Hey, thanks for the tabs. Do you think you could send the sheet music by finale format ? I'd like to play this peace in the basson and it's better to transpose a half ton . Bravo for your work!
Geddy is supernatural playing this bassline and singing at the same time. He’s truly a master of multitasking. Singing, playing bass, playing keyboard and using pedals. Just WOW
@@luisorozco3130 He didn't say he is the only one who does it. But Geddy was doing it in the 70s when Esperanza wasn't even born yet. So give some respect to Geddy because he is one of the pioneers of this concept.
@@STORMCombatSystem fosure not dismissing Geddy at all. I just figured Knut might like to check out other artists that play bass and sing at the same time! I wouldn't want to compare the two artists, they are amazing in different ways.
Great tab and performance. The song isn't terribly technical, but remembering all the small variations from verse to verse to chorus to chorus is such a challenge. Geddy plays every section in a slightly different way, and learning the nuances becomes a huge brain strain. Thanks for all your work.
Okay. I picked too lofty a goal. I hadn’t played since the mid 90s and this is way beyond me. I need to loop back to some Counting Crows and other songs I used to play before trying to play something like this. All I got to show for today was frustration. You make it look a lot easier than it is. You’re a great player BTW.
@@samcarroll6210 the instrumental break. It would be a solo if the rest of them weren't soloing as well haha. Rush are masters of it, especially during this era. My fav moment of theirs like this is during the Camera Eye.
With the advent of You Tube, everyone has brought the world into their homes, as far as seeing how other Bass players play, and where you are in the pecking order, in my home town I was a big fish in a little pond, but out here where the waters are deeper, I’m just a minnow...I played this song 30 years ago, and had to take each lick off of an LP, one vinyl line after another, lifting the stylus then putting it back on a record, physically, and here you play it effortlessly...it took me hours... great job, love the transcription to follow along, I didn’t realize the main lick was in 7/4...and how many tempo changes, great job...and thank you!
Cool story, thanks for sharing. Luckily for me the bass track for this song is on RU-vid so I was able to transcribe it note for note. Once transcribed, guitar pro allows me to practice at slower speeds to really lock it in. Even with these advantages, it still took me about 40 hours to make this video. Also, keep in mind, you are seeing my best take and it can't be overstated how much better I sound with rush in the background.
I'm not as far along in my travels but I understand what your getting at. I started playing guitar and drums at 11, never got far but I'm still learning at 30! I can't read notes to save my life so my buddy taught me how to play Sabbath tunes day listening to the CD and playing bit by bit. We really got going when we discovered the dvd player could play CDs and had a repeat. In 6th grade I got a Guitar World subscription and the tabs and the players riff articles were first on my list, I'd read the tab and listen to the CD then give it hell! To this day I listen to the song, read the tab and start working on it. Dudes on RU-vid help when I get stumped but the cd its self always seems to be my go to.
Nice job. Man do I wish I had RU-vid 30 years ago when my band decided to play this song. I had to learn this on bass by listening to the record over and over, bit by bit. I got it eventually, but you nailed it!
Thanks, Yes RU-vid is great for bass lessons. Its also good for bass tracks. You can find just the bass track for this song on RU-vid. This is what I used to transcribe it.
I got kicked out of my band cause I couldn't learn this bass part, specifically the bass solo part. Just couldn't put in the time and each time we rehearsed i would fuck it up. They got a better bass player after that :-)
The alternate 7/8 and 3/4 tempos make this music impossible to understand. Only way to play this is to memorize the whole song. Very tricky if you are not a rush fan.
Thanks so much for the tab! I've been trying to teach myself to sing and play bass at the same time and I'd heard this is a good starter song to learn. Much appreciated
Good luck. I wouldn't call this a starter song but it definitely more approachable than other rush songs. If you can sing and play this at the same time, you are truly talented. Have fun.
