Not gonna lie, the Russian military really impressed me lately. They're executing the good old massed assault doctrine really really well, coupled with effective maskirova everywhere. Using Kharkiv as decoy to take Ocheretyne, using New York-Toretsk to take Prohres and Sokil, forcing Ukraine to defend Konstantiniyvka instead of Pokrovsk, and now the recent offensive in Southern Donetsk which connects well with the Pokrovsk operation.

It takes time to fortify recently captured territory, defend the flanks, and move troops and equipment-especially heavy artillery-safely.

The Russian PAUSE is a brilliant tactic by not revealing their plan away and kept Ukrainian guessing of what the hell the Russian are up to.

It seems to me that the Russians juggle the battlefield quite well. The Ukrainians brought (brought back from Kursk) reinforcements and began to defend Pokrovsk (which is actually already losing its importance because it can hardly be the main logistical hub while it is being bombed). The Russians (so it seems to me) instead of attacking Pokrovsk, stopped there and attacked in places such as the river Oskol (Pivnichne) in the north-west near Kupjansk and Siversk (Verhinekamiansk), then south of Pokrovsk near Kurakhovo (command center for that area) and further south-west near Vuhledar. Sun Tzo said “If he sends reinforcements everywhere, he will everywhere be weak.” The Ukrainians have concentrated near Pokrovsk, and the Russians are striking in other places and beating lightly near Pokrovsk, so that the Ukrainians don't think to move to other places.

Its not just moving the HQ to a new position, you have to move everything from Artillery, supply depots, fuel, establishing new save supply routes, refit the combat forces and also give them a short break, refit the equiptment and above all making new plans for the next assaults. There is so much logistics involved and organisation, im really surprised that the operational pause was so short.

The front line without Kursk is about 1000 Km and is manned by 300,000 Ukrainians - rough figures. Kursk incursion front line is now about 100 Km long and manned by 30,000 Ukrainians. These are similar proportions of men per Km. Maybe Ukraine cannot expand further into Russia without their lines becoming too thinly manned and making them precarious.

Zhelanne looked to me like a good spot to unload Railcars for Avdivka last Spring (or was it the one before) as the NATO supplies arrived to shoot at Donets'k. I mean after the Russians cut off rail service to Avdivka. Now the Russians could start using that position to support their Offense. The City has sidings and some Feed Sheds to store food and Clothing in. The warehousing of Ammo always ends up in a big noise, so it never is supposed to stay in one place long. But with the soft roads of spring the delivery of Ammo needs to be pretty close to the Front lines for Trucks to deliver. Russian Officers do need to keep in mind the range of Artillery.

When you're doing an offensive you have to let the rear troops take care or the wounded. This requires trust in command that there will be rear troops coming in a timely manner, and trust in the importance of the mission. Im not sure if either of these are active amongst the soldiers in the Kursk offensive.

A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas. If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy. Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements. Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time. Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns. 20th September, 2021: Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO. NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter).
