THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
04-JUN-2021. A Frontier Airlines Airbus A320 (A320), registration N213FR, performing flight FFT538 / F9538 from Denver International Airport, CO (USA) to Reagan National Airport, DC (USA), after landing went right off the runway and stopped. The airplane was unable to continue taxi and was towed back to the apron.
TEXT VERSION OF COMMUNICATIONS (Read if subtitles in video were fast):
FFT538: Tower, Frontier Flight 538, inbound 1.
TOWER: Frontier Flight 538, Washington Tower, RW 1 cleared to land
FFT538: RW 1 cleared to land, Frontier Flight 538.
TOWER: Frontier Flight 538, you got the end?
TOWER: Turn left at the end, Frontier.
TOWER: Frontier Flight…
TOWER: Frontier Flight…
TOWER: JetBlue 2080, go around, climb and maintain 3000, turn left heading 270.
JBU2080: Go around and heading 270, JetBlue 2080.
FFT538: Tower, Frontier 538.
TOWER: Frontier Flight 538, roger, sir. I see. We're gonna get ops out there right now. Do you guys require any assistance?
FFT538: I think we’re just okay, we probably just need to be towed back.
JBU2080: Say the altitude, for JetBlue 2080?
JBU2080: Altitude, for JetBlue 2080?
TOWER: JBU2080, go around, turn left heading 270, climb and maintain 3000.
JBU2080: 3000, JetBlue 2080.
TOWER: And Frontier Flight 538, can you guys maneuver there?
FFT538: Probably not without hitting lights, probably, Frontier Flight 538.
TOWER: Alright, Frontier Flight 538, we're gonna get ops out there
AAL2752: And Frontier, from American 2752, we're at the hold short of 19. I concur with you, your nose wheel looks like it's just on the runway, so certainly would maneuver.
TOWER: Frontier Flight 538, don’t move, sir. We’re gonna have OPS go out there.
OPS: Tower, OPS, we’d like RW 1 at F.
TOWER: OPS 1, roger, RW 1 is yours.
OPS: Roger that.
TOWER: And everybody on my frequency, we’re gonna stop all operations for a couple of minutes till we get the Frontier aircraft figured out. Everybody on 119.1, just hold your positions, we’re gonna get Frontier taken care of and then we're gonna get everybody, so appreciate everybody’s patience.
COMMENTS: Frontier Flight 538 was towed to the apron. That’s all. Don’t forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE. Thanks.
THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreetmap.org/copyright/en.) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

Minor correction to the subtitles: the American pilot said "so I certainly wouldn't maneuver." He's confirming the assessment of the Frontier pilots that they should not attempt to move the aircraft under its own power.

Thank you. It sounded like "would". And the controller said "Don't move" so that's why i put there "would".

Interestingly, 1/19 is the main runway used at DCA but its also the only runway that doesn't have EMAS
@VictoryAviation

Sounds like they kept it on the runway… barely. I wonder why EMAS wasn’t installed after the FAA’s assessment.

America says the nose wheel looks like it’s just on the runway so does this even constitute as an overrun? Sure they’re way farther out then they should be, but it’s not like they sent her out into the grass or anything?

How did they manage to overrun? Was it wet? Did they have an extremely late touch down? Tailwind? Did the brakes fail? Thrust reversers?

We had no bad weather here in DCA. It was completely dry during that time with my shift there. *It had made our TPA pilots to time out our WWE wrestlers that same night* . No, I didn't hear any jetway crashes from that Frontier.

There are other runways. Wasn't it possible for nr.2 and 3 landing aircrafts to use that, after going around? Maybe due to rwy length?

Runway length is definitely the limiting factor at Reagan on the other runways.

Don't know what time this occurred, but there were heavy thunderstorms in the DC area yesterday afternoon. Possibly a wet runway was a contributing factor.

So, how long was the airport shutdown? This is why one should always tank enough fuel to head off to someplace else - even in beautiful weather.

@@msjdb723 As I posted above the only person responsible for what happens with an aircraft is the PIC or pilot in command per the FARs. I know this from personal experience. He may lose the left seat for a while but he should be fine. There probably will sim training before he gets back in the cockpit.

@@Tigers9596 I flew Southwest a week ago, never again. I flew on a 737-700, pilots were great, even the cabin crew, but the plane was old and tired. I was sitting on the left side of the plane with a clear view of the wing. I saw chunk of the flap missing, it concerned me. I took a picture and showed it to the pilot after we landed, he then pulled out the maintenance log and shown me it had been written up months prior. I'm sorry but an airline that willfully flies an aircraft with damage on a critical component is off my list. if you'd like to see the picture, I have it and can email to anyone interested. As for this frontier flight, I'm just not confident a narrow body jet over running the runway in good weather conditions. In my experience planes of this size don't take up a lot of runway to stop, usually less than half the length at major airports. I fly a lot for business. I prefer Delta due to their standard IFE with plane tracker(which I love as an avgeek, I like tracking the planes ascent and descent), great flight crews, and them being on time.
