens in cases involving deliberate misconduct, repeated offenses, or egregious disregard for safety. The FAA's enforcement policy is not a punitive one, it is focused on education.

Taxiway foxtrot is tricky if your not paying attention or familiar. Because of the displaced threshold of 19R it all looks like open taxiway. Regardless you always need to be looking for hold short lines and other cues. One day I was told to lineup and wait 19R from that hold short and almost taxied straight across to 19L because the threshold of 19R is down aways to the right, and out of sight. At least there was two of us, and my coworker caught my potential opps, since he was based there for years, and familiar. No harm no foul that day. Certain airports you really need to be on your A game. Probably would be a good idea for them to make it a Hot Spot🤷🏻‍♂️

For such a highly technological development of travel and recreational craft, it boggles me at how horrible the radio sounds. For the most part the voices are low and quality of sound is scratchy. In the pilot’s defense, it looks like the far runway has both in ground and elevated runway guard lights or Stop Bar lights while the hold short he crossed only has elevated runway guard lights illuminated. This may have given the pilot the false sense that he was not required to stop there. Add the fact that airfields outside the US have some differences in airport lighting and signage.

@stevendoiron8951 speaking from experience ( retired controller) I can say probably nothing. If he is headed over seas he likely won’t ever call back and the matter will be dropped. Even if he is staying inside the country AND actually calls, if it was 4 or more hours since the event the controller might have gone home. In the mean time, before he calls if he fills out a NASA ASRS form the worse that would happen would be a follow up letter Ellington him to be careful. Since the form can now be submitted on line he could do it in the air and pretty much cut off any further action.

Probably not a US citizen or pilot so what would the FAA do anyway?
@wolf2179
@wolf2179 9 месяцев назад
@@thud9797 Just because the pilot is not a US citizen does not mean the FAA can not restrict or bar a pilot from flying into the US as well as issue a fine. If the pilot is fined they may not be allowed to fly in US airspace until the fine is paid. Also, air carriers from foreign countries can't simply fly into the US without getting appropriate certifications and approvals. What this means is that not only can the pilot get in trouble with the FAA but so can the carrier. What happens with the pilot and carrier depends on the history. If the pilot doesn't have a history of violations they may just get a warning. Carrier will get notified about the pilot as well. If the carrier has a history of having pilots committing violations, the carrier may get a fine and or barred from flying in US. If they are fined they can't operate in the US until the fine is paid as well. So just because the pilot is not a US citizen does not mean the FAA can't do anything.

There should be smaller, less busy airports in the area to avoid this kind of issue. Larger, busier airports should be restricted to larger aircraft. Smaller airports should be for smaller snd personal aircraft. Too many times I’ve seen collisions, deaths, over stressed ATC’s from this solvable problem. Or the larger airports install a smaller landing strip for smaller aircraft. It’s so elementary.

Being asked by the tower to copy a phone number is NOT bad news.... It simply means they would like to have a conversation about an event you were involved in. It is not getting yelled at or scolded or in trouble etc., etc.. It is simply a conversation. Where it goes from there is all depending on you, your actions, your demeanor, your knowledge, your awareness, what the event involved on your part. At most, yes the FAA may get involved and assign training on the matter, or if you're deemed by your own choices and actions to be unfit to fly, they will ground you, or at very worst case, suspend or take away your Pilots certificate. Again, a phone number is just an inquiry to get your side of the story. The reason they have you call is so they don't tie up radio coms and so voices can be heard more clearly. To state in the video that this is a bad or horrible thing is incorrect and fear mongering. It is misinformation based on fear. There is nothing to fear. Unless you're a complete jerk.

First, it must be clarified that making a mistake that leads to ATC giving you a phone number does not necessarily mean that you are going to lose your license, as long as you have not caused an accident, of course, you must call Immediately or as soon as you arrive at your destination, an FAA inspector will ask you to report what happened and will review your file online to verify that you have not committed another incident like the one you committed, if the mistake you made did not put the operation, it can only give you a warning, in conclusion it is advisable to always be alert to the aerial operation and situational awareness to save ourselves a bad time.

