The Kyiv Independent’s Anna Belokur explains the top stories of the week, from the resignation of Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to the "stalled" Russian advance near Pokrovsk. Also featured is Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to Mongolia, a country that was ostensibly obligated to arrest him under the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute; instead, Putin was met with a red carpet and new cooperation agreements.

There are many reasons why Mongolia didn’t arrest Putin or go along with sanctions or other things. The problem is Russia, Putin, who ignores the principles of the rule of law in everything he does. Putin does all of this on purpose. No one knows what that porpose is beyond power. It’s not money, he is essentially the richest man on earth, probably our first trillionare. He doesn’t care about imaginary nazis in Kyiv. He doesn’t care about the historical significance of Kyiv any more than his posturing as a devote Orthodox Christian. He is the forever victim, everyone is unfair to him and his small people. He certainly doesn’t care about the Russian people and the Ukrainian people are only targets, all of them, young and old. The conflict that Putin caused when he invaded Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, and his helping out in Syria and many African countries concerns us all. If not what Putin might do directly but also what others are emboldened to do. I am sure Putin was secure in his mind with his visit to Mongolia. I am also sure that Mongolia know that any agreements they signed are not worth the paper it was written on. Putin lies, cheats, steals, kills, rapes, tortures, extorts and a laundry list of other unpleasant pastimes. When are we going to say enough and put an end to it?

Russia is widening their advances direction Pokrovsk to protect their flanks. That is normal military doctrine. By doing this they are able to create cauldron after cauldron that forces Ukrainians to fall back. That may seem to slowdown their advance but in reality is laying a fundation for taking succesfully Pokrovsk.

Russian forces capture Nevelske in Donetsk Oblast - DeepState. Additionally, analysts noted that Russian forces have advanced in Krasnohorivka in Donetsk Oblast. According to DeepState, fighting is also ongoing north of the town of Hirnyk. DeepState reported that the Russian invasion forces had advanced in the area of Toretsk and near Vuhledar, which they are attempting to bypass from the flanks. Outgunned and outnumbered, Ukraine’s military is struggling with low morale and desertion: Dima spent years on the Ukrainian front lines. As a battalion commander, Dima was in charge of around 800 men who fought in some of the fiercest, bloodiest battles of the war - most recently near Pokrovsk, the strategic eastern town that is now on the brink of falling to Russia. But with most of his troops now dead or severely injured, Dima decided he’d had enough. He quit and took another job with the military - in an office in Kyiv. Standing outside that office, chain smoking and drinking sweet coffee, he told the news outlet he just couldn’t handle watching his men die anymore. Two and half years of Russia’s grinding offensive have decimated many Ukrainian units. Reinforcements are few and far between, leaving some soldiers exhausted and demoralized. The situation is particularly dire among infantry units near Pokrovsk and elsewhere on the eastern front line, where Ukraine is struggling to stop Russia’s creeping advances. CNN spoke to six commanders and officers who are or were until recently fighting or supervising units in the area. All six said desertion and insubordination are becoming a widespread problem, especially among newly recruited soldiers. Four of the six, including Dima, have asked for their names to be changed or withheld due to the sensitive nature of the topic and because they are not authorized to speak to the media. “Not all mobilized soldiers are leaving their positions, but the majority are. When new guys come here, they see how difficult it is. They see a lot of enemy drones, artillery and mortars,” one unit commander currently fighting in Pokrovsk told CNN. He also asked to remain anonymous. “They go to the positions once and if they survive, they never return. They either leave their positions, refuse to go into battle, or try to find a way to leave the army,” he added. Unlike those who volunteered earlier in the war, many of the new recruits didn’t have a choice in entering the conflict. They were called up after Ukraine’s new mobilization law came into force in the spring and can’t leave legally until after the government introduces demobilization, unless they get special permission to do so. Yet the discipline problems clearly began way before this. Ukraine went through an extremely difficult patch during last winter and spring. Months of delay in getting US military assistance into the country led to a critical ammunition shortage and a major slump in morale. As the battlefield situation deteriorated, an increasing number of troops started to give up. In just the first four months of 2024, prosecutors launched criminal proceedings against almost 19,000 soldiers who either abandoned their posts or deserted, according to the Ukrainian parliament. More than a million Ukrainians serve in the country’s defense and security forces, although this number includes everyone, including people working in offices far away from the front lines. It’s a staggering and - most likely - incomplete number. Several commanders told CNN that many officers would not report desertion and unauthorized absences, hoping instead to convince troops to return voluntarily, without facing punishment. This approach became so common that Ukraine changed the law to decriminalize desertion and absence without leave, if committed for the first time. Horetskyi told CNN that this move made sense. “Threats will only make things worse. A smart commander will delay threats, or even avoid them,” he said. Pokrovsk has become the epicenter of the fight for Ukraine’s east. Russian forces have been inching towards the city for months, but their advances have sped up in recent weeks as Ukrainian defenses begin to crumble. Pokrovsk has become the epicenter of the fight for Ukraine’s east. Russian forces have been inching towards the city for months, but their advances have sped up in recent weeks as Ukrainian defenses begin to crumble. Ukrainian soldiers in the area paint a grim picture of the situation. Kyiv’s forces are clearly outnumbered and outgunned, with some commanders estimating there are 10 Russian soldiers to each Ukrainian. But they also appear to be struggling with problems of their own making. An officer from a brigade fighting in Pokrovsk, who asked for their name to be withheld for security reasons, told CNN that poor communication between different units is a major issue there. One battalion commander in northern Donetsk said his flank was recently left exposed to Russian attacks after soldiers from neighboring units abandoned their positions without reporting it.

