Russia slammed the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games as a "massive failure," with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova detailing numerous shortcomings. The ceremony was not broadcast live on Russian television, and Zakharova expressed disbelief at the event's quality, comparing it to a deep fake or photoshop. Only a few Russian athletes were approved to participate as "neutrals," with the ban on competitors under the Russian flag due to Russia's war in Ukraine. Zakharova criticized the open-air ceremony for forcing guests to sit in the pouring rain and mocked the organizers for not taking measures like cloud seeding. She highlighted the arrest of a Russian man accused of a "destabilization" plot and questioned the presence of spies. Additional criticisms included transport issues due to arson attacks, the transformation of central Paris into a homeless ghetto, and a rat infestation. Zakharova also ridiculed the choice of Snoop Dogg to carry the Olympic torch and pointed out errors like introducing the South Korean team as North Korean and raising the Olympic flag upside-down.