For people like me who aren't pilots but like to watch from the sidelines ... I assume those flashing red lights are the 'hold short' line. Why are there 2 rows before getting to 19L(?) or is that some sort of strange reflection? I just see one row on 19R. Do they stop flashing red (do they turn green?) when you are cleared to cross /enter the runway? If so, what mechanism turns them off, does the ATC have to deactivate them for each flight or is there some sort of automated system? I'm like a two-year-old with questions. I just find safety protocols (and how it's impossible to 'human-proof' them fascinating).
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 9 месяцев назад
It’s a weird reflection on that second row. I’m based out of Vegas and there is no second row of lights at 19L. I believe those lights are controlled by controllers and those lights will turn off, when cleared. There is another set of those lights on the first part of the runway. Those are automated. Every time an airplane is detected on the crossing runway, they flash red and as soon as the airplane on that runway clears, they turn off.

@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 9 месяцев назад
Hard to say. It’s entirely possible that their phone call cleared up some things that satisfied the controller not to take it further. It’s also possible that the controller wants to take it further and since these pilots are European, the FAA would transfer the case over to Europe. Getting a phone number isn’t always bad, as was written in the video. Getting a number gives the pilots a chance to explain their side. Probably worse case is when this happens and you don’t have to call. That means it’s going to be reported no matter what and they don’t need to hear your side of the story. Only time I’ve been given a number, the tower manager wanted to apologize to me for the way the controller mishandled my flight, that was a medivac flight and wasn’t given the priority that I was supposed to have gotten. So it’s not always a bad thing.

KLAS OPERATIONS, who are required by FAR to monitor Tower 24/7, should have ordered the fouled runway CLOSED for pilot safety. Big miss.

@RedArrow73 As a retired controller I disagree. The tower had the situation in hand. This would be no different than if it was simply a matter of an aircraft being slow in crossing a runway. The only difference being that aircraft didn’t have clearance as far as this video shows.

You're right regarding FAA has no authority over them however the FAA can ban them from flying in US airspace !! and also the FAA would notify EASA over this incident I'm quite sure, you can't get away with it in aviation !!

Crossing the 'Hold-Short' line at any airport without permission is NOT a mistake; it's INCOMPETENCE! (I can give a pass to a student pilot; or even a Private Pilot, but these two, or three, pilots in a modern advanced jet like Dassault 7X...there are NO excuses!) Sadly, what will happen is these guys/gals will fly back...FAA will talk to their CAA, or whatever their local governing body is...and nothing will happen to these foreign pilots.

That's crazy! There was a huge accident at LAX because of a plane out on the runway when another was landing....that is the reason those red and green lines are built into other runways now...That accident caused the change.... She is speaking too fast, with unnecessary urgency, perhaps some one is cracking a whipping on them in the control tower. ? Pilots, Which would YOU prefer in the tower, a slow speaking, clear confidant tower or a speedy pushing controller for ground control operations? Asking for a friend who flies in Alaska, spends his flights looking for places to put it down if need, and prefers remote Unmanned airports for landings. That all said, it is hard work for all the Air crews and the controllers working hard to keep a safe and orderly operations of the airport.

Nowhere in this recording do I hear them being instructed to hold short. How am I supposed to believe it was the flight crews fault if your not going to include the audio of the alleged instructions.
@HappyLandingsVegas
@HappyLandingsVegas 9 месяцев назад
You also don't hear the pilot being instructed to cross the runway (until much later). ATC instructs them either to hold short or to cross. Unless there's an emergency, they will never instruct a pilot to park on an active runway like this guy did. It's obvious the pilot was not paying attention. The audio comes from a scanner that is monitoring the two tower frequencies at LAS. It does not monitor ground control, and if the two tower frequencies are active at the same time, only one of them will be heard. Therefore, some ATC traffic is missed in the audio. But it's hard to see how the pilot could not be at fault here.

Ummm... I may be wrong, but at 1:49, the plane circled has crossed the hold bars... but it looks like he is at the END of the runway, as in getting ready for takeoff... as there is no runway to the left of him... however the plane in front of him IS sitting smack bang in the middle of either a runway, or a taxiway. Are we talking about the correct plane here? Just wondering.
