He actually messes up at the 3:05 mark... hits the cymbal AND THERE IS NO SOUND. Hits it like a second later and it crashes nicely. Playing to a soundtrack.
Yes they are . As gene simmons once said I never understood why they never partied and why women weren't always in their rooms. Well while kiss was getting laid Rush was practicing. And are one and if not the tightest band in the world.
Nick Korte Because Rush did have wives when they started out i thought. that could be a reason. Geddy did say they did alot of pot tho. And those women rockstars smash didnt see talent. They saw MONEY.
+Nick Korte because no one likes complicated musicians where as the simple progression catchy songs get more attention. That's just how it works now...no one really give a shit for complicated stuff. Make something simple and catchy and have a unique image and everybody well jump on your nuts lolz
+Maya Ash I know they are. I'm replying to the other guys comment about How Kiss got laid more than Rush. Simple because Kiss is just more catchy simple and unique image that's just how it works in today's music you know? Who get laid more the complicated jazz musicians with no image or uniqueness or the rock band who has a unique image and creates simple catchy songs?
Ron Baran Yup, but that's only because he's in the company of two other world-class musicians who frequently rank in top 10's of best bass players and drummers ever. I can't think of any other band with the same incredible musical prowess as this trio. I think the odds are one in a million for three people with this level of talent to meet each other and start a band.
Ron Baran I did say two OTHER world-class musicians. Alex's playing is nothing short of marvelous; this song and La Villa Strangiato are excellent examples of that. He also played that fantastic guitar solo on Porcupine Tree's "Anesthetize". Alex Gittins The Who and Led Zeppelin are also great examples of rock bands consisting of only really talented musicians (two of my favorites), but I can't see them nailing something as complex as YYZ live.
As a bassist, fuck YYZ, it's harder than La Villa Strangiato, Jerry Was a Racecar Driver, and Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) all put together. Geddy Lee isn't a man, he's a God.
***** I'm with pug....I'm WAAAAAY better at Jerry was a Racecar Driver. Just too bad I don't have have a 6 string (just a 5 atm) so I technically can't play it correctly. Granted I've found that my niches seem to be tap and slap styles and not so much fast tempo complicated classic style bass licks. I can do the intro of YYZ but that's about where my skill stops and it's been that way with me trying to learn it for at least 7 or 8 years.
***** Most Rush songs are up your alley for Death Metal, actually. Outside of lacking triplicates, Geddy Lee's aggressive style will help with transitions. Most metal doesn't have complicated bass lines anyway.
At 2:52 starts one of the most accomplish piece of music ever created by a human mind; bass guitar, string guitar, synth and drums, combined in perfect armonic synergy. Thirty plus years later still gives me goosebumps.
Rush's music is technically among the best... in the world of rock. But that's just it. If you only listen to rock, you will be easily impressed. To compare them to Mozart and Beethoven is just not accurate, and I'm sure Rush would agree.
Yes, they wrote it as a tribute to Toronto Airport, saying they spent so much time in and out of it, that they decided to make this using Morse code for YYZ. YYZ in Morse is -.-- -.-- --.-
Geddy's bass , every single one of them is very distinctive . . . As is Neil's drums Alex is an absolute beast but I feel it would be a little harder to isolate him out of a crowd
Too bad he did not grab his jetglo 4001 - and yes, i know he used his JB In all tracks from MP but two (Red Barchetta and Vital Signs as far as i remember)
I saw this cover today: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8_HeVyc5-GY.html and while everyone did a great job, it was the bass tone that I found lacking. Then I came hunting for the original :)
Funny I go back and forth between Rush and Yes, truly epic bands. If I was stuck on an island with these two bands to listen to I'd be a ok. Of course I love other music, but these guys are true genius the way they mix the lyrics with the music. I believe only a few people really get it.
Geddy Lee looks so non-chalant about the whole thing! absoluting shredding that bassline and he looks like he's trying to decide what to have for dinner tonight!
Well, he's playing on his own signature series Fender. So its like riding a bike for him. Wish I had that level of comfort on the bass. There is a female bassist Anna, on youtube know as Annappocalypsee (or something), she is super bad ass and does a cover of this song. Check it, watch it, fall in love!
