Precisely, Donbas and beyond sits atop of the largest as yet untapped gas reserve in the world, even larger than Qatar. Putin needs this to deny Ukraine and compensate for his loss to the EU. Cut the insurance coverage for any and all ships going in and out of Russia, that's 97% of all insurance companies that insures international shipping. They will have to self insure and they don't have the ability. Without insurance shipping can not pass through the Suez Canal, or the straights of Constantinople between the Black sea and the Mediterranean. Also completely cut Russia off from the entire Swift network, this will bring the Bolshevik economy to it's knees.

The long and short of it is, no. They can’t keep absorbing these losses in hardware and experienced personnel. Look at how their tactics have already changed. Their jets and helicopters no longer fly long range sorties over none friendly ground, and the number of cruise missile strikes is diminishing rapidly. The only advantage they have left of thousands of artillery pieces. And if Ukraine gets efficient at destroying them while preserving their own artillery, the war will eventually shift in Ukraine’s favor.

This has been an abysmal failure on the part of Russia. It's made tactical gains, and will continue to make some more. But having gained a further ~10% of the poorest end of the poorest country in Europe, having destroyed it, it's done so at huge cost. In the long term it's very hard to see how Russia can make anything useful out of this. The fact that countries such as some of the African nations don't condemn Russia's actions is not surprising given their own huge economic and political failings.

To date, the Russians have lost what amounts to be a heavy Corps (4 Divisions) in troops, equipment and supplies. However, those loses have to be put in the context that the majority of men lost were combat troops (who take years to train). The equipment losses are Russia's most modern ground equipment, aircraft, surface ships and a significant portion of their stocks of precision guided weapons. That the Russians are drawing T-62M's from their war reserve stocks shows how low they've run in 1st line equipment, how desperate they are to husband those resources and how many causalities they are willing to accept to do it. This begs the question, how willing are the Russians to see their son's killed to conserve T-90's?

Russia is fighting a lower-tech war of attrition in which state-of-the-art weapons are not needed and human life, on either side, is not valued. I believe Adolf Putin is fully prepared to wage a twenty-year war, and most Russians, for now, agree with him so long as he can show progress.

Bill Browder stated in a video he believes Putin will continue the war until he has won. Russia's income is such that Putin can sustain the war for some time. Income = Expenses. But there are other factors which may force Putin to quit the war. For example, unemployment and inflation are increasing in Russia. Also, many educated and skilled people are leaving Russia for good. So, for how long can the war go on? I believe Putin will push Russia to the breaking point. Now he may believe he is within reach of owning the Donbass region and continue pushing his army. Also, the war is affecting many other countries economies adversely. Exactly. The one ting that has come out of all this, is that Putin and his cronies and Generals have shockingly discovered that their supposedly all conquering unstoppable army, isn't. And their big ace card - thousands upon thousands of tanks - no longer carries *anything* like the weight they always felt it did. Their prime tactic of old, was always to send masses of tanks in, then their opponent just backs down and surrenders. Very clearrly, the effectiveness of Western anti-tank weapons has well and truly hit home. So now it's plan B, with endless artillery bombardments and missile strikes. These outdated 1950's tactics simply would not be anything like as effective against a well trained and equipped NATO force. Once this is all over, Putin - or whoever takes his throne - will need to deal with huge issues. By then, much of Europe will have ceased importing Russian oil and gas. There will almost certainly be even more sanctions in place. And on top of all that, most of the World will consider Russia to be a pariah state for decades to come. Will this "special military operation" all have been worth it? Well, the Kremlin will have plenty of time to reflect on that....

I'm not at ease with the simplistic idea that higher energy prices = more money for Russia. The pipelines are closed and transporting the products to new markets is now more difficult, complicated, and expensive, and a high Ruble means exports are additionally more expensive. Replacing that from elsewhere will probably mean a small permanent increase in prices, but nothing like the ridiculous levels seen today). There isn't another Europe for Russia to sell to though. @@stream2watch Wow what a loaded statement! So what great culture have any Western nations possessed that is superior to that of Russia's? As far as soft power is concerned the Soviet Union exercised a lot (for better or worse) during the 20th century. With the conflict in Ukraine Russia's soft power has increased because contrary to what the Western media keeps shouting out the majority of the world actually supports Russia not Ukraine. The reason the West is backing Ukraine has absolutely nothing to do with human rights. It is because Ukraine is resource rich and as usual the West wants a piece (or more accurately) all of the pie. It is inflicting a long term war on the unfortunate people of that country when it knows full well that a Western brokered peace plan would bring about a swift end to the war. That however would not be good for the military industrial war machine.

