There's no reason to believe this war would only last a couple of months or a year. If past conflicts are an indicator then it's perfectly reasonable to expect this war to take between 5-10 years, after which both sides might come to an agreement to keep it unresolved just like the Korean war which remains frozen to this day.

Yes, Russians and Ukrainians still excessively use tanks and armored vehicles. While they are viable in hitting targets such as the Leopard Tanks Ukraine being able to shoot 2-3km, the new boom technology is cheap and easy to make products. Drones, Anti-Tank Weaponry/Mines have played a major part in showing how unmanned drones have made a heavy impact. Artillery is shown to still be very viable, as we saw in a lot of this war that heavy shelling has been used and is more effective than risking lives. We see how tanks and armored vehicles are simply becoming less effective for combat. While Russia and Ukraine employ these new technologies, they both have crippiling flaws. Ukraine: population, still not too good at combined arms combat, lacking equipment, having to rely on learning lessons. Russia: corruption even worse than Ukraine's, lessons aren't learned where troops still ram their heads at the enemy (Bakhmut, Vuhledar, Avdivvka, Marinka) causing heavy losses, poor morale. I just touched the surface. I predict the war to go on at max for another 2-4 years depending on how well Ukraine defends, the better Ukraine defends the more it shows Russia this isn't viable even with so many casualties already. @@sontrombone6907 well to be honest Russia did only one wave of mobilization.While Urkraine did multiple waves and keep changing the laws regarding mobilization by expanding the range when you can be mobilized. As well as Russia have some serious advantage in artillery which is the most common reason for the casualty. But from the other side Russia was more often on the offence as well as they base their mobilization efforts on volunteers by stimulating them with a lot of money (in comparison with regular Russian citizen). But still the main point here is mobilization waves and changes in law in Ukraine which you don't need if everything goes fine. So logically speaking for me its not hard to believe that Ukraine might have more casualties. But of cource I dunno this for sure. And we probably will never knew the truth.

russians in the beginning had more professional soldiers i think. UA was mobilizing massively and had a big conscript army but russians have more vehicles, artillery, ammunation and air support. If EU and NATO wouldn't be sitting on their thumbs patting UA on the back and actually did a proper land lease this war would most likely be over already, saving many lives on BOTH sides.

Russia had the largest army in WW1 but that didn't stop the Austrians ,Germans and ottomans and Bulgarians from giving them hell

I think Ukraine will be fine. As long as NATO and the EU keep sending aid then they can win a war of attrition as the sanctions are slowly wearing away Russia's ability to effectively arm itself. Only problem is manpower.

it's not pointless, ukraine is fighting for freedom. Freedom is worth fighting for. WW1 was pointless because it was a bunch of old monarchs wanting to expand their empires. WW2 and the cold war wasn't pointless because People fought against fascism and USSR, and this war isn't pointless for the same reason.

Its not. In the 6 months long battle of Stalingrad, frontlines didn't change either. And that was the battle which broke the spine of Nazis. Fighting is happening, and whichever side gains the advantage will gain ground in matter of days to hours.

The number of groupings is a "pool" with two pipes: "flows in", "flows out"

Assuming external factors don't intervene and force one side to negotiate (Ukraine runs out of Western support, Russia caves to sanctions etc) then, if the fighting goes on long enough one side will eventually exhaust itself collapse. Probably it will happen suddenly. That's what happened in 1918. No substantial movement on the front for years and then Germany just couldn't sustain the effort anymore. If they hadn't surrendered their army would have collapsed. But there is no way to predict how long that will take. Could be 2024. Could be 2035.

It will end with the complete military exhaustion of one or both sides. Which side it be exhausted it's impossible to say at this point, but I would say that if Ukraine manages to hang on into mid 2025 things probably start getting really grim for the Russians. Ukraine has only not lost because of foreign aid, which is fickle and unreliable. Russia has only not lost because it has a massive stockpile of stored weapons from the Soviet era, which it has been drawing on to replace losses. If the foreign aid to Ukraine extends into mid 2025 and things keep going as they are going, then Russia is going to run out of weapons as it will have exhausted it's Soviet stockpile. But the other thing that can run out is manpower, and Ukraine is definitely struggling with that. So the question is, "What is going to run out first?"
