Hands down best band ever. I so agree. The blueprint for a band. Great friends, great music, they respected each other so much. Went out on top without 10 farewell tours!
So glad your getting into 80's Rush. This is a fantastic track. Alex's solo is epic! Many great tracks to check out from Signals, Grace under Pressure and Power Windows from the 80's 👍👍🎶
I was a junior in high school when this album was released, the New World Tour was my first show, April 1983. For a lot of kids, Subdivisions was the song that resonated with them personally, it got the radio play, it was played in concert until forever. But to me....THIS is the song that resonated with me so personally. The young boy dreaming about his future, about the girl he's got a crush on, so important to him, so absorbing, and then his mother calls him and breaks that moment....so incredibly poignant to me. It was so, so relatable. And just musically fantastic. I like Rush's entire catalog, but if I were to shortlist it to say a dozen songs that I felt were essential, The Analog Kid would be one of them.
Love you two! I've been watching your channel for several years now! FYI. Both Geddy and Alex played the Taurus peddle synthesizer. Most often with Alex playing the bass notes while playing guitar, especially when playing twelve string, and Geddy playing the higher notes while playing keys, bass, or twelve string electric on his double neck! One of the myriad reasons why RUSH were, and always will be the greatest band ever! 👍
Hi Guys, brilliant !!! My favourite track from this amazing album !!!! Wait till you do understand the lyrics ! Sooo good ! I remember making a cassette tape for my walkman, and it was all my favourite tracks from Rush albums, and I would walk to a mates house, miles away, instead of getting a taxi, just to listen to Rush when I was walking. It made the journey feel so short. I remember once going onto Blackpool promenade wearing roller skates, and listening to various tapes I had made. When I lived in Belfast there was a place with a roller skating rink, I would go to when I was about 13 years old, till I was 16. Great music and superb fun. There was always an announcement for the speed line .. if you were brave enough. I came off the rink to watch. Never took part myself. A line forms and moves around the circular rink like the second hand of a clock gradually getting bigger as people joined the line....The brave one at the head .... going faster & faster ....then ...they let go, and centrifugal force sent you flying !!!! Oh the memories of my youth. It was a disco on wheels. Oh .. I even remember the music for the speed line ... "Wipe Out" by The Surfaris ...a 60's instrumental. Great reaction to a brilliant track, thankyou ! Byeee Jim X
I saw Rush in Frankfort Germany during their signals tour featuring the song you reacted to on this channel. Bought the album afterwords helped solidify my love for the band.
DAT RIFF! 😍 A much tighter and relatively leaner production compared to later albums (huzzah Terry Brown), which really brings out the power trio elements these guys were masters of by this point. Plus it's fitting that "analog" is in the title because this was toward the end of the analog phase before everything went digital in the 80's (boo!) and those phat synths create such a thick backing in those more expansive sections.
I gave this album a good amount of listens when it first came out and really liked it, but it's been a long time since I gave it a spin. I forgot how good of a Rush song this really is. I'm "working" my way through their discography chronologically and only a couple more before I get to enjoy this album again!!!
With Rush being my favorite band since 1976, I always look forward to your Rush reactions. And this one was awesome as usual. I think you guys will really love the last song on the last ever Rush album, Clockwork Angels. It’s called The Garden. It brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. I am thinking you guys will probably have the same reaction. Very emotional.
Some time in 1983…19 year old me…NAD 3020 amp, Dual CS505 deck, Wharfedale Laser 80 speakers trying to annoy my parents but my mum was so cool that she loved Rush! Turns out she was watching them on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the mid 70’s when 10 year old me had no idea what real music was. 😆
Definitely a great song from a great album! No surprise that you both loved the song! I don't typically comment but you two are a joy to watch. Eventually, I will suggest songs from the Canadian group Saga as their fan base typically loves Rush. You two are a treasure!
great pick. This album surprised everyone when it came out. at first hear you thought,” ok, they’re going into keyboards more….. ahhh .. i’m not sure i like it”. then you hear again, and again, and again, until you say” why do I keep playing this over, and over “. cause it’s f’in brilliance that’s why. it just takes us mere mortals a bit of time to catch on. at least me anyway.
