You heard the man... “the hardest working band out there”. What a compliment coming from a musician such as Geddy Lee...I love this video because they’re both my favorite bands
I am convinced without a doubt that because Neil wrote the Lyrics that is why Rush was so successful. It was so different than anything else that was going on at the time that they just had to be recognized. Props to Kiss also for taking them out. I am sure it helped a lot to get them heard by a large audience.
Peter Criss is married to one of my closest friends and we have talked often about Rush. He absolutely loves Neil Peart as a person. He never talks about his drumming really but more about the time the spent hanging out during the tours. They smoked a lot of weed together, lol
People are constantly worried about criticizing KISS musically...oh my god!! It s seems so difficult to enjoy great stories about two huge bands sharing the same stage.
Things happen for a reason, Neil came into RUSH at the perfect time, because of his incredible playing and amazing lyrics, it jettisoned them into stardom, it took a lot of hard work they paid their dues and they deserve the accolades for sure...man is Neil missed, one of the greatest of all time.
April 2023 and I still can’t listen to “The Garden” without tearing up. There’s quite a few Rush songs that I have to hit “next” because of the waves emotion that hit me.
Absolutely top notch, Kiss 2nd IMO, Rush 4th, The Police 1st (where else), Iron Maiden (3rd). The Sweet, Def Leppard and 'tallica 5th, 6th and 7th. Bowie or Straits for 8th.
@@KOSMICKEN09 Actually they were, Alex were married since early 70's ( still is ) same woman. Geddy and Neil got married not long after this periode. Only Zeppelin and The Stones to rival with Kiss in that matters lol
@@Ieatpaste23 Mr. Paste, I never said I was a musician, let alone say I was a great one. But I do have the ability to recognize talent, musical or otherwise. And I in fact recognized KISS for their talents. They are marginally proficient in playing their instruments and singing, but their true strengths are writing commercially sellable songs within their musical range and marketing themselves and their music to sell that to the masses. That’s where their brilliance lies. If ever asked about talented or gifted rock musicians, most people never talk about the guys from KISS, because they’re not. I just explained what they are good at!
Seeing RUSH live 9th row when your 16 is just a mind blowing event! It was Power Windows and I put that Album on and go back to the Summit in Houston on a cold January night it was epic! RUSH Power Windows, U2 Joshua Tree and Peter Gabriel Secret World were the tree greatest concerts!
You can never overestimate the impact Neal's writing had on the the rock scene, and how countless bands would go on to write meaningful prog masterpieces because of it. R.I.P. Neal. The king of prog.
Try that for one of the the future KISS army, me, but I didn't know yet and it was a block from my house at the local community college in Yakima, WA. I did see the people gathering and moving through my neighborhood and I was well aware that the older kids were up to something and I wanted in on it. Four years later I did see Judas Priest open for UFO and blow the fucking roof off of that place!
I grew up I the 80s. I saw alot of bands. Robert Plant, Def leopard, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Cult, Bill Idol, Truimph, Meatloaf, to name just a few. But, I never got to see KISS, or Rush. Now that concerts are gone. I miss them so much. Kids today have no idea what a good show really is.
I saw every RUSH show starting with Permanent Waves in 1980. My favorite band by far. But, I saw Robert Plant with the Black Crowes open for $5.95. The Crowes played the most blistering opening set I ever saw and Plants Manic Nirvana band was unbelievable! They did a half dozen Zep tunes that were as good as the real thing! And, you are right. The shows are big productions, but they just lack any real substance.
@@jasonlacroix6083 one of my last concerts was Metallica in Ottawa. What a show. MTV was filming it. When they did garage days, the had one lightbulb. And it was great. I actually had a ticket to see KISS. but, I gave it to my friend. Wanted to see Rammstein in Montreal in August. Unfortunately.....
@@drivenbyrage5710 Metallica was one of my other favorites. I liked how they would hit the stage and play a few songs with the house lights still on. Then they'd drop the lights and launch into Sad but True. Always a great show from those guys. Kirks guitar is some of the best ive ever seen.
@@jasonlacroix6083 yeah, but Lars Ulrich. He just seems greedy after the whole Napster situation. I say you have millions already. Why not give your music away. Then sell tickets and tshirts. People would flock to thier shows. You get what you give. And they have alot. It's a shame they don't want to give back,to the very people who made them famous, and rich.
@@drivenbyrage5710 I can understand that royalties are what pay these guys. But, I have an iPod loaded with bootleg music. It's a problem for someone else to solve. My first shows were six or seven bucks to attend. The Eagles charged $13.00 in 1980 and that was expensive back then. I paid $175 to see them on the Long Road out of Eden tour. But, it was probably the single best musical performance I'd ever seen. They're phenomenal! Also paid $175 to see the final Rush tour. I'm always willing to shell out for good seats. I stopped buying tickets in advance and use scalpers instead. But, I usually end up getting in for under face value. These guys make their money doing shows now. Those boys in Metallica are doing just fine.
rush - ac-dc--bon jovi-motley-crue-scorpions-wasp-poison-ted nugent-iron maiden ,priest, cheaptrick....etc etc all opened for kiss....gene found van halen in a club and helped them get signed.
