With the stock market someone is winning unfairly as the media swings both directions. They buy lots of cheap stock, THEN the media starts talking about how amazing this stock will run. Retail investors start buying and the price goes up. Then the investors short the stock. They start selling the shares they bought for cheap to retail investors, and THEN the media starts talking about how the stock is falling. The price falls through the floor as retail investors scramble to get out without too much loss. Then, the institutions cash in their shorts. The investors make money both on the way up and the way down, basically money they have taken from the retail investors. And they pay a snippet to the media for their help. War media is the same, except the oligarchs making the money off the citizens suffering and government spending are the weapons and fuel companies. (Also investors in weapons and fuel companies swinging media about the share prices based on war news both directions just like any stock) The oligarchs love war and civil conflict as it creates 2 ways they can cheat money out of the citizens as news swings good or bad for each population.

This is the worst possible scenario for Russia, as their top-down command structure doesn't deal well with rapid changes. If done right the Ukrainians will inflict stupid high losses on the Russians, while they constantly chase ghosts.
