This is my first video from the US. I had a lot of emotions and cultural shocks. I will tell you about some of them in this video. You are going to see a little bit of my college. Also to hear about my first thoughts. Some cinematic frames. And of course my first potluck which was perfect.
Thank you so much for those who supported me and helped me to buy a new camera. This video is made with this cam with your help.

Please remember that the US, like Russia, is a very big, extremely diverse country. That at any one time, you're seeing one tiny piece of the US and that whatever observations or experiences you have are about that one little area and not the entire country. This reminds me of when I first moved to Germany. My student housing was not yet available, so the university arranged for me to stay in a graduate student's apartment a good distance from the campus. At first, it was a bit weird to be hanging out with older people. The first weekend, they took me to an "over 30 party", even though I was barely 20. But the comfort that older people feel about themselves was surprisingly helpful to someone new to a place. The people at the party were patient and kind and that went a long way to making me feel comfortable in my new home.

In Czechia, in contrast to Russia, we have a century long tradition of those "potlacks" (10:03 , called "potlach" in Czech), in the true spirit of the Wild West romantics. With guitars, songs, campfires, chats, ... with a bunch of friends called here "tramps", usually in nature near some river or lake... No wonder we have had the most country and bluegrass bands in the Czech Republic after the USA ...
@jamesedwards6173
@jamesedwards6173 2 года назад
Interesting... because potluck and potlatch are both words in English, and while they're vaguely/tangentially related concepts, they're still quite distinct in meaning, with the latter word referencing a gift-giving feast tradition of Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest of the USA and Canada.

Potluck is an English word though (originated in England), and came to mean a shared meal where guests bring dishes during the Great Depression. It's pretty literal, from the words pot and luck, meaning the guests get the luck of the pot. Their inclusion of music is a different thing for me, and more musically inclined group of friends might do it but it's not a standard potluck thing, at least here in SC. Our big thing is oyster roasts though, not so much potlucks.

@@sobrcelt I like Southern style potato salad. Mayonnaise based but it also has shredded carrots, diced onions and bell peppers, and some add pickle relish to it. You can also add paprika. Oh and I forgot the sliced hard boiled eggs.

Technically, it's your SECOND video - if we count the Live Stream from the other day 😉 But in all seriousness, I really liked it: both the "excursion" to Walmart and the age-friendly potluck with international food and music 💚💖

I don't really count streams for videos cause I don't spend the whole day for editing them :) Potluck was really great, I hope to attend one more of those here. Thank you for the comment!

Hey Zack, glad to see you doing well in the US! You know one idea about the origin of potluck dinners is the idea of the Pacific Northwest indigenous "potlatch" ceremonies. There people from all around the area would bring gifts and offerings, and different nations would work out their differences, and wealthy chiefs would give away their excess beyond what they needed. What's so cool about that for someone like you, is that the indigenous people of North America of course originally came from Russia's far east. Perhaps it was people who were at one time from Komsomolsk who started the idea of the potluck 🤯 Maybe. Maybe not, but it's cool to see your adventures in North America! Keep up the great work!

What a difference a year or two makes. I in my 70’s and have fond memories of small town potlucks. It’s good to meet you. I have been able to meet several Russians through RU-vid. Most were young folks who lived in villages or were students, just real people inviting the world into their lives and sharing their experience. It was about culture, before politics became ugly.

Your Pot Luck had music! All the pot lucks I've been to we sort out and talk. Usually about local things that have happened in the neighborhood or if there was a big fire how we all heard fire trucks coming from everywhere! It was always a good time and at the end all the food would be divided up so the next day you could eat and Mom wouldn't have to cook!

lol yeah bud, cars are the lifeblood of the US, which can be good and bad, so aside from a few places, public transport options are kind of subpar because most people have cars. Sometimes they can be nice though in some places.

I'd wager that desegregation played no small part in the transition. Whenever the conversation turns to public transportation, middle-class white people will inevitably bemoan the "quality of people" who ride the bus, whereas before the interstate system bus travel was basically the vehicle of choice, even for many people who owned a car.

Welcome to America Zack! America has many problems; they are just different problems from those in Russia. Make sure you set up an American bank account and a PayPal account. Then people can donate through PayPal, and as long as they donate using their bank account, you get all of the money. No reduction for fees in what you receive. I hope you have great experiences!

I'm just now watching this video at the end of April 2022. What a delightful young man you are Zack! I'm so glad you had the chance to come to America and have the experience of being an international student. I hosted a Russian boy for a high school exchange program in 1997. We had a blast together! He's been my dear friend ever since. I just subscribed to your channel and now I'm going to find other of your newer videos. I'm here to see what you've been up to.

Good video Zack! St Paul College looks very nice. You should have a good time there and hopefully will learn a lot. A potluck is the perfect introduction to America. How did the musicians know a Russian song? When I looked for recipes online for your salad they all were spelled Olivier. Looks like a good variation of a potato salad. A lot more ingredients to make it interesting. The US is a car culture. According to Wikipedia there are around 270 million in a nation of 330 million; about 816 per 1000. Dense urban centers will have better mass transit and the suburbs and rural areas much less or none at all. Great work with your new camera. Looking forward to more videos. Also, good job editing and uploading the video. Seems like your internet connection problems are resolved. Cheers from New Jersey. PS. Glad you "stopped by" to support Natasha's live stream with Zangieff.

Very nice potluck. It’s great you had so many musicians there. I can’t ever recall one with live music. Potlucks are usually family, neighborhood, or work building related. It’s a great way to learn about others. With people from all over the world it’s a chance to each authentic foods from their cultures.
