Pros / Cons about this video. Pros: Your playing is incredible and you served the song perfectly. Never over played it and never added anything over the top like some do. Your ability to channel Neil is making Neil fans proud, including myself. Now for the Cons..... Cons: ZERO! HAHA- ya crushed my man. The drums sounded killer and of course all of us gear heads who absolutely love RUSH in the time era not too mention Neils kits during this time are smiling and wanting one. Great tribute kit too! I like how you kept the concept but made it your own. Great job all around. Long live the Holy Trinity. You earned my subscription.
I know this song inside and out, it's on of my favorite Rush songs. I could anticipate every percussion sound I should hear, and you nailed them all. Great stuff.
One of the best tracks on the album. Right along with Witch Hunt and Vital Signs. They're really overlooked imo because of the other big songs from the album.
I tip my hat to you. 53 now, listening to Rush since I've been 10. Lots of players try to nail the drum parts to Rush song, few really do. You did. This was not only fantastic to watch but inspirational like Neil...I want grab my sticks and play.
Yessir! Like that. As a guitar player growing up I was always in the "Alex is the shit" camp. I guess if you play bass, you're in the "Geddy is the shit" camp. It took reaching my 50's and Neil passing away for me to realize how "the shit" Neil actually was. Watching you play this flawlessly almost makes me want to take up the drums. But I know when it looks too easy, that's how hard it is! I'll stick to guitar. After 40 years of playing, on a good day I can just about nail the into to "The Trees"...on a good day.
You should re-record this along with any other RUSH cover you may have done and push back on Geddy and Alex so that it brings the drums to the forefront. It's a great way to self-promote if looking for a job. Plus I like how it sounds with the percussion in front. This other guy on here does that and I've played it through my car and home sound systems and it sounds AWESOME. Not that I don't love Geddy and Alex it's just that I enjoy listening to the drums over any other instrument if I'm the mood
Well done. Nothing super hard, but absolutely nothing repeats. 8 minutes of unique rhythms. One of my favorites. I hear something new almost every time.
Love the kit. I see some familiar 1970s setup features. All you need is a glockenspiel, timbales, temple blocks, crotales, bell tree, tubular bells, and a glass of The Macallan. Definitely the most badass tribute kit I have ever seen. Bravo! Fun to watch. 🤘🥁😮
Reed, When that album came out, I played it for months until I could play and remember every beat like you. I had the same Black Slingerland set that Neil had back in 1976. Anyway, I haven't heard it played so perfectly sine back then. You are a great drummer and you kit sounds amazing. Oh, I ever Viberfized all of my drums like Neil did to his Black Slingerland and his Red Tama kit. I want brag about myself, but myself and a friend of mine, used to play these songs like you just did here for over 20 plus years, but, computers weren't around then and there was no RU-vid. I have watched so many other drummers TRY to play Rush, but it takes a very special individual to really master Neil's Touch.. Great Job !!! Joey..

6:13 your opening the hats with your left and hitting the right bass drum. not having a double bass I could never get that right. awesome work reed. I sat and waited to see how you 'd do that part lol
Excellent playing here. There are a ton of up counts (syncopations) that have to be hit precisely on mark to successfully play this track, and they are done perfectly.
Very good cover, spot on, great job on the ending. I see most drummers doing covers always try to change drum parts. I guess they try to make it their own. I always believed if you do a cover it should match the song note for note.
Outstanding... That's allot of material to retain and the hand patterns were quick crisp and on point...I know how long that must have taken and how much hard work this took....a great replication my friend!!

First, I'm really enjoying these performances. They are done very well and I get the added bonus of looking at that beautiful kit. You guys really did an amazing job refinishing it. I have two questions. 1. what is your cymbal setup? Make, model, and sizes please. 2. In the Son of El Darko video you labelled the the concerts 6, 8, 8, 10. Then the racks 10, 12, 14. Now I think it's clear the racks are 10, 12, 14. But if that's the case then the largest concert looks like a 12. Am I right? If so why the change? Also, please do 2112 and Red Barchetta!
Thanks so much! My cymbals are from left to right.. 20’ AAX crash. 16 AAx crash. 13 hi hats. Top is a quick beat, bottom is a sound edge. 10 dream splash. Another 16 AAX crash. 8 dream splash. 20 Ziljian ping ride. 18 AAX crash . 18 Chad Smith Holy China inverted with a Dave Weckl Evolution Ozone stacked on it. This stack is the closest to Neil’s wuhan china I’ve heard. It’s mounted on a x-hat stand for accurate tension. Next to that is a 22 Dream Pang. . And last on the far right is the 22 swish knocker. Now the concert tom issue. Yes it was 6’8’8’10.. the racks are and remain 10’ 12’ 14’. Going from a 12 concert tom to a 10 rack was impossible to tune in descending pitches. However I figured out the right way Neil tuned his concert toms. And how he skipped toms when starting fills with the high toms. After that I was able to go 6’ 8’ 10’ 12’. And the tuning was right. The concert toms and the rack toms were tuned as two different sets of toms. Rather then them being tuned together. Hope that explains it for ya. And thanks for the nice words and watching. 👍 .. oh I hope to do many more Rush covers. I’ll keep your request in mind..So many songs,, not enough time.
@@reedcording Thank you for responding. That's one of the things I noticed over the years. Neil never went from 12 concert to 12 rack. If he hit the 12 concert he went to the 13 rack, and if he hit the 12 rack he did so from the 10 concert. I always thought it was because of the redundancy. You are now the second person who has said Neil tuned the concerts and the rack toms as two different sets of toms, and that makes sense. I mean Neil has always used weird sizes. I don't know of anyone else who used 12, 13, 15, 18. But I have realized over the last 6 months or so that it makes a lot of sense from a tuning and overall sound perspective. In general anything smaller than a 12 doesn't really sound that good when paired with the bass drum. Double bass fills really need to be played on the bigger toms. But, you have very little size options if your main toms start with a 12. You either have to do 12, 13, 14 in which you will have a hard time differentiating them in the mix because they are only 1 inch a part, or you simply don't have more than 2 rack toms and sometimes that is not enough. So in order to prevent that Neil had the 15x12 rack to separate it from the 13. And by having the 18 floor it allowed him to tune both the 15 and 18 very low, and the 12 pretty high to give the 13 some breathing room tonally. I'm currently, and excruciatingly slowly, putting together a Neil type kit using current Tama Superstar Classics because they sound good and are in my price range. But a 15 isn't even made at that price range. So I'll have to use 12, 13, 14 when I can get the 13. But the 13 has to wait cause I don't even have crashes right now. It was thinking about how to construct the kit that I realized the tuning issue and thought, "You know, if I had an 18 instead of a 16 I could tune the 14 even lower and the 12 higher."