When I was young my father listen to rush every day every time and I say to him : I don't like this it's a very bad music.. Now I am 28 years old and I love them I'm listing to all them musics... And I regret to can't listen and speak to my passion of rush with my father.... My dream will be to go with him in a concert.. But it's too late. Thanks to my Algeria father who try to show me the real good music. Ps= sorry for my language I am French 😅
Dude good story. I was struggling as a teen with a broken family when my best friend's dad took us to see Rush in Montreal in 1983. I gained high respect for that man and he became a huge influence in my life, and still is. Something about Rush is very healing, just keep on listening. :)
None of these guys got the credit they deserve. And in the time of their heyday they were one of the most underplayed bands on the radio. They were considered "too hard rock" or "not mainstream enough." Now they're "old." I think they are timeless and masterful. I still remember reading Omni magazine and listening to them as a kid.
Anyone who is a fan of music, period should appreciate Rush's incredible catalog. They never stopped expanding with their works, so they always seemed intriguing even to the curious. The fans know how great THEY ARE!
What if the very best guitarist in the world and the very best bassist and the very best drummer all got together and formed a band..... oh yeah...that would be a RUSH!
I'm not a Dream Theater fan but I play bass. John is very accomplished in areas Geddy is not. Geddy is far from being the very best bassist. But, I think YYZ is a great piece of rock music. BTW, Geddy cites his friend, Jeff Berlin, as the best bassist in the world. Not far off in my opinion.
Rest in peace Neil Peart 12 September 1955 - 7 January 2020 Rest in peace, we love you, you great soul. You will live on through the musical achievement of Rush.
The video editing on this is spot on. I love Rush and always have ,even through the eighties when they got a little too overboard on synths. But the editing on this is exquisite. All the little detail riffs in this song Between Alex, Geddy and the Professor are what makes it so unmistakable. And the Editor deserves a great amount of credit on this one. WELL DONE!
The first time I hit the tarmac at the Detroit or Toronto airport I looked for the luggage trams and sure enough - many were tagged with YYZ!!! I tried to always sport my Rush tees and hollered out a big hell yea!!!
I think what's happening is that they're actually playing, but the live sound is muted and the album track is overlayed on the video. Example: at 3:06, Neil Peart clearly hits the cymbal on his right (our left) but no sound is heard.
It's so refreshing to just watch craftsmen deliver their creation without all of the histrionics around 'selling' their song; makeup, running, jumping, screaming...spare me. Rush was so unpretentious yet so impeccably gifted. So Canadian.
They make each other better, they could never replace one this is Rush period. My favourite instrumental of theirs is definitely La Villa Strangiato that just tells me a story beyond words, can't believe it doesn't have more views.
uh no. Lester B Pearson is in Mississauga, Ontario. It's close to Toronto, but the Airport is physically located in Mississauga. The Billy Bishop Airport is in Toronto.
Yes, technically CYYZ is in Missisauga, but it's called Toronto Pearson International Airport. YYZ VOR/DME is called Toronto VOR/DME (where the song and the rhythm originally came from). Rush is from Willowdale, North York.
I miss my RUSH! My favorite band of all time. Geniuses ..all 3 of them! I seen them LIVE only 13 times & won free concert tickets too! Their lyrics were intellectual and their chords, complicated. Not like the garbage of today that takes no thought. We miss you Mr. Neil Peart❣️
Can't get enough of the bass groove 2min in. That little drop down back to his groove - right after the pinch harmonics at the end of his 3rd solo (2:14). Freakin brilliant. Adds so much momentum. Little touches like that throughout that blow my mind.
I'm almost 52 now, when I saw the cover of 2112 album back in 1978 from my older cousin. Then he played it from front to back... Hooked ever since. YYZ just epic!
G Cormier California yeah 2112 was my second album purchase from them... my first one was fly by night.. I thought... "hmm heard this was a good band"... Anthem blew my mind right away
i honestly can say that ive seen alot of bands in my time but Rush is the absolute best band ever...timing, guitar both alex and geddy, neil peart...so happy they walk the Earth with their music. TOTAL control of their instraments and there will never EVER be a 3 man band like them in our lifetime...GUARANTEED. How could there be? lyrics, talent perfection of thier instaments..wont happen
How does 3 amazing musicians land at the same spot on Earth ? Hard to believe they have been making me deaf for the last 47 years! Seen them many times live in the last several decades. Reading Neil's book Ghost Rider now. Incredible,
how in the hell does this video have dislikes. I mean what the fuck if You cant appreciate this kind of musician ship you're not even allowed to listen to music.
