Russian ‘floating bomb’ filled with explosive cargo is stuck off the coast of Kent | LBC

A damaged Russian-operated ship carrying 20,000 tonnes of explosive cargo is floating close to the Kent coast.
Alarmingly, the boat - reported to have sustained damage to both its rudder and hull - is carrying seven times the amount of ammonium nitrate that caused the catastrophic explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, in 2020.
The damaged cargo ship which Maltese-flagged, loaded with the highly explosive ammonium nitrate, has "anchored" off the Kent coast, it is reportedly seeking a port in which to dock to undergo repairs.
Of further concern is the ship's current proximity to the World War II wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery, which contains approximately 1,400 tonnes of unexploded ordnance.

The ship is NOT in Kent, it is in the ocean miles from the UK in international waters. The only legal means the Brits have to stop them is if the ship meanders too close to offshore oil rigs and therefore endanger them. It maybe the goal of Russia to destroy part of the oil industry, but the more likely effort is to scare the British people into acquiescing to Russian demands to stop help Ukraine. If that is their goal it highlights just how out of touch Putin is with history as there is nothing in the British character that suggests they will submit to Putin! To be sure, there are now as there has always been those willing to accept the demands of a belligerent, you know, like Neville Chamberlin, but the British people are not so easily boxed into a corner! This scare tactic by Russia WILL backfire and WILL result in the Brits upping their support to Ukraine. Russia's actions continue to demonstrate their complete ignorance of reality and history! The Brits will NOT be cowed!

Seriously. We are shipping ammonia nitrate all over the world, constantly. It takes EXTREMELY special circumstances to make it go off.

No kidding this is a big nothing: ships have to make emergency stops all the time, all countries have ships carrying dangerous stuff. Hate russia for valid reasons not because of hype men taking advantage of people’s ignorance of how modern international shipping works.

tosh - it's very unlikely to be able to create a shock wave enough to be able to set anything off over a mile away absolute max, and there is no evidence whatsoever that any of the cargo of the Montgomery is still viable - it may be, but equally it may not be. Most likely a small percentage of it is. Even if it blew up at brand new maximum potential it would do no harm to anything other than passing shipping, out there in the mud. Either way, there are far more efficient and effective ways to cause mischief.

So, 20,000 Tonnes of Fertiliser is about equivalent to 5000tonnes of TNT, of a 5 Kilotonne explosion. The Light blast damage radius (enough blast pressure to break windows) for such an explosion would be 12.7Km. Currently, according to Marine radar, MV Ruby is anchored 27.4Km off the coast of Kent. SS Richard Montogomery is around 55Km West of the MV Ruby's location. I think we are relatively safe.... I wonder what is going on with pushing out this kind of story into the media?

At 1:48 : 'back into the Baltic to Russia'. It did not sail through the Baltic, it travelled from the White Sea, passed Murmansk to the Atlantic Ocean and South into the North Sea. At 2:15 : 'it is only a few miles away from the SS Montgomery' Actually, the distance is 35 nautical miles, that is not 'a few miles'.