Great tone man. One-time guitarist here, setting off to pick up the bass - that finger dexterity is not what it once was after years and years in construction. I think this is gonna be my first Rush tune. I really appreciate the post - especially the tab, although watching your left hand is the best cheat there is. The only decision I would make differently is form the notes more intentionally by giving them ending points. I hear a lot of bassists letting the notes ring. Like all of their notes. It ends up making the preformance sound muddy (to my ear). Especially a guy like Geddy, if he's letting a note ring, it's very intentional for a very specific feeling - like in the solo of this song. Otherwise the dude is super succinct, staccato even, precise - like a chemist.
I was trying to watch the tab and dude's fret hand at the same time, thinking the whole video he was playing different notes. Dude has a 5 string and I'm about damned blind 😁 still an awesome vid!
I noticed when they play it live, he waits until the bass run finishes and then comes in late with the singing. Must have recorded in a way that was harder to do playing and singing together.
Hello, I just wanted to point out that at least in the 129th you didn't play all 8ths, but a long e. That's the only inconsistency I have noticed when trying to learn from your video. And I must add your videos are BRILLIANT for learning new songs. Much love and thank you a ton, keep it up!
Lyrics: Living on a lighted stage Approaches the unreal For those who think and feel In touch with some reality beyond the gilded cage Cast in this unlikely role Ill-equipped to act With insufficient tact One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme Living in a fisheye lens Caught in the camera eye I have no heart to lie I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend All the world's indeed a stage We are merely players Performers and portrayers Each another's audience outside the gilded cage Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme The real relation The underlying theme
Generally awesome, but the second note in the 143'd measure is wrong. Should be D# instead of F#---at least if you're trying to replicate the studio track. I must have played this 20 times (along with the studio track), always wondering why that note sounded off. Found a tab which said D# instead. D# sounds exactly right.
Thanks for this. I’m running into probs with the rythm when the verse first starts. I have the notes but not how it fits in. Its hard to hear in the music unless you have it isolated.
The sterling sting ray 5 or SUB-5 as it used to be called. A really solid 5 string bass for only $400 with some BEEFY tones. I’m considering putting an Aguilar in it but am weary about doing anything fucky to the pre amp
I’ve played this a bunch from your video and I’d like to print the music. Where can I this copy? All the other tabs I look at on the web are much different.
This is a great TAB, and I'm really grateful. But I think measure 143 - the first F# (4th fret on the D) should be a D# (6th fret on the A). I'm willing to accept I'm wrong, but the first F#...I'm just not hearing it.
This is great, but can't help but notice the transcription has the final 4/4 of the stanza wrong, as Geddy et al come in on the "and" of 4 not the downbeat of the 7/4 riff. Very minor nitpick but that's an important variation.
@@JoeyRagu Thanks for the feedback. In the next couple of weeks, I will release a video of the bass solo at a slower speed. I can do that for other parts as well, if people find that useful.
Bassist Breakdown ,that’s really awesome,I hope it’s not too much trouble.your tabs are excellent,I just need to keep practicing more. Thankyou very much!! You Rock!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘

So this cover is actually wrong on the verse. There a video of geddy doing pre show exercises and he’s plucks 2 strings at once for those single notes.
Interesting. I used the bass track on RU-vid to transcribe this. I do not recall hearing 2 strings at once for any part. I certainly could have missed it. It is also possible that the bass only track on RU-vid isn't actually from the recording. Finally, perhaps Geddy played it differently during the warmup then he did on the record.
Bassist Breakdown possibly. Here the video I was speaking of. About 14 seconds into the video he goes from a vocal scale to limelight verse. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lsFVRvfLFwY.html
@@aaronmeyers451 I took the bait and watched the video Aaron. Geddy is just messing around. I think he's as likely to use those chords during his live gig as he is to stop and drink coffee in the middle of the song.
Holy shit it's been a year since I first saw this and I'm still trying to learn how to sing and play this one. It's much harder in the chorus than the rest cause the singing doesn't exactly follow the bassline like the rest of the song. give me way more to manage cause I've got two different rhythms to keep track of. I'll get there though
