Join me on a stroll through the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. Macondray Lane is a residential neighborhood with no car access. It was used for the fictional neighborhood of Barbary Lane in the netflix show (based on the stories by Armistead Maupin) Tales of the City. There are a few of these in San Francisco, most notably the area just above the Filbert Steps.
We'll also stop by Ina Coolbrith Park, which has one of the best views of downtown and the north side of San Francisco.

Thank you for this video. I live in this neighborhood, on the Taylor street side, and can attest to the charm and amazing vistas. Macondray lane is a true gem.

I finally got to have what I call my Mary Anne moment from Tales of the City. I had the awesome opportunity to walk up the staircase of Macondry Lane in late July. Such a cool little alcove in the city. The Vallejo St staircase later in this video are awesome too. Russian Hill is probably my favorite part of SF.

I remember my aunt lived in a high rise penthouse on Russian hill on Green street. When we'd go there to visit, she had spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the downtown SF skyline. Nice memories of growing up in San Francisco. 😃

LUCKY fellow ! Was that even the one & only Bellaire Twr @ 1101 Green - the classiest of em all (along with 2500 Steiner a mile to the W). What decade(s), please ? If you got any pictures from the apt & and inside of it, suggest do a vid of your own by even starting a channel based on the story. So few original comments like yours come up. People who are or having been inside this highly discreet upscale area are TOO discreet to reveal anything as personal as this, generally speaking. Doesn't matter if the whole world is actually watching or reading. We are all infatuated with POCCIAn hill's unique charm and its semi-echanted past and presence. The same seems to be going with Sea Cliff, Pac Hgts - not to mention Belvedere. Virtually nothing on this platform nor even bookwise available on their history and development. The same with personal recollections/memoirs. = TOO well-kept low-profile subject matters. Living is giving - concealing is unforgiving. The only permanent factor is that everything flows, nothing stays the same, and time waits for no one because it is a thief. Leave a mark by sharing, that is the beginning of all art, no matter how meaningful or topnotch or not so. Sanctity of everyday is what counts. Every second is eternal because it is instantly gone 4 good ...

@@sulevisydanmaa9981 To be honest, my family were there only maybe half dozen times. Yes it was at 1101 Green street, 14th floor if I remember correctly. I was only 9 years old at the time. We were the poor people in the family, so we weren't invited over regularly. My aunt was the rich side of the family. My mother has sinced passed on for over twenty years now. But as a young child I remember the expensive furniture and painting in the penthouse, and the awesome views of all of San Francisco, the bridges and even parts of Tiburon and Belvedere could be seen from the penthouse. I really don't remember too much of the interior of the place, other than the large windows to view from. Just fond memories of being in the nicest of neighborhoods in the City when I was growing up. I will say they had a maid and a chef that cooked the meals there. I remember Fabolous dinners there. And in those times (the early 1960's) guests didn't bring cameras, so I unfortunately don't have any pictures of the interior of the penthouse, just the memories of a child going to visit the high class side of the family, and enjoying great food and the views from on top of the hill.

@barton percival YOUR friendly and quick reply made my day, though I ain t no DH ...Just wonder why so tight-lipped about their, not only status but the life in these areas in general, way back and today. But to each his/their own ..Let's just enjoy what this ch delivers, his taste of choice is very good - as is another even smaller 1 called Cocoa on the road. That also concentrates on off-the-beaten-path aspects/milieus of SF, but are starving 4 subscribers unlike the ones which only deliver the worn-out tourist areas everybody is bored of. TERVEISIÄ SUOMESTA = Greetings from Finland ! Welcome. I ve spent some 5 mos tot in the city, 86,88,90. Never met anyone from POCCIA Hill. Stay frosty ....

@@sulevisydanmaa9981 Your welcome, glad I made your day. You know I myself don't understand all the tight lipped from the very rich. Up until today, I still don't know what my aunt or uncle did to gain their riches and to be able to live in high society up on Russian Hill. I grew up in the inner Sunset district. And we rarely made it to my aunt's penthouse up on Green Street. But in the late 50's and late 60's San Francisco had many great places to visit. The beautiful Fox Theater on Market street, Whitney's Playland at the Beach. My grandparents lived for 45 years in an apartment in the Marina District just one block up from the Palace of Fine Arts. 3465 Broderick street. And in the 60's San Francisco on the 4th of July would shoot off the big fireworks display on the Marina greens. My uncle Nate and aunt Irene ( from my mother's side) live on the 3rd floor apartments at the foot of Fillmore street facing the Marina greens. We'd go there every 4th of July to watch the fireworks show from their apartment. Had wonderful memories growing up in that era of San Francisco. Cheers 👍

I did hear that Armistead Maupin based Tales of the city on Macondray Lane, renaming it Barbary Lane in the series. How I wish I was Maryanne Singleton calling home to say she wasn’t coming back! That would have been my dream. I may never actually make my dream of living in SF a reality, but I sure do enjoy your videos and exploring all the hidden gems this beautiful city has to offer! 💖🌁 Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! 🤗

Wasn't Russian Hill destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1906? I know that Nob Hill was destroyed.
@pwp8737

the apex of Russian Hill wasn't destroyed by the quake and subsequent fires, it remained an oasis in an otherwise devastated city.
