I like Alex's comment in response to a reporter's question on how it took so long for them to get down there (to South America) to perform. He replied something like "Well I over-slept, had to brush my teeth and then the elevator had issues - but we're here now!"
As I've read once: "the crowd feat. Rush. It has taken so long for us brazilians to meet those three we were simply out of Control. And the setlist was perfect. Just perfect. YYZ and 2112 are stuck on me till forever.
April 18,2023, Toronto Canada, I am humbled watching these fans loving our Rush, knowing every note, every pause and every word of every song. Such amazing Fans in Rio ❤ They showed us the Love ! Look at their beautiful faces ! I’m so humbled by these beautiful faces ❤.
When you have such mastery over your instruments, you get this. Exactly how Freddie Mercury could get an entire crowd to do the call-response with him, whether it was in person, across the ocean on tv, or years after his death
Oh hell yeah, they were like an organism that was driven by their music! Can just imagine what they felt in seeing the crowd reaction. Overwhelming I imagine
And some think us Canadians are boring!! Was 12 when this came out! This does make the studio version sound average! Great crowd!! Still have not got tired of it!!
@@genedrakes686 i remember when it first came out and i bought the LP. i listened to it and, even though i liked Tom Sawyer and Limelight, i just didn't get it ! took me listening to it off and on over and over again to finally get it....then i understood that this is probably the best album they have ever done and the only album of theirs that i listen to front to back to this day !
I'm sure the first time I saw Rush was on the Grace under Pressure tour in 85. Marillion opened for them. At Radio City Music Hall. The funny thing was this was one of the first rock shows to play at R.C. The ushers were all old geezers who were accustomed to dealing with Christmas shows and lighter family fare. They were yelling at the fans not to stand up during the show! Guess who won out. I actually saw Dire Straits at the hall later that year or perhaps 86 and the ushers had obviously been told my management to knock off their bully tactics. Both great shows and the acoustics in that hall are phenomenal. Better days,(sigh).
@@kevinmcdonald6477 I also saw Rush for the first time on Grace Under pressure....I was 14 years old and was fucking blown away. Saw them 25 more times after that
I do not often reply to someones post, but you are spot on with your comment their music will live on long after my generation has passed on I was born in the 60's the last of the Baby Boomer;s but at least I got to grow up with Rush
You rarely ever saw the guys in Rush react or vibe with the crowd. They were always so locked in to what they were doing. But here they were blown away. Even Neil was watching the crowd.
@@lucasesteves4366 I believe its a "millenials" thing, man... Posting it ointo social media aparently has become more important than actually being there, present, in the moment... you know???
Geddy Lee: "We didn't even know if anyone from South America had even heard of us." How could anyone on this planet have never heard of RUSH? Well done Brazil!!!!!!
@@ThatPerthFan So sad - will pray for all you as well Down Under. And keep up the good fight against total tyrannical control over your lives as your government uses COVID19 as justification to do so. Stay firm - hold the line. We are dealing with it here as well
Over the years I have come to find that a lot of people know of Rush and have an opinion already without even listening to their music. Very similar thing with the Grateful Dead in my opinion.
The crowd sucks...a bunch of newbies jumping around who know nothing about "our" band. Place any American rock band in that hall and that inebriated crowd will freak out.
Amazing how they developed a symphony from letters of the Toronto Airport to reach out to the world. Incredible to see the energy of the energy of the crowd in Rio de Janeiro.
Well said, I've been to hundreds of shows, hundreds of bands, clubs to stadiums and I have never seen crowds react the way the fans in Brazil react. Always puts a smile on my face.
NOBODY and i mean NOBODY has the passion and intensity of music fans than do the people of Brazil! I believe that RUSH was blown away by the fans spirit as much as the fans were blown away by the performance of RUSH! Muito Obrigado Brazil! From a hometown fan of RUSH in Toronto, Canada! ✌💪
Are u still in Rio is it true that cell phones have made the crowds there less energetic as they use to be since there more interested in taking selfies and posting on social media as they are watching the band play ? Cell phones made USA concerts boring and dumb like everyone's filming the entire concert over here .
+Fastguitars There is so much evidence that dates back to the early 70s that that everyone els around the world especially Europe are better at enjoying Concerts than us Americans lol
I have been a Rush fan for 40 years and watching this video has blown me away. The crowd witnessed their magic that night, and responded accordingly. Much respect to Rush and the Brazilians.....
