I just finished the /filmcast afterdark about this show. To me, it seemed you all agreed the two main characters didn't end up in the same timeline. In your video here, you mention Nadias white shirt, but look at what Alan is wearing! Scarf-wearing Alan is not with white-shirt Nadia, but after exiting the tunnel, scarf-wearing Alan and white-shirt Nadia is together. That's a pretty big argument for them ending in the same timeline. Great video!
I watched this amazing show while going through a severe depression this spring and it was incredibly therapeutic for me. I've since watched all eight episodes ten times. That's how important this show was for me. Oh, and yeah, the 36th birthday thing is kinda essential to the whole story line.
I rewatched the series this week and just noticed the 2 Nadias at the end. Now I’m searching RU-vid looking for what people think they mean. The way she kind of yells out and looks relieved/happy made me think. Almost like she was being reborn maybe? And then Allan jumping for joy next to her like he’s feeling the same thing.
This video review was fantastic. I had watched the series #unsullied and found this video very informative and enlightening. EDIT: I think someone needs to write an essay on the many fictional representations of the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics. For example, compare Rick and Morty with Russian Doll. Note the contrast between Rick and Nadia at realizing there might be many parallel universes: Rick seems to sociopathically think that an infinite number of variations of each person means that any individual life other than his own is worthless; in contrast, Nadia is horrified to realize that all these other worlds are real and that she has caused harm to others.
Alan had to do all of the self reflection + the reflection on Beartice's behalf. Seeing your own faults and the harm they do is hard, working on them is even harder. Despite everything, Alan came a long way. Beatrice on the other hand saw herself as this down-to-earth martyr who had to babysit his fragile emotions for 10 years, and I don't think that changed. Nobody forced her. Not even Alan. And yet she kept going, because "He's too sensitive and she's the oh-so-reasonable rock he needs". Then she snapped, and opted out anyway, in the worst possible time and manner. She felt justified to cheat, and felt no remorse, because ''Mike is no baby like Alan''. And what have we got here? Mike cheated. A bit of karma was nice for her, but I doubt she learned anything. Not to mention that her decade-old resentment towards Alan must have contributed to his self-worth issues.
1. This video is fantastic. Thanks again for the shoutout. Your analysis is always thoughtful and compelling and it is awesome to have informed it at all. 2. Another scene that was really resonant to me within the therapy metaphor of Nadia's storyline was a brief moment in an episode towards the end of the season where Greta Lee's character Maxine goes to the stairway with Nadia. Nadia freaks out because she feels like if she tries to walk down the stairs she'll die (and for good reason - it had happened to her a lot before). I legitimately teared up when Maxine validated her fear, told her she would walk with her, and then they successfully descended the stairs together. Working to overcome things, whether with a mental health professional or a friend helping you through, is such a powerful feeling and that scene - to me - masterfully brought up how meaningful it feels to finally, so to speak, "get down the stairs alive."
I’m glad it’s a half hour show. Able to binge watch it and not feel overwhelmed or overdragged. Compare to other 1 hour Netflix tv shows I find myself playing with my phone because I lost interest.
I think that the fact that she keeps dying on her birthday means she takes life for granted and is just going through the motion like everyone. She learns the purpose of life and towards the end starts to appreciate it after countless deaths. She learns that life doesn’t have a purpose but you can give it purpose and fulfillment with the people you choose to involve in your life.
This video review was AWESOME. I never saw the two Nadias walking either and someone commented. As soon as the show ended I searched for analysis of the ending. But you explained it better than any of the other RU-vid reviews. They did a good job, but yours was the best by far. Thanks!
I watched it twice so far and I think they both died and moved up. Death is final but in their cases they had to clean up their human act before they can go through the tunnel. They both wanted to die and they did several times but had to learn life lessons first to move on. The therapist told nadia she had to forgive. If it was just a walking through a tunnel at the end with a very strange parade with horse nothing makes sense because nadia in white shirt and Alan in scarf would remember that they died many times and only they would remember. Nobody would believe them if they told so what's the point. I think at the end sad Alan merged with healed Alan and wreckless nadia merged with healed nadia. Nadia wore black like she was grieving her inner child maybe showing why there was two nadia's passing the torch. Both nadia grabbed the torch and the smiling happy in white nadia came through the tunnel where the two nadia was going back to the past. Or going away. Maybe Alan and nadia were suppose to share the experience to help each other heal. Doing a good deed. I dont know but it's one great deep very deep show. That's my take is all. Mirror images of them showed up in an episode where they were at the party talking and camera angle was on them standing in room and them in mirror. Mirror was placed there for us to see their mirror images. So much to this show. Awesome
My wife thought that the parade was a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) parade, which makes a lot of sense with your theory. However, how do Nadia and Alan come back for a season two?
@@michaeldinsmore5539 Hi. Maybe season 2 will be totally different. I dont know but this sure was a thought provoking series. I agree with your wife on the parade. A celebration in my opinion of rebirth perhaps to a higher place. If parade is about death and tunnel being what some say they see in the near death experiences and the light at the end of the tunnel I dont know but I think they died and was cleansed. Also I noticed oatmeal the cat toward the end sitting on counter and camera zoomed in...well cats they say jokingly have 9 lives. Interesting show huh?
I feel that after Allen and Nadia merge at the end they created a bigger problem in the timelines. I just watch this last night and I can't believe I slept on this show! I can't wait until season two drops! I have some unanswered questions! How is Nadine's mother and her past self involved with the time loop? Were both Allen and Nadine suppose to die permanently and them staying alive interrupt the timeline? If you ever seen Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Affect or read the Sound of Thunder, the ending may not be a happy one but causing a bigger problem! When is season two premiering on Netflicks?
This was great! I also thought it was somewhat metaphorical, ie just an artistic way of showing how everything is so interconnected and yet distinct as well. Great show though, and sweet video.
I watched this series because of your comments on the slashfilmcast. All I can say is this analysis made the experience of watching the series feel more complete. Would be great if you could do this for more films.
Kinda unrelated. I went back and listened to the /film ep about Phantom Thread and I really got a great new insight from former regular host Katy's review. As a dude i just did not not look at things the way she drew out and I really appreciated it. Please consider working on having a female co-host on as much as possible. Your wife has been great when shes been on and ofc JoWrotethis.
I watched the show because my girlfriend was watching it, and I found it interesting. I think that maybe a Quantum Leap type situation is happening, where they have to help eachother because their deaths aren't supposed to happen.
Just watched , sorry to,be late to the scene! One thing I was unsure of, the 2 Alan' s merged, but there were now 3 Nadia's in existence. What does this signify?
You, reading this...Yeah, you! Listen, I know you don't remember me, but we've met here on RU-vid 22 times now. I know things about you and I can prove it! Like, for example, you've set Harry Nilsson's "Gotta Get Up" as your alarm sound, haven't you? Me too! That's what started it all!
The ending is a skull and bones parade and she is Mary Magdalene (red haired and denoted with a goddess ending title) and he is Jesus (or vice versa) they save each other in a love story and are the same but opposite