The parallels between the Winter War and the war in Ukraine are numerous: 1)An isolated and paranoid tyrant launches a war against a neighboring sovereign state which used to be part of the Russian Empire. In the hopes of gaining territory and achieving strategic depth of defense. 2)An isolated and paranoid tyrant purges his military leadership to protect his position fostering a cult of personality that only tells him what he wants to hear. 3)An isolated and paranoid tyrant underestimates his opponent's ability to resist and believes he can exploit a 5th column within his opponent's population and be welcomed as liberators. 4)An isolated and paranoid tyrant doesn't recognize his opponent's nationalism and ethnic identity. Instead, he considers them nothing more than a rebellious vassal state and fails to see how nationalism and ethnic identity motivate his opponents. 5)An isolated and paranoid tyrant tries to attack an enemy in winter across terrain that is composed of lakes, rivers, swamps, forests, and favors the defenders. This kind of terrain robs the attacker of strategic mobility and freedom of maneuver and leaves the attacker vulnerable and road-bound. 6)The attacker launches multiple uncoordinated and widely dispersed offensives that can't achieve tactical or strategic superiority in numbers. None of the offensives can provide mutual support which allows the defenders to defeat the attacks in detail. 7)The attacker relies on unencrypted communications which are intercepted by the defender and allows them advanced warning of offensives and their objectives. 8)The attacker neglects the importance of training, maintenance, and logistics for his army. Instead, the attacker relies on weight of numbers and fails to see that poorly trained and equipped conscripts don't perform well against a defender who has better training due to a reservist force structure which gives them more experience. 9)The attacker fails to gain air superiority and resorts to terror bombing of population centers in hopes of demoralizing their opponent when it just hardens their resolve. The terror bombing also shows how tactically inept the attackers are and how they are unable to exploit their numerical and technical advantages. 10)The attacker assumes that his opponent won't receive any worthwhile support from sympathetic allies. Instead, the attacker assumes his threats will scare the allies and fracture their alliances when it only hardens the resolve of both the defenders and their allies to resist the attackers.

The real costs are already enormous and are only the beginning. The Russian army currently occupies about 120,000 km² of land in eastern Ukraine, which certainly requires the permanent presence of 150,000 soldiers to be able to hold these areas militarily. Since it was not possible to break up Ukraine as a state, Crimea, for example, has to be supplied with Russian resources (electricity and gas) at great expense and, above all, the maintenance of the vital water supply from Kherson oblast will constantly cost money and blood. The delusional idea of a complete subjugation of the entire Ukraine was, after all, fed by the realisation that a Crimea without the infrastructure of the Ukrainian mainland is nothing more than a better anchorage. It would only have been an efficient naval base allowing fleet operations in the Mediterranean with a cooperative Ukraine. Something, however, that this war has made impossible. A supposed benefit of the conquered territories will not materialise under war conditions anyway. Destruction and displacement simply prevent any reasonable economic development in the Donbass and in the foothills of Crimea, turning them into emergency areas that will permanently require Russian assistance. The "special military operation" has not only led to a complete military overstretching of the Russian army, which has so far presumably lost the offensive power of 25% of all available "battalion tactical combat groups", but as a direct political consequence now even demands a reorientation of the Russian economy. Regardless of whom these political-economic upheavals will hurt more at the moment, especially in the energy sector, in the medium term the loss of "Europe" is a catastrophe for the Russian Federation that is tantamount to a political self-dissolution. Note: The greatest danger to the existence of an empire has always emanated from the even more ingenious ideas of an emperor.

I have been writing on many channels that it is all about the two huge oil and gas reserves discovered decades ago and Russia knows this and LOVES GAS AND OIL. Two in the eastern Ukraine one in the north east, huge oil and gas and one in the southern eastern section about the Donbas and below and a third in western Ukraine. Putin is after the oil and gas fields, which have been drilled by the four largest oil companies long before the 2014 take over of Crimea. Now Russia wants not only the oil and gas, but also has two huge pipelines no one talks about that feed Europe one pipeline in the north and one in the southern part, but controlled by Russia and Ukraine receives money from Russia via an agreement for two or more decades. This is never talked about. Russia must loose this dreadful aggression and be made to pull out over the next year or two. Seems the west even France and Germany may now be getting serious about sending weapons. America is going to make sure Russia is not capable of attacking other western freedom loving countries and so does at least 40+ western and even Asian nations and even Australia and New Zealand and Japan and South Korea are sending weapons and aid to Ukraine. These countries economies are a 100 times larger that Russia's and over time Russia cannot even with India and others like China buying oil and gas make up for the losses and sanctions over the next several years. The sanctions on Russia are really going bite once they run out if spare parts for their domestic planes, cars, trucks and anything that requires sophisticated microchips. Just imagine what that will do to a country. I'd also contend that any pause in fighting will benefit the Ukrainians. An almost unimaginable amount of weaponry enters the country each day from its western allies. This equipment requires weeks of training for both operation and maintenance. NATO countries spend months training their soldiers to use this stuff. Lastly, these weapons need to be transferred within Ukraine to their eastern front which isn't easy.

