This song came out when I was in high school and meant a lot. I was fortunate enough to cook dinner for Geddy Lee when he came into the restaurant I worked at. After he finished his meal I went out to his table and asked him if he would autograph a menu for me. He was more than willing and gave me about 20 minutes of his time talking with me and I will say he was the nicest and most humble person I've met. Simply a wonderful guy.

In my view Neil wrote some of the most meaningful lyrics in rock music and the only way to appreciate them is to have them in front of you reading like a book ❤

The song was Neil talking about growing up in the suburbs, and what it was like not conforming to the "norms" of society, being told what to do, and when to do it ..."opinions are provided", and what happens when you don't....."Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone". All the band members related to this. GREAT song with so much deep meaning. Watching the official video version will help.

You are absolutely right when you say they seem like normal guys despite their huge following. That is probably why they were able to stay together & remain friends for more than 45 years ( even longer in Geddy & Alex's case). No ego's just normal family oriented guys who just happened to be the most awesome musicians in rock.

The Barbie dolls have a meaning. Rush is known for being liked by only males. Throughout much of their career the ratio at the concerts were 80-90% men. Because of this, Alex Lifeson (guitarist) had joked about his "female fanatics". The Barbies represented his crazed female admirers.
@BalokLives
@BalokLives 10 месяцев назад
Those Barbies were placed there by the roadies as a joke. They used to do that to Alex to have a bit of fun with it. He liked it so much they left it for the concert.

I am sorry Michael but I have to disagree just a bit. I have been a fan since the days of 2112 and I'm a girl. I have seen Rush 7 times. Every time that they came to New Orleans and I attended the concert there was quite a few women in the crowd. I guess it all depended where the show took place. So, I guess we can agree to disagree. Take care. 😀🎵🎸

@BalokLives
@BalokLives 10 месяцев назад
@@laurakali6522The great thing about going over their catalog (I have been obsessing over many of their songs from back then) is that you find so many songs that you listened to but didn't connect with at the time. For instance, somebody on a reaction channel I watch requested "Losing it" from their Signals album. I absolutely played Signals until it wouldn't play anymore and didn't remember that song. Now I have been rabidly listening to it over and over again. I can't get enough of it. Also, I remembered Grace Under Pressure "Between the Wheels", but I heard it again and I have just become addicted to it all over again. When Clockwork Angels came out, I went to that tour and heard "The Garden" played live before the album had even been released. I told my wife, "That was a great song!" but I didn't listen to it again until after Neil had passed. Now it is like my favorite song of all time. It is forever connected with me to Neil's passing, and when I hear it, I always tear up. Rush had such a deep and wide catalog you never know what will surface again and surprise you. In case anyone is wondering, none of their early albums or songs will jump up and surprise me because they are all tattooed on my brain. I started listening to Rush when their first album was released, and I have been to over ten of their concert tours throughout their career. I lost track of actually how many. My wife has ticket stubs for the years when we were together and that helps, but I don't have the early years anymore. As Rush progressed through the years, I continued listening to them but some of the later albums beginning with Counterparts, I was not as familiar with. But I am more familiar now!

Great reaction Andrei & Dominika!! I will say, however, if there was ever a Rush song that you really NEED to pay attention to the lyrics, it's this one (there are many others, but Subdivisions has such a social commentary that spoke to so many of us, it really deserves scrutiny!). And yes, the musicianship is always on another level! You are correct about the good nature of these 3 gentlemen! Call it their 'humble' Canadian roots, and the way they were brought up (Geddy & Alex born from immigrant parents, living in the suburbs of Toronto, Neil (RIP) from a working class family in St. Catharines), they always remained grounded! Never let fame go to their heads. All three are devoted family men (Neil only had a second marriage and child as his first wife and child died). I'm so very proud to call this holy trinity from Toronto my fellow countrymen! Cheers from Canada eh!

Good Day! Thanks for this. The lyrics are the key part of this song, in my opinion. As you say, it's a decent song, but for young men growing up in the west, especially America, in the '70's and '80's, life in a subdivision could be emotionally traumatic because of the seemingly impervious structures. Almost every house and school were the same or very similar and lives were boiled down to "cookie cutter" routines. Being a "first world" society, the strain was not physical, but mental/emotional. Within the schools or other social areas, fairly strict "subdivisions" or "cliques" of people welcomed or shunned you, depending on your status or skill sets. A 14-year old kid will get angst simply because they are being spoon fed a picture of what their life is supposed to be in order to "fit in."

100% The band have never let their fame go to their head, good observation. I think by watching Rush from a live perspective, you get to see a glimpse of their characters and personalities. I've met Alex on a few occasion and he's such a beautiful soul. Always has time to chat and is humble as heck. Geddy and Alex both were heavily involved with their fans from a meet and greet pov. Neil from my understand tends to be shy when meeting fans. Mostly because he's so humble it's uncomfortable to be showered by people telling how great he is. In the song "Limelight" Neil talks about this very issue. In the lyrics he states "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend" Insightful reaction as usual, keep the Rush coming.

Saw these guys live at least 5 times through the years starting with the 2112 tour which turned me into a life long Rush fan. They are more than musicians, they are craftsman. Three sounding like six! FYI, bass player and lead vocalist Geddy Lee’s real first name is Gary. His parents were holocaust survivors who fled to Canada. When he was a kid and his mother would call out for him in her thick Jewish accent his friends all thought she was shouting “Geddy” and the name just stuck.

