Yeah, 7.2 million sure is a great discount on Alaska. They only sold it for that much because they thought Alaska was a useless piece of land and that selling it to the USA would offset the designs of Great Britain, but man, were they mistaken and they’re just so frustrated that they realized that too late. Alaska has been proven to be worth a lot more than what Russia sold it for as it has become a good home for a good number of American citizens and has many useful and valuable natural resources that Russia was completely unaware of back when they sold it. You did not mention several items about the purchace. Here are more details. During President James Monroe's 2 terms the Russian Government offered their Alaska holdings to then Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. This offer was turned down. Later in 1863 the Russian Navy had 3 ships in the Atlantic Ocean late in the fall season. Being too far from their own base before it would be iced in and unable to reach. The Russian Tsar contacted the US Secretary of State for the need of a winter season anchor base. President Lincoln allowed the Russian ships to winter in New York's harbor. This produced a favor to the US in 1867. They would sell their Alaska claims for 7 million dollars and an extra 200 thousand dollars for the improvements left by the Russian American Fur Company. In October in 1867 the offical trade was signed and payment made by check from the US Government. This occured in Sitka and is well remembered. Thank you for you video. The US government now has so much debt that we will have to sell Alaska to pay it off. Sadly, this sale would pay off only some of tthe debt. I will guess that we will sell it to China.