I was there! Wow, it was twenty years ago, time goes by too much fast. I was only 22, the energy of this concert was amazing, at Maracanã Stadium, the football temple, after a 28 year wait for these guys to come to Brazil. So, the crowd was insane. At this song, "if you didn't jump along, you would die"!! 🙂
@@zachsmith3 Yes, it was. In fact, first time they ever came to South America at all. Geddy said he didn't even know that Rush had any South American fans at all, only to be met with this...
@@MrConstantine02 same thing happened with Pearl Jam, their first gig in Brazil was only in 2003 or so, after that Eddie Vedder gave an interview saying how stupid they were for not coming there earlier, given how amazing the crowd was. After that first show, they went to Brazil every tour.
Another amazing factor is the age of the audience. Teenagers and all others rocking to music made 40 years ago and played by artists in their 60's. There will never be another rush like Rush. RIP Neil.
That was 2003. They were 50 then and 22 years had passed since Moving Pictures. But even in their last live concerts in 2015, they still delivered. So in a sense, you are right.
Not only that, but at North American Rush shows, how often did you this many women in the audience! South American girls have no interest in Justin Bieber! They love their hard rock music.
@@jeremysmith9696 Not sure how many times I have heard the song. Better know it as they my hometown band! Was a kid when this new! However this version can still give a chill like it's being seen for the 1st of countless times! The HOF induction very cool! To hear Toronto and the crowd goes crazy is cool! Possibly even very cool!!😀🇨🇦
I'm Scottish and before I die I have to go to a concert in South America. Whether it's Argentina or Brazil or wherever the crowds are fuckin phenomenal
Hahaha...dude comments on a video of Prog Rock Gods Rush playing their signature math geek instrumental to comment about a Skillex "live" show. Brilliant!!!!
RIP Neil Peart: virtuoso drummer, lyricist and author. YYZ: The aviation code for Toronto's, Pearson Airport is YYZ. Neil heard the Morse Code and jammed with Geddy and they all came up with this! When the band saw YYZ on their luggage it meant they were coming home-to Canada-to us...
The kicks. Neil Peart's kick placements are insane. It's what keeping me come back to this video over and over again. They are way more energetic than the original. How can a live performance top the original recording?
How do I even write a comment that's worthy of this performance? I challenge *anybody* to find another video where the crowd and the band were anywhere close to being this much in sync, lost in the energy, giving absolutely 100% to each other. Not to mention that Rush nailed this live performance far better than their recorded one. Love these guys. And to be able to live the rest of your life, however short (RIP Neil), with this memory... just wow. /edit: OK, I was wrong. Metallica playing in Moscow was beyond this. But I still give it second place. 🙂
The only one that comes to mind was Metallica playing Enter Sandman in front of 1.6m people in Moscow towards the end days of the Soviet Union. That was in the midst of people tasting relative freedom after 40+ years of anti-west sentiment and oppression. And it still wasn't as good as this!
Nothing like going to a rock concert in South America, especially Brazil. I had the great experience of living in Brazil for three years. I saw show sin Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo and the crowds were always amazing.
the crowd in this moment became the 4th member of RUSH. Also isolate Geddy on this version of YYZ, its some of the sickest hardest perfect bass playing that has ever been done.
Acacio Siqueira Me neither! The closest I’ve ever seen was AC/DC live in River Plate, and even the crowd at that show isn’t even on the same level as the crowd was at this show. Too bad I wasn’t even born in 2002.
I saw AC/DC in Paris during the same tour, and for me it was the most disappointing crowd I've ever seen, the show was great, but I was just in the middle of old dudes just standing there like they were watching TV... The opposite with what's recorded at River Plate. I just think Parisians are dickheads, and paris isn't rock n' roll, South America is not a natural place for this too, but at least people there know how to have fun.
yeah thats how we do it man... ha ..i saw them in america as well..but im back in brasil and i went to see them agaian...i was there at this concert...was a lot of fun..
Saw Rush 13 times. While I don't think everyone just "sat there," I can tell you that American crowds changed after the Rush in Rio video dropped. Best live album ever. Best live convert video ever. These are clearly football fans. Go to a football match, you'll see fans going off like this. (Not American football, what the rest of the world calls football and we call soccer).
