On the LP, when the song ended the "spiral" cut on the vinyl closed into a circle so the wind chimes Neil played would go perpetually. Yup. Another way he's immortal!
Not sure about that... he's repeating what Rolling Stone has been schlepping out for years. Rolling Stone got it wrong but held back Rush from the RRHoF until they were well past due. For someone to jump on that bandwagon of undeserved labelling... well, I'm not sorry for saying it.
Yeah, I love that Alex and Geddy sometimes jokingly referred to Neil as "the new guy", almost 50 year later after he joined, just after their first album.
I was considered a prodigy drummer as a child and made a career out of it. Neil was my main influence and I know his orchestrations forward and back, being more than able to play Rush's entire catalogue. However, nobody can EVER replicate Neil's feel, touch or ambiance. He's simply not replaceable.
That countdown including Neil's fills before the 7:00 minute mark down to 7,6,5,4,3,2,1...Nobody does it cleaner than them !! That's what practice does for you. Just amazingly clean, which is their trademark...
Hey Jamal, what I love the most about you is how you can appreciate ALL types of music and praise the talents of the artists involved. It's rare and makes it a joy to hear your reactions. Keep it up, brother.
@@craigjillson6050 Agreed. That middle solo takes a loong time and sucks you in. Amazing version of that song. I wish there was a video to that concert.
The Bass on here is incredible too, I'm not sure where I heard it but I heard the isolated baseline and it is crisp note for note Alex is the same it's why they compliment each other so well.
Rush's lighting manager Howard Ungerleider came up with the title at a party. There were two dogs at the party, one a German shepherd and the other a tiny white nervous dog. Howard used to call the shepherd By-Tor because anyone that walked into the house was bitten. The other dog was a snow-dog (white). So from that night on Howard called the pair of dogs "By-Tor and the Snow Dog." The dogs belonged to Rush's manager, Ray Danniels
@@IMNOTGEDDY The lyrics that Neil wrote for By-Tor & The Snow Dog were very tongue-in-cheek. There was a kind of comic lexicon that we had on the road - a bunch of stuff that we would joke about. And that’s where By-Tor & The Snow Dog came from. It was a joke that got out of control. Our manager Ray had two dogs, and Howard Ungerleider, our lighting guy, called them Biter and Snow Dog. So Neil took these two names and created fictional characters and we turned it into a song.www.loudersound.com/features/rush-s-early-years-exclusive-interview-with-geddy-lee-alex-lifeson
Story is correct. Band manager has two dogs, one a big fluffy white dog and one aggressive bitter. Neil took the story and wrote the fantasy lyrics to have some fun with it. Once Neil joined they expanded their sound and creativity to create a one of a kind sound that no one else ever could imitate.
When the album this song is on, "Fly By Night" was released, these 3 young men were TWENTY TWO!! Also around this time, I was first introduced to the music of Rush. Neil Peart had joined Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson only a few short months earlier, barely 2 weeks before their first tour of the states. Hella creative indeed!!! Geez, this is only about 45 years old!! That means this hippie chick 🐥 here is...... Never you mind! 😊😊😊
Before Neil died, I had been pushing people to react to "Losing It" which sums up why he retired in 2015, though it is from 1982. (The the added beauty of rare guest musician Ben Mink's electric violin.) Now that he has passed "Afterimage" has taken on a stronger meaning.
@@justineapril7922 yes, of course, these profound songs of loss and impermanence speak stronger than ever to those left in a period like this of sorrow and grief.
All of those old Rush albums will take you on a journey. Those albums used to carry me far away from all my troubles when I was a teenage kid. The visions those songs build in your mind are really something else.
First Rush album I ever bought. This song literally changed my life. After so much pop music (1985) I kept asking myself, "wait, you can actually do that in music?!?
Thank you, Jamel, for reacting to my favorite Rush song of all time!!!!!! I agree with Paul G. below -- the live version from "All the World's a Stage" is amazing.
Jim Ave hey there Jim. After reading what you wrote my mind immediately segued into Spindrift. I still can’t figure out if Neil was writing about middle east/west relations or the trauma of relationship drama?
This album was the soundtrack for my 45 minute walk to hockey practice when I was a kid. Just me, my Walkman, and my goalie equipment. Brings back memories
True story, and Necromancer is the follow up to this song, where By-Tor returns, but this time as a hero, redeeming himself and saving the people trapped by the evil Necromancer. Fantastic story! Love these 2 songs. Great reaction video! Awesome!
