Geddy, will use foot pedals for the Baseline when he plays the keyboard and when he plays the bass sometimes he uses foot pedals for the synth parts. Alex, the guitarist, also sometimes uses synth foot pedals. You can see this in some of their videos. It's amazing that they can reproduce what they do in the studio when they play live. The wrote their songs that way. You are right this was in the 80s. They were never afraid to incorporate other styles into their music. Neil was the youngest drummer inducted into the modern drummer Hall of Fame.

Neil Peart was Mike Portnoy's hero. He latterly became a friend. If you want to see classic Rush, check out La Villa Strangiatto or Xanadu from the live album Exit Stage Left. Nice reaction man. If you are a musician you will definitely appreciate this band.

It tickles an old Canadian's heart to see another generation discovering the music of my wasted youth. Though sad because of the passing of Neil. Neil Peart, pronounced P-ear-t, joined Rush for the 2nd album, Fly By Night. The original drummer, John Rutsey is featured on their 1st album, self titled, Rush. They had a habit of connecting songs/storylines/characters from one album to another, so it is best to listen in a somewhat chronological order. They are not your typical classic rock bands though. They are considered more Progressive Rock. With the use of synthesizers becoming more prominent as the years went on. If Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd had a love child, it would be Rush. If you'd listen to an old Canadian Rush fan's thoughts, I would suggest you listen to these songs to appreciate Rush From the album, self titled Rush: Working Man, What You're Doing From the album, Fly By Night: By Tor and the Snow Dog, Anthem, Fly By Night From the album, Caress of Steel: The Necromancer (By Tor returns, only as a good guy), The Fountain of Lamneth, Bastille Day From the album, 2112: 2112, Passage to Bangkok From the album, A Farewell to Kings: Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage, Closer To The Heart, Xanadu From the album, Hemispheres: La Villa Strangiato (Instrumental) , Cygnus X-1 Book II Hemispheres From the album, Permanent Waves: The Spirit Of Radio, Freewill From the album, Moving Pictures: Tom Sawyer, YYZ (Instrumental), Limelight, Red Barchetta From the album, Counterparts: Leave That Thing Alone (Instrumental) The early Rush was what made me a fan. I was 14 in 1976 when I listened to 2112 for the 1st time. Nothing like putting headphones on, smoking a fatty and let Rush take you on a musical journey. There will never be another 3 man band where all 3 musicians were gods themselves at their craft in their prime. Peace from New Brunswick, Canada

Jeffery Jones Ahhhhh, Yup! You said it sir. I was born in the summer of 1970 My first ‘real listen’ was Moving Pictures ❤️ but secretly listened and researched as most of my peers moved on to Madonna & Micheal Jackson (also very talented) and some liked Classic Rock, The Stones,Zeppelin were staples. Have to admit, they opened my eyes to Classic Rock. But I always felt ‘in the middle?’ With the friends who liked Classic and the ones who sold their souls to the new shit. I listen to almost everything but it has to be good, and I have to feel it. Rush has always done that

They wrote all of their songs to be played live by just the three of them. When playing keys, bass comes from a MIDI pedal board played by either the bassist or guitarist. When playing bass, he’ll often play keyboard parts on those pedals. So yes, he regularly sings while playing bass AND keys. If both he and the guitarist are too busy to hit something, Neil will trigger it from one of the pads in his kit. They’re all crazy-busy during a performance. Truly incredible musicians!

Subdivisions is the Canadian term for the Suburbs, the song is about the soul crushing dream destroying suburbs and the cliques that they naturally form that disdains any weird person or outcast. This album was in instant jump from the hard rocking Moving Pictures album to the 80's New Wave Synth music that had taken over the globe at the time. Rush were huge fans of new music especially captivated by New Wave.

La Villa Strangiato is a true masterpiece!! Rush was famous for their smooth time transitions. Tom Sawyer is always popular, too - - and an easy place to enter into Rush's epic discography (aka The Rabbit Hole). Vocal, bass, and keyboards = Geddy Lee. Guitar = Alex Lifeson. And of course, Neil Peart (The Professor) = drums. Listening to all music is a great way to extend your own talent ... Rush agreed with that idea - you can hear a lot of other music influences in their songs.

You really have to watch them in concert here. Live in RIO is CRAZY GOOD. YYZ, Tom Sawyer, The Pass, Neil's drum solo. Watch the crowd sing along to YYZ, which is an instrumental. 60,000 fans singing along will give you goosebumps. The band said it was one of their best memories ever. The funny thing is the Band never knew how big they were in Brazil until they went in 2003 (I believe). Sold out 3 shows with 40,000 people being the smallest.
