Russia will build a small nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan, the first such project in post-Soviet Central Asia, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said. The announcement came after Mirziyoyev held a meeting with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Tashkent on May 27.
Mirziyoyev hailed the project as “vital” in remarks after the talks, noting that Uzbekistan has “its own large reserves of uranium.”
If the agreement is implemented, the plant would become the first in Central Asia, further increasing Russia’s influence in the region. Russian state-owned energy firm Rosatom, said that the project envisions building six reactors with the total capacity of 330 megawatts.