LOVE this song! One of my favorites! Live in London I think it was 1976, could be wrong. But that live version was unreal. It was my alarm for like 2 years. Every morning I woke to “Alright London from Toronto Canada, RUSH” omg memories! Love RUSH! RIP Neil! Great reaction
This is the very first Rush song i ever heard. I was around 8 years old then having a sleep over at my friends house. He said listen to this song , and it blew my mind. So i went out the next week and bought my own copy of the Fly by night album. I have been a Rush fan since that day , thank you Tim!
I humbly request that you sir react to another fine Canadian power trio...”Triumph”. A good starting point would be “Follow your heart”. Fantastic guitar and duel lead vocalists set this fine band apart. Very under rated. Enjoy and you have the best genuine reactions around!
Dude, I love your appreciation for my favourite band of all time. I've been listening to them since 1974 & Fly by Night was the first album I ever bought. I used to listen to them lying in bed with headphones on until I knew every word & note of every song. It's great to see your reaction to their older stuff, this came out in 1975! Not many (if any) bands were doing stuff like this then & none sounded like Rush.
The best Trio band ever. Thank you Neil. RUSH is the adventure park of music, they take you on adventures like no other band. Neil was an Epic story teller. They are the official musicians listening band. A delight to the trained ear.
He's already done Subdivisions. It was a good watch - especially his analysis of the lyrics. Also done Limelight, The Trees & Red Barchetta. Your top 5 on the list are definitely must listens!!
I like your taste. I wanna see some reactions from Signals-HYF era. He's gotta do Power Windows in its entirety. The Analog Kid, Chemistry, Countdown, The Weapon, The Enemy Within, Afterimage, screw it, just do em all. Lol
Creatively so brilliant & paired with an unmatched ability to move through different time signatures equals ... GENIUS. They’re so damn tight it’s moves me. I’m a 40 yr fan, and I’m still so impressed every time I listen to them. I so dig your reactions; brother... you get it. Peace.
New subscriber! :) Love that you're reviewing the incomparable music of Rush. Hometown proud! :) You have so many videos! :) May I suggest that you listen to "Cygnus X-1" from the album "A Farewell To Kings"? It's one of my many, many favourites from Rush.
Now you are diving deep into the Rush catalog. Neil Peart took Rush's music to a new level. His lyrics and percussion work was off the chart. RIP"professor"
it is true about rush manager and the name of the dogs.If you remember ByTor saved the 3 travelers in the song Necromancer that you reacted too.Much respect to you my brother
Total classic from start to finish what a beautiful drum into and solo that was mid way through.Interesting they had By Tor as good in the Necromancer but bad here
Afterimage Red Sector A Distant Early Warning Nobody's Hero Alien Shore Earthshine Resist (live from R30) Enjoy the journey! Even after all your Rush videos you are still just getting started! 40 years of music
I try to start every day with one of your Rush videos since I'm such a huge fan. But I think it's your positivity that really gets my day going. If I'm ever near whevever you are, I owe you a drink. You said 'journey' often and that's what I explain to people why this is such an influential band, the music is like a locomotive, once it starts it just keeps rising until the end, the music has structure. It's not there for the sake of being there. They are also a rare breed when it comes to writing because all the music is written around the lyrics, not the opposite. I think you should wrap up the 70's prog with Cygnus X-1 followed by Cygnus X-1 Book 2. It's a mind trip of a space journey into a black hole and then book 2 picks up on the other side. It's too wild to explain. Keep up them positive vibes! cheers to you!
The first 3 albums by Rush are the best. They played 3 Halloweens in a row at thr Ritz music hall corpus Christi TX. Working man, fly by night, and caress of steel. After that thier careers took off but they never made better albums than the 1st 3. Seriously talented individuals
I will suggest a song from the immense incredible Rush catalog that is truly unique (like so many others) "Time Stand Still"...I have been a diehard Rush fan since I heard 2112 on vinyl when I was about 8 years old...about 43 years ago. Geddy, Alex and Neil are the most talented, most creative and most classy guys to ever record an album. The more you listen to Rush, the more you love them. They never get old and they were always experimenting which made them better and better. I find it hard to say there was a better band out there , ever.
Try listening to the song live. It's on their All The World's A Stage live album. The instrumental in the middle of the song is killer. Alex's guitar work and solos are out of this world. Of course, Ged's bass, and Neil's drums(R.I.P. Professor), are top notch as well. Anybody who's seen them live can attest to that. My favorite band of All Time!
As always, love your observations. It’s so much fun to see your reaction to what fans have been aware of for decades. I just wish you could’ve been watching the concert video version. Cheers brother!
this song can never *not* give me shivers. their music is so very, very visual in nature. it's so easy to *see* the content, via the music. Thank you, Jamel! you just made my week.
Thank you for this one. This is one of my all time fave from RUSH. It is one of the first songs that I learned to play in a garage band in my youth. Loved the reaction.