ThE Herbivore You sound like your were born in the wrong generation. Also the video was probably disliked by people that noticed the bad syncing in the video to a different recording.
I started listening to Rush back when this first came out in jr high now as a grandfather I’m still playing on my head phones in my man cave…seen them in concert in Little Rock and OKC..Neal played a drum solo..you could hear a pin drop between licks.RIP sir
Watching these 3 musicians brings a tear to my eye. They elevate music to new heights. These songs I've heard them many times over the years... But to watch them play these songs its like hearing them for the first time. They never get old. There is a magic to them. Love you guys.
Alex is one of the truly unsung guitar heroes. Very few guitarists could have hung what THAT bassist and THAT drummer. Alex was a beast in his own right.
RIP Neil thank you so much for sharing your gift with us and leaving a legacy of great music that exists thankfully because good music is somehow unable to be made any longer.
Have seen them live several times. They can play this. There's a reason why Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are considered by many to be the best ever. And Alex is WAY under-rated on leads.
Pikaboss hmm...this is odd...I remember seeing another video I was responding to and somehow I apparently accidentally put the comment on here. Obviously I know there are no lyrics...lol.
I've always looked at Rush this way...it's not that they can play all the incredibly technical stuff, odd time signatures, inversions, etc...it's that they freaking WROTE it! I know a lot of drummers that are ridiculously good, some play by ear, some have studied their whole lives, rudiments, wood-shedding for hours and at the end of the day they can pretty much play any Rush song...but to come up with it. To write those lyrics, create those licks, and to do it with precision. That's what gets me. Talk about planetary alignment, luck, skill, right time at right place, divine intervention...whatever but thank the lord they met.
Best band of all time. They came up with so many complex beats and patterns and grooves. They combined all kinds of music together.. No one else sounds like Rush.. at all.. not even close. I Usually say stuff like.... Geddy was the best basist ever or Neil was the best drummer ever... But Alex is the best guitar player ever.... And im talking about over my favorite guitar player of all time , Randy Rhoads. I love when i was just getting into Rush... i had to listen to a song like 100 times to finally understand the beat and how they had so many different parts to a song... making the song a story.. taking your mind of a journey of thoughts and feelings... haha .
Never has there been in my humble opinion a greater guitarist that incorporates rhythm, riffs and musical harmony all combined with song writing as great as Alex Lifeson. As a Torontonian when i was young my first experience going to a concert was at Massey Hall to witness Rush on the second night of their first live album "All The Worlds a Stage" ... my jaw dropped and i was never the same again ... Alex makes me so proud to be a Canadian.
Saw theses dudes couple times in Montreal back in the day( think hemispheres, moving pictures) MOST AMAZING CONCERT IVE EVER BEEN TO!!! Wish I remembered more,,, ha
+TheBizzeh He said Bonzo was a pussy...If there is one man that is NOT a pussy it's John Henry Bonham. Neil Peart is a fantastic drummer. But he cannot reach the heights of Bonham's drumming.
Dorian Samaniego its obvious that someone copied and pasted the studio recording over this which was a special little "inside the studio's" thing that rush did. no bad editing, just bad copying skills
As a poor at best guitar player,I could closely watch any one of these three masters and be completely amazed and blown clean outa my socks by there skills as a musician. I grew up playing in a punk band and still listen to punk and heavy stuff but always admired rush and if i had to pick only 10 albums to listen to the rest of my life any one of rush's albums would be in that pile.
There will never be another Rush style band , Neil is like the perfect link sewing it all together , geddy lee vocals and everything else he worked in over the years along with bass class of its own , Alex ,,, Crazy enough to keep up with the other two adding his own defined twist and over the top lead work , from the time these 3 released the 2112 album , that alone was a master piece of creative work never heard before and was a boost to my ability to learn guitar , if you played , you where not cool until you played 2112 , so if your starting to play when you read this , your just not cool until you learn and play 2112 ,
