PERMANENT WAVES, Rush’s seventh studio album, was originally released in January 1980, and its forward-thinking music signaled a new direction for the Canadian band as it entered a new decade. The six songs encompassing the album encapsulated the breadth of Rush’s formidable progressive chops meshed with its knack for creating radio-friendly arrangements, all elements that were embedded within the grooves of their previous album, 1978’s widely acclaimed Hemispheres. PERMANENT WAVES also signified Rush’s first of many recording sessions at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, which was at one point nicknamed the trio’s own personal Abbey Road recording studio.

I bought this album when I was a kid and just stared at it. "What does that mean" and "why is there some lady walking in a war zone?". I asked this while listening to the entire album. These questions made me even more inquisitive about the band and their music. Still to this day I look at the cover and remember buying it at Sound Warehouse (Houston, TX) thinking about that day just standing in the aisle wondering "whatever this is... I need to buy it!" Best choice I ever made. Rush has, and still is, my favorite band of all time.

Man. I couldn't imagine Rush without Hugh Syme. I can remember listening to The Necromancer through the headphones while lying on my bed, staring at all the faces and bodies hidden in the tree and river on the back of the Caress of Steel album cover... Now I'm not saying that I might have been a little bit high while doing this, I'm just saying that, uhh... But anyway, every time I got a new album, my friends and I would look at every little detail just to see if there was anything strange going on. And there usually was. It was expected. Hugh Syme is a badass. But his art painted him in a different light. He's a regular looking dude. I expected to see someone that looked like Yousuf Karsh or Leonado da Vinci or something.

That's pretty typical storm surge at the Galveston seawall and I recognized that back when the album came out. I can see how you might think it was a bomb. That's the entrance to Murdoch's Pier in the background with the waves crashing up from underneath it. Murdoch's survived Carla in 1960, when this picture was taken. It was destroyed by Ike in 2008.

Probably depends on where you grew up to the familiarity of the background shot. I saw A few pictures of Galveston, and new that the hurricane at the turn of the century reaked horrible destruction, and took many, many lives, and I recognized some of the cities municipal public works items, also the gasfire, I think I'd never seen A picture like that with the ploom of fire billowing out, in An apocalyptic fashion, I guess, I thought they looked peculiar, left A mark on my, young, impressionable mind...... ..... And the Hot Rita Hayworth lookalike probably helped leave quite the impression, on my puberty staged mind.

Back in those analog days when they used to record using the reel to reel tape machines that used 2 inch tape that's also how they edited the music arrangements buy cutting & splicing the tape in the areas they wanted to change if they didn't want or couldn't afford to do a re recording of that part of the song again . It was much harder to be a mixing engineer back on those days because of this being pro tools had not existed yet so you have to give those early recording engineers credit for what & how they did it & how well a lot of it turned out using those methods !

All Rush cover arts are special in their own way, but PW has got something I can't really pin down that makes it so aesthetic. I can only imagine the amount of work it must have taken to create the whole thing back in those days!

Awesome video, really love this channel I have been a RUSH fan since day one. I still remember hearing their first release on the radio. The album covers were always awesome, most bands with 4 or 5 people aren't near as tight as RUSH and them with 3. , glad I was around for the experience and pleasure of hearing and watching them the last 45 years

Isn’t it easier to be a “tight” band with three members than with four of five?

When I was 10 years old or so, my cousin was a music critic for a major publication and had a MASSIVE record collection. During a visit to his home, he told me that I could go down to his basement where this vast collection was and I could pick any one album I wanted to keep. I figured I'd be down there for days, but about 12 minutes in, I ran into Permanent Waves. I stared at this cover, no idea who Rush was. I only knew of the existence of Kiss and Led Zep at this point. I struggled. I mean, Rush? Who is Rush? I couldn't possibly spend my one shot on a complete unknown, right? But this cover. It had me. I cannot properly describe how or why it had me, but it was as if this imagery had been put together specifically to catch my young attention and create a life-long ultra-fan of this incredible band. I have always and will always credit the Permanent Waves album cover for how I met Rush. And I have always and will always credit the music on that album for turning me on to a whole new and wonderful world. Thank you so much, Hugh. You changed my life is such a good way!

The main reason that I bought my first Rush album, 2112, was because I liked the cover. The art caught my eye. Then I read the paragraph on the back that introduced the hero of 2112, and I had to have it to hear the story. I still remember the first time I listened to it. 1976 to now, 45 years, and I thank Hugh Syme for introducing me to Rush.

I used to play Jacob's Ladder on the piano as a finale in my concerts. Not easy to do. I miss the band! RIP, Dr Peart.

That was very groovy indeed, thanx for sharing that. There was a time when i nearly bought a matching Gibson SG doubleneck that some well off nearby guitar player had in his collection after hearing him mentioning that he was going to sell it. So then i worked double shifts and showed up at his door with the money he was asking for it, then he said he changed his mind! Ahhhhh!!!... Then i remember later on when i lived a few miles from Dr Alex Lifeson on a farm north of where i previously lived, and that made where i was located feel more special just knowing that as i jammed along with their recordings, pretending to be the 4th band member. Then there was the time i walked into the studio not too far away from there where they recorded at, and was like, wow, i was standing in a room that they previously did too, while noticing all that fancy studio gear. I nearly bought a giant flight case i saw they previously used for their touring around with, i should've really. A friend back in scarborough used to have house parties, and he told me that Alex and Geddy showed up out of the blue, and they basically sat around on the staircase inside and seemed really involved in some discussion they were having creatively, and my friends were like, don't disturb them, just let em be as are, as my friends were no doubt in awe of their party inspiring presence. I think they mentioned that there was some weed involved, lol. That studio should be preserved being declared as a historical site really, maybe even with robotic versions of themselves just rocking out large riffs, for helping creating permanent waves in the arts and sciences. #LongLiveRockingAndRolling
