At last! For a long time, I have felt that the Russian guitar and Rob MacKillop were meant for each other. I will eagerly look forward to every episode! (And thanks for mentioning my name in the video😀).
The Spanish can be very morose when they want to be, but perhaps Russians and Scots even more so! It's a competition to see who is the saddest nation of all :-)
Thank you, Rob :-) Russian 7-string guitar music is very interesting. Doff guitars are cheap and good, they make solid wood guitars and other instruments. I have one their jumbo and balalaika :-)
I was always curious about the Russian 7 sting guitar, and lo and behold, Rob provides an excellent video about this instrument. Looking forward to hearing more if this repertoire.
Heranca Russa. If you haven’t seen it, you must. Produced by Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa. If you haven’t heard him, you must. Good to see you again.I lost touch after our little RU-vid village was overrun by gmail wielding monetizers. We exchanged pleasantries just before the village was ransacked. We were in agreement over our shared propensity to play “Pig meat is all I crave” ,followed by “Queen Elizabeth’s Galliard”.( or something similar) “A good tune, is still a good tune”. Russian guitars influenced Brazilian 7 string guitars (although, not the tuning). You have to check out this video. I think I am probably “preaching to the choir”, but on the off chance that you may have not seen this documentary, I thought I would bring it to your attention.😎
It's as beautiful as always and your voice is so gentle and relaxing , I fell in love with it 💕💕💕 Also , thank you for uploading the videos !! Hope you'll have a nice day !!
Hi Rob! It's "thanksgiving day" here in the states. Wanted to say thank you for all your video post! Always enjoy the music you play and the history with the music you give. Take care! Peace, and cheers from Austin Texas
Doff RGV買いました!早速ウラルのぐみの木を練習してます I bought one! Recently I have practiced Russian song "Ural rowan tree" with my guitar. Я покупал Doff RGV! На моей семиструнке я упражняюсь на песню "Уральская рябинушка."
The excellent performance of the Morkov. Русская песня "Наяву и в сладком сне" (Russian Song"Waking and sleeping sweetly"). I bought a week ago D'off RGS, it is slightly more expensive than the RGV but louder, thanks to the larger body. The Russian guitar originated from the zither, not the Spanish guitar. The great misconception of modern Russian guitarists, including Timofeev, that the strings were gut, not steel. Most Russian guitarists play nylon strings on guitars of Spanish construction, that is, Spanish guitars with a seventh string. Such in Russia 99%, especially professionals. This is fundamentally wrong. It turns out Tarrega with Albeniz. The last Russian guitarist who played on metal in Russia was Yuriev and Sazonov and Sorokin.Look at you-tube. Rob Maccilloy an authority on early music and it uses steel strings! A lot of guitar scores music here, I have too scanned a lot of there old music. Dmitry Petrachkov's Website Thanks www.sevenstring.ru/
@@lawcch I'm probably one of the last owners of RGS taken out of production, no orders RGS is better than RGV dominantamusic.ru/product/doff-rgs-klassicheskaya-gitara/
Rob... I see you finally got one ;) We talked about some "baroque" banjo about 4 years ago if I remember correctly and at that time I mentioned to you that we had a 7-string workshop here in St-Petersburg and I offered you to get one for you. At that time however you replied just "No thanks, I don't need one but It's good they can offer them at that bargain price". Anyway, it's good you got one and I hope you enjoy it.
Hi Vinnie. I enjoyed it for a while, but realised it was such a huge subject that i didn't have time for. So I still have a 7-string guitar, but gave no time to play it. When I die I will bring it with me into my next life! Get an early start :-)
Probably useless bit of info, the 19th century Portuguese guitar was also tuned in an open chord, C E G C E G. There are even methods with that, but if fell out of use. In the beggining of the 20'th century, the instrument was adopted by the Fado style, which was originally mandolin music, so they came up with the tuning D A B E A B, an expanded fifths tuning (DAEB), so they could keep the mandolin repertoire. That's the current use. All this to say, I never knew how the old tuning could work, and just assumed it was theoretical nonsense, but this russian guitar music does prove it works, so thanks for the knowledge!
And the first book of music ever published in CEGceg tuning was in Edinburgh, where I live. I know all about this. Check out my site scottishguittar.com/ for more info. But the connection with Russia comes from Prague, when a Czech musician moved to Russia using this tuning. If you are really curious about this, read the doctoral thesis by Oleg Timofeyev here: dissexpress.proquest.com/dxweb/results.html?QryTxt=&By=Oleg+Timofeyev&Title=&pubnum=
@@RobMacKillop1 Thank you sir. Not sure if I'd commit to the tuning, since I'm getting into another one! The da'Gamba/lute tuning, trying to get into that renaissance :) But it's always fun to read the History. The russian samples I'm picking up in the comments sound exactly like what our players are still doing, the style probably goes way, way back!