The Analog Kid and the song Digital Man is like a part 1 and 2. The Analog Kid is like the dreamer drawn by the big city. Some say it's a reference to Neil, leaving the small town and traveling to the UK and eventually joining Rush and touring the world. Digital man, imo is a person who's a workaholic, constantly on the go. There is a reference where the band says the idea for the song was based on a guy doing studio work for them and talking about how busy he was with no time to rest. There are two movies that kinda bring the idea of the songs to the big screen. The Secret of my Success (Micheal J Fox) is the Analog Kid, dreaming of the big city and Click (Adam Sandler) is the Digital Man, constantly on the go and has no time for family and living life. Ironically both Fox and Sandler are Rush fans, which makes me wonder if both songs had an influence on the movies.
I have seen them play this song live a few times. It's such an amazing track! "The Weapon" and "Digital Man" are some of my other favorites on the Signals album.
Hi guys it’s Rush. Expect the unexpected! Haven’t tuned in for a while. I recollect when this album first came out , I had a hard time adjusting to the change in style to the keyboard dominance but now I love most of it. May I suggest “Digital Man”. Probably my favorite tune in this album. Kind of a sequel to Analog Kid. Cheers. Congrats on your continued success.
Nick & Lex, I love when you listen to Rush. I probably say this every time you do Rush. But besides the Beatles, Rush has always been my favorite band. I started from the very beginning. I seen their very first concert with Neil Peart in America. They was the opening act for Uriah Heep with the middle act being Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I never missed them when they came to town, which is 26 times counting the 4 times they opened for other acts. I hope you have some more coming soon. One of my favorites off the Signals album is Losing. But what I would really love for you both to hear & I say this all the time to is. Please do The Garden from their last studio album Clock Work Angels. It's one of my all time favorite songs by them. It's just such a beautiful song & totally different from anything else they've ever done. It's got such a great message to it & It hits me even more since Neil's passing. Great video guys, keep up the good work.
This is a fantastic album. Much more keys than Moving Pictures. I loved it the first time I heard it. Saw them on the first and third nights at Maple Leaf Gardens on this tour. They transitioned to digital keys on the next album (Grace Under Pressure) so they sound a lot "warmer" on Signals.
Love your t-shirt Nick There is so much great music on this Album for you to discover. Digital Man and The Weapon are great choices if you want some other suggestions from Signals, but you really can't go wrong with any track. This album is in my top 5 for Rush. Hope to see another Rush reaction on the Channel soon
Hey guys...love ur Rush reactions... You have a Rush book in the back on the shelf... I have 9 or 10 photos in that book that i had taken over the past 48 years...... enjoy
You need to check out Xanadu live . It was done in 81 I believe but the song was written in 76. Pay close attention to the video. You will see every sound that you hear is them. There were no triggers, backing tracks, any of that stuff. I would say the live version is better than the studio version.
Thank you for doing more rush! Please keep them coming. If you’re going to do another song from signals please do ‘digital man’ in my opinion geddys best bass playing and some of Neil’s best drumming on any of their songs. Do it asap as I can’t wait for your reaction to it! ❤
You two really need to do Chain Lightning off of Presto.... you will both love it. That whole album is great...War Paint, Anagram. Hand over Fist etc etc
Signals was a nice album. Some strong tunes for sure. The guys were just cruising at this point after Waves and Moving Pictures. Neils lyrics are sublime and thought provoking as per usual. Geddy's basslines really standout on this album! Cant wait til you get to Digital Man!
REALLY!!!? That's hilarious, I have NEVER heard him make a _connection_ to the *Flock of Seagull's* as I presumed he was influenced by them (and guitarist Paul Reynolds) along with U2/The Edge (and a bit of The Police), that Alex added a lot of echo/chorus to his tone (especially for Grace Under Pressure). Being too, that they were very much inspired by certain New Wave bands of the time as said in an interview for Moving Pictures.
