Even "Mother Russia" was not immune to the charms of a good lever gun. In 1915, Russia backed her ally Serbia and subsequently had Austria-Hungary and Germany declared war against it.
Suddenly in needs of millions of rifles, orders for the classic Mosin-Nagant M1891 were given to U.S. companies Westinghouse and Remington, but time would be needed for the factories to tool up. What could be done to meet immediate demand? Winchesters Model 1895 was already in production stateside and chambered in a .30 caliber rimmed cartridge.
With a few tell-tale modifications for the Russian Army, such as a chambering in the 7.62x54R cartridge, these lever guns soon saw service in the hands of Imperial Russian soldiers.