It's beyond sad that I'll never see Rush in concert again but I completely understand why Geddie and Alex refuse to play without Neil. Kiss and Rush. Completely different bands and music style but they still got along really well. Just goes to show.
Gene Simmons:"what the F did these guys do when they went back to the hotel room?" Knowing Rush, they probably went back and practiced their instruments.
Well back in the 70’s I saw these two in Portland,, Oregon at the Paramount Theater,(now called the Schnitzer Hall), and will corroborate what Geddy is relating. Great, great show in a smaller , intimate venue with festival seating and pretty much anything goes. One of our buddies even walked up on the stage during Kiss and was not ejected from the place. Regardless what a person hears about how Portland has disintegrated, and it’s true, in the 70’s Portland, Oregon was a fun , fun place to be and to go to concerts.
I've been a RUSH fan back in 1976 , the large sound and huge talent in all three is what first drew me in . The lyrics are a huge part of the music and yes Neil is an imaginative highly intelligent man . I've seen RUSH many times as well as seeing KISS many times , I almost caught Peter Chris drum stick but bounced off my finger tip . I don't think Gene Simmons was being serious just that KISS the band was very much into groupies
@@GHOSTRIDERNOMAD Stories of "The Bag"🤣 Atleast Ace had fun with the guys of RUSH😎 It also shows that although KISS had great lineups open for them & Gene definitely knows what he's doing, that Gene became a kill-joy when things didn't go his way. Ace had fun with the tour. Gene wanted to f'k groupies. Yeah...having fun is cool. Groupies are cool, too. Balance it out & relax, too. These vids are great😎🎶🎸👍
I will always believe that if John Rutsey would have stayed in Rush, the world would have really never heard of them. They would be a throwaway question in a trivia game. But because Rutsey quickly became disillusioned with wanting to be a rock star and quit - and this is while mostly people in Canada really knew who Rush was and the rest of us didn't - and then Neil, who wanted to be a rock star, came in, the world had then gotten the gift that is Rush.
John Rutsey was a good drummer and vocalist. Neil Peart is, well Neil Peart and the final key to Rush as we know them. I think they could have had success with either but the twenty plus Gold albums in a row which they achieved, something I once read that they and Kiss were the only bands at the time to achieve, probably more likely with Neil Peart than with John Rutsey. Also Neil's reputation as the greatest drummer in the world on the Rushmore of rock drummers to be certain, often preceded actually hearing them. I heard that Neil and Geddy were the best Drummer and bassist respectively before I actually heard their music. It was not played on my local radio that I can remember until Tom Sawyer.
Musically KISS and RUSH do not belong in the same FN universe much less the same YT vid. It's like when Hendrix opened for The Monkees. It's the equivalent of Steely Dan opening for Warrant. Or Alice in Chains opening for Beiber.
That's been said. It's wrong, but that's been said. They put on the make-up because that was the natural extension of what was going on in the era of Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls. They just wanted to do it bigger and better than the other bands wearing make-up.
DESTROYER is a damn great Album by kiss. The ramones were not virtuosos and people love em. Hey I just love music.. I like prog as much as a good hard rock or punk song. Exactly what vista said.
Thats the difference between real musicians and money hungry bands. Kiss was bubble gum rock and only cared about pussy and money. They did care about fans but the music was shitty. anyone could play it. Rush used their minds musically. It came later for them, but it came.
Ignorance can be so... ignorant. KISS was the musical descendant of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Alice Cooper, Slade, The Raspberries, Humble Pie, and The Faces, etc. KISS' style is what I call, "Mid Atlantic," as it isn't quite British (being Americans), but it's very, VERY influenced by the British styles, so it doesn't quite sound American, either. KISS was tigher and more accomplished than the New York Dolls, who were the kings of New York City when KISS started out. Rush is on another level, but they were doing a completely different thing than what KISS was doing. There's room for both in Rock. KISS, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, etc, on one side and Rush, Yes, Deep Purple, etc, on the other.
OMG if I ever met Geddy I would Tell them that Kiss is not even in your League.. I cant stand Gimmic get-ups.....its Stupid, the music sucked and Paul and Gene Cant even Sing....Geddy is way beyond great.....
And he would probably take offense at your comment. As he said, they became close and to this day they have gratitude for KISS taking them on their first national tours.
@@joedimaggio3687 Paul in his vocal prime was unbeatable. I don't get the hate from the rush fans, especially how this is a video saying the two bands are friends.
"I'm not a fan of Rush and don't enjoy their music" would be acceptable. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, music is an art and everyone likes different things. "Rush sucks"...get the fuck out