The usual drivel from the Putin Bot who has been told to post this rubbish where ever he can. The reality is this is a stalemate and has been for 2 years and Bahkmut, Robotyne, Ardviika, Kursk are all hyped up but represent so little land that none of them were significant. Soon we can add Pokrovsk as another hyped up town that also proves to be insignificant. Just Zoom out from the frontline and look at it as a whole and it has not changed in 2 years and it won't this year.

@@kadovax6567 The Russian advance continues without any serious delays. The SMO slowly inches forward towards its goal of a complete “liberation” of the Donbas. RBC Ukraine - Why Russians managed to advance in Pokrovsk direction: For a year and a half, the situation on this section of the front remained unchanged until the Russian forces intensified near Avdeevka last fall. In February, this city fell under Russian control, and within weeks, Ukrainian defenses on the Avdeevka-Pokrovsk direction began to crack. In two months, the Russian forces advanced more than twenty kilometers deep, capturing Ocheretyne. In the summer, the Russian incursion began to expand, and during August, settlements in this direction were lost almost daily. In August, the Russians captured about 355 square kilometers, most of them in the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions. This is perhaps the fastest Russian forces advance since 2022. Recently, Russian units managed to capture the important defensive cities of Novogrodivka and Karlivka in just a few days. Before the SMO, each of these cities had over 14,000 residents. The fortifications built by the Ukrainian military - trench networks, anti-tank obstacles, and strongpoints - could not stop the Russian advance. A soldier involved in the fighting in the Pokrovsk direction cited two key factors in an interview that played in Russia's favor and contributed to their advance. The first is the moral and physical fatigue of the soldiers, particularly the infantry. The second is coordination issues among the troops and, at times, incompetent decisions by senior officers at the operational-tactical level. The situation in the Pokrovsk direction has been changing for over a week now. Several soldiers interviewed a week ago claimed that the Russian General Staff allegedly had orders to capture Pokrovsk by October 1. In their opinion, this goal does not seem realistic, but battles for this city could begin by the end of September in a pessimistic scenario or in November in an optimistic one. "Pokrovsk is now being heavily shelled with artillery, just as it was before the Russian offensive on Avdeevka and Bakhmut. Back then, it was the fortress of Bakhmut, and now we have the fortress of Pokrovsk. And the Russians have not given up on the idea of capturing this city at any cost," a source told RBC-Ukraine.
