The Russian Orthodox Church canonised the Tsar Nicholas II and his family at a special service on Sunday.
The last Russian tsar and his family were shot dead by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
The Archbishops' Council, the Church's highest ruling body, voted to canonise Nicholas II, his wife and five children, because they bore their suffering with gentleness, patience and humility.
The Council also voted to canonise many priests and monks who were put to death during the Soviet era.
Tsar Nicholas II becomes the fourth Russian monarch ever to be made a saint.
For many Orthodox believers, he already is one and a series of miracles have been reported at the place where he and his family died.
But others in the Church have their doubts, accusing the tsar of being stubborn and weak, of clinging to power and of having a mistress.
And some Church leaders agree with the Soviet line - that the tsar and his family epitomised the excesses of the imperial era.

I will always honour Nicholas for the gentleman which he was. Why did the church not help him when he needed them? I will never understand this awful situation

Because a lot of them feared Lenin and his Bolshevik thugs. Only one priest spoke out in Nicholas' defense.

@@aabe929 Was the revolution directed against the rule of George V, king of England ? With his absolut power, Tsar with the imperial family, was responsible for everything what was happening in Russia. Without his and his predecessors bad decision we wouldn't have revolution, Bolshevik wouldn't came to power and the lives of million of Russian people would be saved. This is not that complicated. many historians believe it was the Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin that ordered his soldiers to murder the Imperial family. The fact that the man that killed the family (Yurovski) traveled to Lenin's headquarters in Moscow to deliver his report on how he killed the family, and then buried the bodies. Lenin and the other Bolshevik leaders got to read the report two days after the murder was done in Jekaterinburg. And also, Trotzky wrote in his memoir while he was living in Mexico that it was Sverdlov and Lenin that decided to order the murder of the Imperial family, because the White army had gotten close enough to rescue the Imperial family. The Imperial family could've been an important symbol of hope for the monarchists in the White army, if they were able to rescue the family. Lenin wanted to make sure that the White army would'nt have a live royal banner to rally around. The White army was fighting against the Bolsheviks in the Russian civil war. Lenin was an ice - cold psycho commie leader, so it would'nt suprise me one bit if ordered the murder of the Imperial family. Altough it'll never be comfirmed or denied of Lenin ordered the murder or not.

The Bolshevik leadership made sure there was no direct evidence tying them to the crime, and it worked seemingly: 100 years later and Soviet boomers are still in denial that Lenin is responsible
