In Olga's 1913 diary, she mentions her mother's health every day. It must've been mentally exhausting for the children to grow up in this situation

Especially knowing how little of importance they were. Those poor girls barely had their own identities. They were called the Big Pair and the Little Pair. Also OTMA like they were one.

I love this doc, I first watched it when started my romanov obsession. I feel Alixs greats disadvantage was that, standardly she would have been raised with the expectation of marrying Nicolas if she were to marry him at all. She would've been taught French and Russian as she learned English and would've been fluent by her teens. She would've attended smaller or less important court events as she got closer to adulthood. She would have been taken under the wing of someone, even possibly the Dowager Empress if she was lucky enough, and would have been led in the expected duties of the Tsarina of Russia. But she was in a time when Royalty were allowed love matches and where it was becoming less and less common to get engaged at 5 and marry at 17. So, she didn't have any of that. And on top of it Nicolas was immature and playful so he didn't really teach her much on her expectations in court. Then even more weighing on her was that the Dowager Empress and Her grandmama Queen Victoria looked down upon the union so she didn't get much help of guidance and the stuff she got from Victoria wasn't exactly fit for the Russian court. Pretty much all the odds were stacked against her. It's sad because I feel if they had been born a century later, they would've done fine. They would be viewed as a cute and charming family much in the way Princess Diana and her little family were. But instead they were born in late 19th century Eurasia where there was strife and change and hunger and still all these imperialistic rules that they just didn't know how to cope or fix. So she shrunk and hid away and put her faith in mystics instead of rising to the challenge. And that ultimately played a big role in her family's downfall.

Love this documentary, particularly for the soundtrack. Thanks so much :) - although you seemed to have added music in random places... very strange

@@KawaiiStars I wish removing the music entirely and using the voice over would be sufficient enough for YT to leave it alone. I also don't understand why people report it for music, isn't people hearing the music just free advertising for music that would likely otherwise go unheard ?

It's actually quite remarkable to see how public perception of the Romanovs has done such a complete 180 in Russia in recent decades. I recall seeing a procession march in Yekaterinburg back in 2018 on the centennial of the execution, and what stood out to me the most was a priest proclaiming the family as "innocent people who violated no laws". That message in itself speaks volumes about the massive social change in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union

53:51 The officer was Nikolai Pavlovich Sablin, almost twice her age. He was a close friend of the family but abandoned them during the revolution

I can't help but notice the similarities between Alexandra, and Marie Antoinette. They both were executed brutally. They both lost their children were murdered brutally, and they both were extremely unpopular foreigners.
@Garbeaux.

Definitely parallels but major difference is one deserved her fate while the other did not. The kids in both situations didn’t deserve what happened to them.

There is definitely parallels. Also a group of women stormed the Palace of Marie Antoinette and a group of women tried to do the same to Alexandra.

if they had looked outside their palace to talk to their people and really see their lives, Nicholas & Alexandra might have seen their misery. They failed to see the coming storm of revolution and their demise with their family and country.

it's there so the video isn't struck with a copyright strike and taken down, there was another upload of the documentary just as normal but it was taken down by a strike last year I think. I do agree tho it is a little distracting when the music doesn't match the tone of what the narrator is saying.

It's a great documentary, no doubt, but can someone tell me why the Lady, who reads out Alexandras letters puts on a russian accent? Alexandra was raised by Queen Victoria, why would she have a russian accent?

I love these videos! Please do more of this beautiful family. These girls are ethereally lovely and they should have been much more widely seen and known by the Russian people. The most beautiful of all royal princesses in my view.

So hard to say what you would do in any situation but I would like to think that if I was a princess I would want to strive to be like Diana very kind, giving, warm and loving I wouldn’t want to put all my effort into my family and my country❤ I feel like especially back in the day royalty was almost set up for failure they had so much pressure so young.

While Alexandra was not a big catch, neither was the “princess” from the deposed Bourbon Dynasty that both Alexander III & his wife preferred. I bet that woman was relieved pretty soon after Nicholas married Alexandra when things got very precarious in Russia.

Great, to watch, and share, more of this, with you, guys! Fabulous, fabulous! I am more, and more, disappointed, in the, State, of, the, United States, and, European Monarchies. Also, with, all of the, Prior, U.S., Owned Lands. You are, still not taking, Monarchy, seriously, even though you have, Graces. Fact. Period. It is so loudly, evident. -Brittney Lee Hill Collier, Friday, Febuary, 16th, 2024. 4:56 p.m.