Me da escalofrios de la emocion, el publico Brasilero se entrega a Rush como a ninguna otra banda del mundo, son un ejemplo de que el Rock Progresivo en Sudamerica es un estilo de vida.
Time and time again, I come to watch this video and it's effects on my soul are always just as deep. Been a fan of Rush since 1985, and I figure, I'll be listening to Rush till the day I die. Best band ever!
Yup. I remember going to the record store to buy the vinyl album of Moving Pictures when it was released. I have seen them in concert three times and am just reminiscing a bit. Definitely a legend and influence to many of us, Peace.
@@samriddell5982 Whoa! That's a tough question. Tom Sawyer hits pretty high up for me personally. YYZ or LA VILLA STRANGIATO.... Fly By Night? I have been listening to a bunch of my favorites right now. What about you?
Should I say anything more!!!! One word - RUSH!!!!! These 3 Canadian studs never fail to put on an epic show. Just turned 49 couple weeks ago and I’m proud to say I’ve seen my fellow countrymen live at least 20-25 times and every one was better than the first. Every huge rock star when asked who their favorite band was growing up and every single one of dont hesitate to say RUSH. The best
I used to watch this every once in awhile, because it always gives me goose bumps. 60,000 singing along to an instrumental in a country RUSH had never visited prior to that tour. Now, I watch with the same goose bumps, along with tears in my eyes, and the feeling of my heart being ripped out of my chest. RIP to the GOAT, The Professor, Pratt, Maestro, The Great One, Neil Peart. My hero!
Also worth mentioning- official sales of Rush albums in South America had been low and most of their popularity had been down to unofficial copies of albums and bootlegs.
God please bless the people of Brazil who never fail to love their band. They did the same for Queen concerts. What a wonderful, beautiful way to show and give love. Brazil goes to a concert and act like it's their job, like their life depended on it!!! I love you back Brazil!!!
Had the privilege of seeing the Moving Pictures tour at the Omni in Atlanta. Four rows back, center. As a drummer, it was truly like a religious experience when they played this song. So many times on my set of Pearls, trying to match this perfection. Never made it, but damn it was a blast trying. God bless Neil, the greatest drummer of my lifetime, and also one of the finest lyricist. Rest easy brother.
I WAS THERE ALSO, AT THE OLD OMNI IN ATLANTA! I sat right next to stage, where the guys came onstage from the right side! We yelled at them as they passed by, & Alex turned his guitar & reflected a spotlight at us! It was AWESOME! O.M.G.!!! 💪🏼😎👍🏼
4:25: the look on Neil's face. My God how I love hearing him play. I've come to the conclusion that of all the incredible guitarists from the 80s and heavy metal bands, Alex has emerged as my all-time favorite. His solos and work remain captivating still.
The fastest and most accurate at that speed, but far from the best. He lacks the fifth string and sensitivity. He should put together a nicer bass guitar sound using effects. That's my opinion.
I can happily say I was there, in the middle of the crowd. And now I wish this stands as a homage to Neil (and the rest of the Band). People there were not just “singing” YYZ, but exploding in ecstasy as this tune represents much of what Rush stands for Rock and Roll (and for ex-musicians-wannabe like myself). This images speak for themselves as an everlasting homage. RIP my childhood idol. You were one those very few to transcend music itself and to become a living mythological god. You were sort of a silent sheperd for me. Thank you very much indeed. Love from Brazil.
Could anyone imagine the power of the fans to "sing" along and dance along with an amazing instrumental piece! Rush is, and always will be one of, if not the BEST bands ever! The way they move this crowd is magical, ethereal and absolutely out of this world!!
Jesus it looked like I was tripping almost the way the crowd was jumping up and down. Looked almost like they were just waves rising and falling, they were so synced up. Why can't north american audiences be that rowdy?
@Old man this people arent poor, but this was the first rush show in Brazil, so that is a factor. But brazilian audience was like that on every show, not only on big international ones. Rich or poor.
The pure joy of listening to Rush live. These Brazilian fans sure know how to sing along with an instrumental. I wish I had the luck to have seen Rush in concert atleast once and now I never will.
Recently I saw a band say something like “Have you ever seen a crowd rock like this?” And while their crowd was hyped, they will never top Brazil singing to an instrumental. This is the best crowd I’ve ever witnessed. And I can’t think of a more deserving band.
