For those who don't care for Paula's attitude or perceived bad mood, that was just her style, she was always very "I'm too cool to care" and that's why she became successful on the seminal show "The Tube" when in a post punk era it just wasn't done to get excited about anything ;-)
I wouldn't say her style was ever "too cool to care". In fact, she was completely the opposite. She's usually "fan-girl'ing", very flirtatious, and throwing in jocular, semi stabbing remarks (usually before or after saying how jealous she is). She was probably depressed (she suffered from bouts of depression), jealous, or both. She also suffered from bulemia, hence her fixation on body image (her own and others'). Overall, she was usually reverent AND irreverent at the same time.
I think she might have been totally thrown my Ru calling her a drag queen. Back then in Britain drag was popular, but it was really quite different and not glam most of the time (on mainstream media at least). Being called a drag queen a Brit would think of Dame Edna or Lily Savage who had a glamour, but it wouldn't be flattering to a woman. And I think she went between fan-girling and "too cool to care" pretty constantly. I was never really a fan of hers on The Big Breakfast.
@@jaybee4118 Well spotted Jay, I agree with you, being referred to as a Drag Queen back then was absolutely not a compliment in anyway at all, even now it still can be used to say you have too much makeup on, however more people might regard it as a compliment now - YT Contouring Tutorial anyone ;-)
I noticed that she didn’t seem her usual self, I didn’t think she was rude to Ru she just seemed very quiet, she may have been having a bad day, and because she was usually so vivacious it was quite noticeable.
Paula Yates totally brings down the atmosphere of this interview, she's so depressing and stony faced. Thank God for RuPaul being so cheery and bringing some life back into the chat!
Paula is obviously throwing shade at Rupuals. But he's such a constant professional. that he diverts with his witt, and laughter. He knows how to play the game to get what he needs. I admire you Rupuals .
I think Ru used to be how you describe her, but now that's he's older & massively successful, I think it's gone a bit to his head or he's just a bit grumpy, that happens when you get older, because he's not quite the fluffy bunny you describe now - no shade intended - I've loved Ru since the early 90's ;-) xx
Paula is having a strange reaction. She looks depressed (opposite of her usual manic bubbly personality). She isn't even trying to laugh at RuPaul's great jokes. Paula seems jealous and competitive. And this is the second interview in which she asks about the "waif-movement". it's a little strange.
I agree, also her usual laid back style just looks really flat & boring in Ru's fabulous presence; Paula had 5 minutes to wake up, but unfortunately that just wasn't enough ;-)
