Russian Defence Forces targeted Ukrainian air bases ahead of United States’ promise to send F-16 fighter jets to aide Zelensky in the war against Putin. Russian drones and missiles targeted Starokostiantyniv air base on 27 June, successfully fended off by Ukrainian air defence. On July 2, Russia attacked Myrhorod Airfield in Poltava region and destroyed five Ukrainian Su-27 Jets. Several Ukrainian air fields were targeted by Russian fighter jets to damage the infrastructure and storage facilities.

The Soviet must be aware of where the Ukraine air strips are. That is why NATO is talking about having planes stationed in other countries. I think Russia has said they will target the planes anyway. The F16s probably won't be maintained and/or flown by Ukraines.

Mirgorod region is where a great Russian writer Nikolai Gogol was born. In his time it was a part of the Russian Empire. His works include a collection of short stories named "Mirgorod" (Taras Bulba, Viy...). The most famous of his works is the masterpiece "Dead Souls". Today it is a battlefield. Unfortunately.

So the airports themself are ( easy ) targets. But what about the planes themselves ? Are they able to withstand the Russian AA systems ? Me thinks not. The F16 stand 0 chance, they won't even last for 2 months in the Western part of Ukraine, let along if they fly these planes on the active front line. The wear and tear on these planes alone in an active combat zone is enough to turn them to scrap within 2 weeks of flying. This is so pointless. The only role they can play is for propaganda and morale purposes in the western part of Ukraine. Letting these obsolete planes fly into a Russian combat zone makes no sense at all, all their AA systems are practically developed to counter the F16, for decades !

Where are the Ukranians going to base their F16's if all the airfields in Ukraine are not usable? By the way where are they? They were supposed to have been delivered months ago. I think the main reason for the delay is that NATO does not know where to base them. If based in Ukraine they will be most likely targeted and destroyed. If they have them in Romania I see a problem. NATO Fighter jets based in Romania flown by NATO pilots attacking Russia troops? How can this be interpreted as anything else but a direct attack on Russia by NATO? Probably Russia would retaliate by attacking the airbases. Would this cause Romania to invoke NATO article five? I would say yes. Most likely this would eventually result in a nuclear exchange. Therefore I don't think NATO has the guts to do this. Although judging by how imcompetant the Western leaders are, they may just go ahead anyway. Probably we will see what happens in a few weeks.

The problem is that it can cause harm to the troops even if shot down and the Rus will have to respond. If there are no airfields then they will try to use Poland airfield's , making Poland an active meember if the war. The intent is to avoid lame excuses from the west saying it was a "donated" jet, if it lifts off from a carrier or country outside ukraine and hit the RF is a declaration of war.
