Russell Roy was born in Highland, Illinois in 1951. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970. After training as an aviation mechanic, he served with the 1st and 3rd Marine Air Wings, including assignments in Okinawa and Thailand during the Vietnam War, and then in Yuma, Arizona before his discharge in 1974. He currently serves as an alderman in Grafton, Illinois, and is actively involved with the project to build the National Memorial of Military Ascent.