Funny thing, I'm interested in russian guitar for a couple of years now, but never really went in depth. Today, I thought of it again, searched on RU-vid for some video, and... What a nice coincidence ! Always loved your videos ^^. Also, isn't Doff making a nylon version of it ? I think they do, but I'm not sure.
I am considering buying one (or Doff RGC). What kind of nylon strings have you put on it? Are they ones with ball-end or plain strings? (I have found both of the strings and the guitar itself on ebay.)
Yes, I've used similar banjo pegs, but didn't like them either! I'm fussy about tuners. But for the price of this guitar, I have no right to expect better.
Having known about Robs' talents and Russian guitar it's a pleasant surprise to find they have found each other.Looking forward to the results.I also have a D'off 7($220 door to door-St Petersburg to Portland OR) and have been feeling my way around.I've been informed that Scottish/Irish music can be played in this tuning but find it hard to get my head around-can it be done? Rob.what do you think ?
@@maxcuthbert100 The one in the video? Something like "In waking hours and in sweet dream". The story is how he dreams about her day and night, but all in vain..
Hello, if I understood right, you are playing here with the out-of-the box nylon strings by Doff? Or with the Italian ones? Thanks and keep continue uploading this great videos.
The Italian ones, Aquila Corde - the best currently available. Doff are sending me another for review, created for classical strings. Not sure when I'll get it, though. I'll definitely make a video of it.
@@RobMacKillop1 Did you play with the Doff nylon strings before you replaced them with the Aquila Corde strings? And if yes, do the Doff nylon strings sound (much) different than the Italian ones, or is it just a difference in quality and material? p.s: Im an absolute beginner, so I dont know much yet. Hope you can help. Thanks alot!
@@RobMacKillop1 Is there any descent 7-string guitar on the market that you can recommend which sounds out-of the box like ur guitar here with the Italian strings? For me as a beginner, it would be too expensive to buy the Doff guitar and then send it to Aquila to Italy. Thanks.
You don't need to send the guitar to Italy. Just order the strings from the Aquila-Corde website. There is a link on my website SarenkoAndCo.com But if you are a beginner, just start with the strings the Doff comes with. They are good to start with, and you can change them later.
Very Nice! So if i understand correct the guitar you play is a RGV? And the v stand for vintage? Why was it designed for steel strings, should it not been for gut/nylon? But om the other hand if i can set it up with aquila strings thats ok! I Think i Will give this a try! Once again Nice playing.
Yes, an RGV. I don't know what the letters stand for. Yes, it was made for steel strings, but at my request they set it up for nylon. Since then I found tat they already have other nylon models - see their website. I swapped the nylon for nylgut. Despite being for steel, it sounds nice with nylgut. They said that after my review they would send me a real nylon-designed model for free, but they never did.
Hi Rob, wow how come the figuring/flame on the back/side woods on your guitar look so amazing? From what I've seen from stock pictures online, looks very plain and mediocre- doesn't look anywhere near as amazing as yours.
They are well made for the price. Yes, seven strings into a 50mm nut is tight, but Russian guitars of the 19th century had nuts of 46mm. But you adapt.
@@RobMacKillop1 Do you have any experience with guitars made by the brand 'Cordoba' I'm looking to buy my first personal guitar and I am in love with fingerpicking techniques especially flamenco styles. I also love celtic music. I think string spacing might be pretty dang important for flamenco and fingerpicking. I know this is kind of a rough question but Taylor has 12Fret models with a halfway decent nut size of 44mm (6 steel strings) Im so torn between the two (Cordoba chinese made nylon with nice string spacing or Consistent quality Taylor guitar with steel strings and less space (but i can also play modern genres on)) Can anyone offer any insight?
@@zachary1657 I think unless you're paying a lot of money,Cordoba is the safer bet. High end Taylors?Very good.Inexpensive Cordoba or Yamaha? Wonderful bang for your buck .
Of course. Matanya Ophee put out some editions for 6-strings in EADGBE TUNING, but he later regretted it. You cannot replicate the sound of that Open G Major chord in your arrangements. You might be able to get the notes, but the sound will be very different. There’s a reason they resisted EADGBE TUNUNG.