Three things, 1. Neil being the greatest drummer EVER, was the most reserved, respectful, normal and down to earth guy ever(considering his celebrity status)and that probably is what made him even more reclusive and stand offish from the Uber fans. 2. They’re all just regular people who have the unbelievable talent and ability to rock harder and unlike any other band. 3. You’ll have to research the Barbie doll connection and the lyrics to the song. It really is timeless.🤘🖖✌️

This song really is about the North American experience growing up just outside of a big city. And being "cast out" or dismissed if you weren't in the cool group of high school kids. It really resonated with many people here in NA. I'm not so sure the lyrics are appreciated by anyone who didn't live in a suburb or big city. Still... the musicianship is always there and this album was their first one to really shift to way more keyboards that ever before and some fans left the band during this time which I understand but to each his or her own. Unpopular Rush is still better than 99% of what was out there. Nice reaction guys. Keep it going 👍

First, love Dominika's shirt. It ties in with your evident love and respect for each other. Secondly, this song is about the experience of growing up in the suburbs, in a subdivision. This is a North American phenomenon. The official music video, although dated, really helps explain the lyrics, which deal with the isolation of growing up in the subdivision environment. Always a good idea to have the lyrics handy to review.

Everyone that listened to this song when it was released could relate to it because it was about disaffected youth. The members of Rush all felt disaffected when they were teens as well, so they wrote a song that reflected that feeling. Your parents tell you what to do, and how to feel, and everyone is subdivided into different groups. Growing up it seems like everyone has it all together but you. You don't seem to fit in anywhere. So in order to fit in you feel as though you must conform to the norms of society. What is everyone else doing? I have to "conform or be cast out." Many of us growing up listening to Rush felt that we had found a group of people (Rush fans) where we fit in.

I think your perception of the members of Rush being down to earth and accessible is true. There are a couple of documentaries that have published about Rush and you guys should definitely watch (one of) them. The one I would recommend is Beyond the Lighted Stage. It is a good documentary. There is an excerpt from it, called dinner with Rush, that others have reacted to and it is a pretty cool segment and is them talking about getting together to start to write their final album, Clockwork Angels. It's quite funny and really shows them as they are (were) together.

Unlike a lot of fans, I don't practice selective deafness. This version is slightly slower in tempo, much heavier t h an it should be, and mixed like a Heavy Metal song when it's definitely more of a New Wave song. Give a listen to the original studio version to hear what this song "should" sound like, when Geddy was still in his prime and the sound engineers didn't fall asleep at the wheel. But the lyrics for this one, and most of them past this date, are going to be almost more important than the musicianship is many cases. The guys showed off how amazing they were during the 70's and entry into the 80's. By this point they started letting the message and composition take center stage. The three of them used their instruments to emphasize the lyrics and the message, rather than overpower it. "Red Sector A" and "Scars" even saw Geddy hang up his bass to focus on singing and playing the keyboards, while "The Pass" and "Manhattan Project" nearly had Alex just chilling out in the background just placing emphasis where it was needed.

Yeah, Rush is a bit of an anomaly. Musically amazing, but the visuals in concert also amazing. Little things like the Barbie dolls in front of Alex, Geddy occasionally had a tip jar on his keyboards. And there's the big visuals like dryers and chicken rotisserie instead of amplifiers. LOL. And then there's always the back screen. I consider the fourth member of the band. South Park, Trailer Park Boys, so many others have appeared on the back screen. South Park introduction to Tom Sawyer is a must to watch. Also Jerry Stiller's skit. All the intermission videos. These guys have a sense of humour like no other band. They also created their own brand of beer. Very Canadian, humble and gracious. I would suggest watching dinner with Rush to get a true perspective. Love watching your reactions and keep up the great work.👍💕🎶🍻🇨🇦

This is one of their top songs in my opinion. The problem with live concert versions done in the later 2000s is Geddy's voice is not what it used to be. It makes it very hard to understand the lyrics and for me personally, difficult to listen to. The musicianship is still 100% - but his voice is difficult. I strongly suggest watching live performances that are done closer to the year the album came out. Of course, there are a few exceptions such as Working Man and La Villa (no voice!). Watch Subdivisions official music video with captions - it will all make sense. Cheers ~

I enjoy the reaction but can I say, when it comes to Rush, if you can’t follow the lyrics, you’ve missed the entire song. Especially in songs like Subdivisions. The music is top notch, but it is the words, the message of the song, that make the song so incredibly powerful!

Snakes and Arrows... No recollection. Try MTV version. That is, MTV was relevant.

There will be not another Neil Peart on life....but Rush should come back...and the only drummer to play the Neil Peart place is: Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment etc)!

AHHhhhh... Welcome to the party, Y'all!!!! First off, THANK YOU for doin' THIS PARTICULAR TRACK. RUSH is my FAVORITE musical experience... because you have to pay attention to the Lyrics. The song writing structure is SOOOOO full of time signature changes/tempo changes which literally PULLS the listener in, holds onto them, & takes you on a RIDE every, SINGLE, TIME!!!! There's a MESSAGE in every song, from politics, elites vs the common peoples, races, ethnic groups, etc. The MOST INFLUENTIAL PROGRESSIVE POWER TRIO IN THE WORLD... RUSH. How can they sound like a ORCHESTRA??? ALL this SOUND coming from 3 BAND MEMBERS is PHENOMENAL!!!! By the way, I subscribed!!!! I'm looking forward to seeing your channel/reactions grow with your musical influences sprinkled in too!!!! Check out their catalog of hits, & their documentary on RU-vid "RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE" for more insight on the band, & the origins of RUSH. Believe me, you won't be disappointed!!!! Peace, Love, & Liberty. MIC DROP 🎤.
