Russia is now a war driven economie, most of thoses high salary are given for contributing to the war effort at the depend of regular business that know struggle to survive, it's not a sustanaible strategy, And yes the sanctions are working not as well as the west hoped but they work, Russia is dependent on the west for a lot of technical aspect like maintainance of gaz complex, now thoses foreign igenieurs and supplyers are gone, gazporn has annonced it's first lost in decades, you can't just reorganize an economie in a matter of years it takes decades.

The real question is why Russia hasn't ALWAYS been a high income country? It has by far more natural resources than any other country, yet this does not translate into prosperity for much of the nation. In 2000, the average Russian worker had twice the income of the average Chinse worker. Today they are almost the same. What is China, with few natural resources, doing right that Russia, with enormous natural resources, is doing wrong?

Hence, why South Korea, Singapore and Japan have absolutely no natural resources and yet are as rich as they are today. If Natural resources alone generated wealth then Africa and Latin America would be the richest regions in the world. Also China too is flooded with natural resources. The problem is they consume more than anyone else in the world and therefore need to import to meet all their needs. It is because China has so many natural resources that Imperial Japan wanted to conquer China during WWII to feed its industries. All of the Western manufacturers moved to China because China had a massive amount of cheap high skilled labor and the industrial and logistical infrastructure to fuel and back that labor. Russia did not have the population to compete with China. Furthermore, as you said Chinese labor was 1/2 of that of Russia. Hence why Western manufacturers went to China instead of Russia. When Vladimir Putin came to power Russia was deep into debt, the country was on its knees. Not only did Putin pay Russia's entire national debt he built a reserve of $600 Billion. Russia's GDP per capital is 3x than it was when Putin came to power.

Europe used to buy Russian resources because they were close to Russia, but if you look at the facts, you'll see that the USA and Canada are two of the largest producers of oil and Gas. Australia has the largest reserves of Uranium and is the largest exporter of natural gas as well as being the only country outside of China able to produce rare earth minerals. Australia also has the largest deposits of lithium and iron ore. China can't do without Australian iron ore and natural gas. Australia also has 1000 years of coal at its disposal, which it also sells to China. Australia has China by the balls, and Russia can't compete with that.

The matter of fact is usa, europe still buying Russian resources directly or indirectly through India or China, or using 3rd party countries, ordering for one country and re transiting it to themselves, or moving oil from shadow fleet to to another oil tanker. They have lots of actual wealth in the form of oil, resources, arms, engineering, etc. It's superior to paper wealth that the US has too much of. Also, sanctions aren't a physical blockade of trade and the US cannot stop Russia trading with other countries in Asia at all.

The west did helped Russia by putting those sanctions. Russia was and is the richest country on earth in terms of natural resources. However it was the oligarch who were controlling most wealth and they were the ones who were enriching the west by transferring money out of Russia. Following sanctions most were either killed or committed suicide after having their wealth snatched. The remaining oligarchs have lost trust in the west and are now investing inside Russia. Putin is very grateful to the west for this unvoluntary help

If USA could not allow Cuba to have missiles in thier backyard, why do they think Russia would entertain threats from Ukraine. And why would Russia allow US to put nuclear weapons in Ukraine right next to it's door steps. (Which they will do eventually) Mark my words in the next few years Russia will be the 3rd or the 4th largest economy in the world, they'll beat all Western sanctions. Their Weapons exports will increase because of western interventionism across the world. China will also become the world's largest economy by 2030-32.

While the owners of the USA has been committing more than 1 war annually in the past 75 years, Russia rebuilt it's infra structure after WW2 same as every European country had to, much of it done on voluntary bases, by the army and civilian's sacrificing even their lives(my mothers cousin died in a work related accident) Russia was rebuilding the economy, weapons needed for self defence! So they were ready for the coming attack, albeit by proxies as the Wests MO is, after former Soviet Union separated into independent states, the CIA was in different states working on a coup, government change, drawing Russia into a war! 2002 Ukraine, Georgia, then recently Dagestan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and a few more! This is what planning ahead by a patriotic government who cares for it's nation looks like, just like in China! They are working for future generation's improved living standard, unlike the West, they exploit the lower and middle class taxpayers while their owners the 1% never contributes but only takes, any wonder the US has the highest number homeless in the world or those living in squalor same as they turned Philippines and South Korea into?

Unsanctioned Russia wouldn't have had this progress.. One main factor helping them is that all their oligarchs have been forced by sanctions to keep there money in the economy, which now making the money circulate to everyone unlike initially where dey syphoned the money to keep in western banks and buy exotic stuffs in the west there by emptying the Russian economy...

Russia is the biggest country on the planet, with 140 million people. I remember that some politician said that Russia is the only fully self-sufficient country on the planet. They literally have every single resource that they might need. Does that mean that Russia is fully resilient to sanctions? Of course not. These sanctions are damaging Russia temporarily. Whatsoever, while it will damage them short term, long term, it will make them completely independent of the west, which is where they will become absolutely resilient. Irony is, Russia has been lazy, and they haven't been producing nearly anything, because everything was imported from the west. Now, they have to start producing too, which in a long term, is what they should have always done.