Ukraine has a strategy called "defense in depth" - There is nothing wrong with withdrawals, Ukraine is undefeated and has not been routed... They are not "retreating", they have military forces held in reserve, and brigades on the front lines like the 53rd and 54th Mechanized Brigades are being reinforced with entire battalions with new equipment. Oryx today is showing 78 Russian Battalion Tactical Groups of equipment lost in Ukraine, that is 46% of the total active prewar Russian combat power of 170 BTGs, this is a photo verified count and it is extremely conservative because destroyed equipment in Russian occupied areas are not photographed and submitted to Oryx. 1/3rd of the Russian losses are captures.

russia is the grand daddy of defense in depth. ukraine isnt using defense in depth, theyre throwing manpower into their fortified areas in the Donbas bc Zelinsky wants to defend the most fortified areas on earth and not pull back to the sloviansk-kramatorsk line like his general wants to. If the donbas is captured the quality of fortifications, if any, goes down substantially. if by defense in depth, you mean multiple lines of fire, sure, but thats generally not trading that much territory for defense.

There is a three-month wait to join the Ukrainian army, simply because the army does not have enough trainers to process them. That is the essential difference between the combatants, that Putin is scraping the bottom of the barrel to try to fill his ranks, while Ukraine has a virtually unlimited number of eager volunteers, fighting for their county and their freedom.

I'm not sure the assessment really speaks to Russia's massive problems on the strategic and tactical level. On the strategic level NATO is expanding with Findland and Sweden, it has become much more united, arms and capabilities are being moved forward to the east, and the comitment to increase defense spending in the EU, something the US has complained for years, is underway, and countries like Germany are modifying its entire defense stance. The economic sanctions over time will have a massive affect on Russia. The impact cannot be undestated across so many industries that have now lost access to the West's technology, supply lines and capital. In addition, by the end of the year the purchase of oil by the west will drastically fall off. Other countries either don't have the need or the money to replace the massive consumer markets of the west. These sanctions will first cause the Russian GDP to fall 10 to 15% and there is no ability of Russia to recover. On the tactical level over time Ukraine will get stronger and its equipment and training will improve as it transforms from a Soviet era based peacetime military to a NATO oriented wartime military that is fighting for its own territory. The Russians have made a generational enemy of Ukraine; the people willl not forget and likely be very, slow to forgive. As the military gets stronger the probability that Ukraine will be able to push Russia out of its occupying territories increases. Ukraine will obtain air defenses that will further eliminate Russia's ability to project air power into Ukraine except from inside Russian. Second, as advanced Western artillary and rocket systems come to bear in the longer range and extreme accuracy of these weapons will have a profound impact on Russia's ability to fight. Third, Ukraine's use of Western Naval Anti Ship weapons will significantly change the balance of power in the Black Sea especially in combination with improved Air Defense. Fourth, Russia faces serious problems in replacing its military losses due to the lack of parts and electronics many of them under sanctions. It is trying to replace equipment with very old equipment from the Soviet era that is no match against today's hardware. Fifth, Russia has sufferered major casulties (like Ukraine) but unlike Ukraine is not fighting for their own land so that moral becomes and even larger problem not only in fighting units but with relatives back home how will see a massive number of casulties and they will question is this fight worth so many lives. I believe the longer the war goes on the stronger and more determined Ukraine will become while Russia will become weaker and its resolve will falter.

The amount of personnel & equipment lost by Russia is stunning. Reliable estimates from analysts with access to imaging most amateur observers can't get, notwithstanding you-tube & other platform content, indicates Russian losses are approaching unsustainable levels, if not already there. They have lost a minimum of 20,000 troops, but likely closer to 30,000. They've lost 1,000+ tanks, 1,600+ apv/c's of all types, hundreds of fixed & rotary winged aircraft, hundreds of fuel trucks, anti-missile systems, artillery pieces, missile systems (cruise, guided & unguided) & hundreds of other support vehicles. I'm not ex-military, but you can't sustain that rate of loss without becoming combat ineffective eventually. I hope Ukraine can continue their inspiring defence of their homeland.

France you feel, wants to play Russia both ways and Germany seems to be more interested in limiting any damage to its economy that significant cuts in imported russian gas might, in the short term, cause. Germany is the most powerful EU economy and should be stepping up to the plate far more than it is. The EU is hardly any better...what they say and what they do are often totally different things. They and consequently the free world, will live to regret that. It c'ant all be left to the USA, Poland, UK etc.

Somebody has to pay the bill. They, specially DE is among the largest contributors (also the greatest beneficiaries of the EU scheme); and alergy to inflation and economic problems is incorporated into German DNA, since the Weimar hiperinflation debacle. PL is a net receiver, the country that receives the most funds, so it is rather unfair to critizise the country who funds your economy. And people in the "West" culture are not very attracted to anything related to the military. EU Armies struggle to cover their needs. Even the US, struggles to cover its yearly 72000+ new enlisted. The strategy is usually lowering the requirements.
