that is the first thing that stuck out to me...I have never seen someone play a Peart song so relaxed ..on top of that doing a really good job at it.She makes it look so wonderfully effortless
I knew Neil for approx 15 years prior to his death as I sold him a ton of motorcycle restoration parts for one of his projects. Can't speak for him but betting he would have enjoyed this rendition. Your playing is great.
My pleasure and I meant every word of it. You're incredibly musical and talented and is pure enjoyment watching your vids. I believe you would have really enjoyed Neil's company and spending time with him. I know I did and I think of him often. Thanks again for the beautiful note and the incredible music. @@debsmithdrums
Well done young lady, and your taste is impeccable by choosing Canada’s favourite rock band, that is loved worldwide. We all miss the talented Professor.
I'm not sure what impressed me most. Your drumming. Or the fact the you were mouthing the lyrics. I remember seeing rush when the females in the audience could be counted on ten fingers and toes. Keep up the Spirit of Neil and Rush.
Love it! Signals came out at the height of my initial Rush fanaticism when I was 14, and this song in particular always resonated with me, as if Neil was writing it about me. I'm still a Rush fanatic at 55 and The Analog Kid is the perfect blend of earlier Rush heaviness & mid-period soundscapes.
Signals is such a great album. It is a hidden gem in their catalog for sure. From beginning to end, there was not one bad song. The transition to synth is there but you still have Alex adding a lot of guitar layers to it which is why I consider this album their best in the synth phase (Power Windows is amazing, too, but something about Signals that retains some of the previous Rush catalogs).
I like the fact that you don't pound the crap out of the drums. You have great stick control. I taught band for 31 years, and you play very even and accurate. Great job!
that gentle touch, both of hands and feet, is admirable. in some ways it reminds me of the appearance of effortlessness that bill bruford's playing had.
When I used to play drums, the one thing I remember about playing along to this song was the fun of the open hi-hat sections. "You move me, you move me" The opening and closing of the hi-hat while fitting in the bass drum parts at the same time. Very enjoyable.
I love the way your attack is so different from Neil's - as is EVERYONE else's .... no one hit like him , but you're still making it work SO WELL . Very musical . You know just how to play your kit YOUR way to really make them speak & sing ( just like with Mob Rules ) , and it feels really right and good alongside Neil's recorded part . Really appreciate your attention to detail . Speaking of attention to detail , I just now noticed the Signals t-shirt . Duh . Only took me a year ! I do hope you are recovered , healthy , and well . And I hope to hear that new snare soon .
Great playing Deborah!!!! That whole album is awesome. I know it's only been a few hours since you posted this,.....but what's next ??? I can't wait to hear whatever it is. Thanks for the performance !!! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦🍻🍻🍻🥂🥂🥂🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thank you so much! Yes, Signals is my favorite. I’m currently working on the first half of a song from Permanent Waves. I’ve also dabbled in a song from p/g and I just might get back to it seriously now since this one is done. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your enthusiasm. Cheers from USA! 🇺🇸
You are the most RELAXED drummer I ever watched! Fantastic job! How long have you been playing? Why don’t you post anymore? Who are some of your favorite drummers? Thank you.
Thank you! I’ve been playing 3 1/2 years now. Life is busy. Reconfigured the kit. Remodeling the house resulting in a new drum space. Released a new cover this week and planning for more in the coming year. Some of my favorites besides Neil are Marco Minnemann, Dirk Verbeuren, Nick Menza, Tommy Aldridge, Vinnie Apice, Tom Brechtlein, Joe Travers, Scott Travis, Vinnie Colaiuta, Joe Morello, etc. I’m inspired by so many!
now that was IMPRESSIVE!!!!! ANNNNNND she sang the whole song while playing it!!! Anytime there is a female having anything to do with Rush, its the coolest thing ever.... NICE JOB!!!!
See… THAT’S how you do it: completely relaxed. I’ve never gotten there. I attempt grievous physical harm upon my poor Tamas every single session, practice or gig. Actually it is slightly worse during a gig. Bravo!
Unique style. It works. Bonus for whispering the lyrics while you played, that’s tough. The speech center is in a different place than body movements. When done right, that’s five different things working together. ✌️😎👍💕
One of my favorites! Great choice and well done! I always liked that part between 2:05-2:10 too. And I'm pretty sure I have that Signals tee shirt somewhere in a box! "Thank you for moving me" is a nice touch too! Great job!
Thanks so much, my friend, and such a tremendous compliment coming from you! I appreciate your taking the time to watch and comment. Those two double bass triplets are quite cool, aren’t they?!! I know that you’re shirt is authentic, unlike mine, haha. I sure would love to have been there. ❤ Thanks again Brian!
WOW! THIS was fantastic! This song is one of my FAVORITES to play along to. Just yesterday I played the entire Signals album and this track twice! I dig how you played it so gently and spot on perfectly. AND singing along with the track! Neil is smiling down at you.
Brilliant, cant believe youre singing along to it too, a great skill im yet to master. Ive been listening to this song since i was 5, still sends chills down my spine
Nicely done. I am a drummer myself and have been listening to Rush since 1979 (oops, I guess now you know I am old(er) ) Also love motorcycles (BMW as fate would have it - Neil's favorite bike too). Anyway, keep up the good work and keep on drumming.
How cool was that, ! I'm socked. If...Deborah scored a goal in the Premier league, She'd simply raise her arm with index finger pointing skyward, as she calmly walked away back to her own half... without even breaking a sweat. Iconic. 👍❤ Fantastic Deb', 👍👍👍
Revel in the accolade Deb, 👍 It takes a special talent to look so 'Cool' & relaxed while playing. So impressive, & a Happy new year to you too, @@debsmithdrums
Wow, I was scrolling through RU-vid for a live version of Analog Kid by Rush, and I found you doing a fantastic cover of it! As a drummer myself, I'm really knocked out by your smooth technique. I've never been a basher myself so I always enjoy watching another drummer dealing out the chops so effortlessly. The lyrics for this song hold a special place for me, ever since I bought Signals on cassette back in my late '80s college days. Keep up the great work and videos 👍You're a very beautiful, talented drummer❤
Thank you very, very much! I’m delighted you stumbled upon this video and even more so that you describe my technique as smooth. What a tremendous compliment for an advanced beginner. This entire album has special meaning to me. It’s the reason I developed an interest in the kit when I first heard the radio hits as a teen and it also inspired me to finally step into the dream 35 years later. Thanks for the encouragement and best wishes on your drumming journey.