‘Subdivisions’ is the star of this album, but I think this is the best damn song on the “Signals” album. Lyrically it’s Neil’s most underrated ever, if you ask me. And Alex’s FUCKING SOLO!
80s memories. Having witnessed the arc of decline in music in the '70s where it had peaked, I had given up on popular music and popular everything, and, by he '80s, set the mind to focused learning and intentional input. In a comm class we read "What NOT to Name Your Product" and in "Artificial Intelligence" I had the brilliant idea to start a design company to be called Artificial Intelligence Design Systems...which had the added benefit of being AIDS, thus very easy to remember. At the same time, however, a disease was spreading around the world and country, which would wind up with the same name. Plus AI was too arcane and not nearly as advanced and beyond helpful, like today and tomorrow. I dipped back in in the 90s, but still, the WWW was to dominate the '90s. Heady time. All this to say that I wish Rush had a different name. It's like Adolf to a lot of people who didn't appreciate the firehose of dissimulation from the entirely unmusical Rush. And while I've yet to hear a transcendent timeless tour de force like Close to the Edge, Firth of Fifth or most Crimson, they pay fine homage to a great time where giants ruled...for about five years...and kept the groove alive.
I think you guys really need to check out some songs off of Presto.... it is a great album. Chain lightning War paint The Pass Face up Dreamline off of roll the bones
Missed you guys hitting on Rush. Welcome back. Please please please check out this note for note bass cover: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N1n8JGK1uVw.html This guy can play anything, but I love his Rush covers. Whether on your own or on the channel, check it out You wont be disappointed. And to think Geddy had to play, sing and play his taurus pedals and keyboards over this.
A great coming of age song with incredible lyrics, the line of "When I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find & When I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind" is such a perfect quote for an adolescent moving out on their own for the first time... The Analog Kid about to transition to become a Digital Man. Watching this live is crazy too with Geddy playing a baseline, singing and using his feet for synths. Just nuts.
@obxwave 42 years ago when Signals-album and this song came out I was 19 yrs - "the world was my oyster"... and the longing to depart was so burning. Somehow the time has slipped by, but the song is still even closer to my heart (pun intended). Amazing band. Neil Elwood Peart, gone for three years now. RIP, and Thank You.
Subdivisions, New World Man, Analog Kid. You have to watch this song live in Cleveland. You really appreciate Geddy playing bass, synthesizer and foot pedals all on this song. Great album!!🎶👍
"A boy lies in the grass unmoving, staring at the sky. His mother starts to call him as a hawk goes soaring by. The boy pulls down his baseball cap and covers up his eyes." Incredible lyrics!
"You move me You move me With your buildings and your eyes Autumn woods and winter skies You move me You move me Open sea and city lights Busy streets and dizzy heights You call me You call me"
This and Losing It are my favorites off this album. BLISTERING solo from Alex. You guys need to start doing it like Just JP and read the lyrics after listening to the song.
Thanks so much NicknLex for getting back to 80's Rush. You both are going to love and appreciate so much of this creative era from the best band ever. Maybe you could do like 2 songs a month. Thanks again for being part of the Rush Family !!! 🎸🥰
More about the lyrics from a classic interview with Neil: Interviewer: I was re-reading the lyric sheet from Signals today. Much of what you wrote about made me think of you as the Mark Twain of rock lyrics - writing about Huckleberry Finn - or Tom Sawyer-type characters. Neil Peart: Well, that's certainly something that I relate to strongly. I basically come from a standard background like that. I grew up in the suburbs, but at the same time, most of my relatives had farms. So every summer or holiday I'd be out at the farm. I always had a very simple outlook on life as a response to that. When I first got into the big time, I did, and still do, find it very hard to relate to. I love playing drums and I love traveling. But I find a great deal of difficulty dealing with everything that surrounds that.
Can you believe so many Rush fans back in the day thought that this record was the start of Rush's decline? LMAO! This record blows away ANYTHING they did in the 70's although I love that era as well. Rush's best 5 records came all in a row. Permanent Waves through Power Windows.
