Come join me as we open our first MRE from Russia. Crazy good or crazy bad, let's find out together! Dave's channel link here........ / @boogerbuttboogerbuttm...
The sign on the box is actually a seal of Russian Federal Customs Service. Given that almost every branch of Russian gvt has some kind of paramilitary/law enforcement unit in its roster, we can assume that this ration was produced for them.
@@MeAncient You're welcome. Russian rations usually don't have any descriptions of content in foreign languages so if you'll have problems with identifying a particular item, let me know.
Hello guys from Siberia, from an experienced user of these army rations. I watched the video with a smile, there are some points that we do not do with these products and items. The dry fuel burner should be turned over with its sharp edges down and flatter, sharp edges towards the ground. You do not need to open porridge and soups when heating, or you need to slightly open a small edge, if instead of a burner you burn over a higher heat, then it will be more saturated and not so dry and naturally the heating process will be faster. Vegetable stew (appetizer) is practically not heated in our country, it is usually used to quickly snack on a biscuit with vegetables or add it as a cold salad to a hot one. Tea is not brewed until it is very tart and strong, which will ruin its taste and, for some, increase blood pressure, which is sometimes unnecessary. Also, I did not see in the set hunting matches of a larger size and impregnated with a special compound, because of which they do not go out into the wind even when wet. Bon appetit and rest to everyone PS with pills for disinfection is a separate laugh))) I was afraid that you would brew them with tea
@@albundy3867 hello, you're welcome :) a plastic knife is something like a funny multitool) it can be used as a clothespin for an open bag from which not all the food was taken out (mashed potatoes, for example), you need to twist the edges of the bag and clamp it like a paper clip. in fact, the equipment is not always the same, somewhere there are already just plastic flat knives, as well as a little advice on warming up porridge with meat, you need to cut the pressed porridge directly in the package into pieces into cubes like a cake and add a drop of water
Those small pills are water purifiers. And about heating the meal... When I was in Russian army we were making a hole by this plastic knife in a package in order to prevent it from exploding. Because if you open the package it takes ages to heat it up so that's a solution we came with. Want to mention that the meal was designed with an idea that you're supposed to eat everything with crackers like apple jam, grounded vegetables and of course the main dish. You may warm up vegetables but usually we had been eating them cold when I was in Russian army.
Whenever you type “I was in Russian army” for whatever reason the voice in my head sounds like it’s coming from a man who could fist fight a bear and win lol.
the green device is used to open and cut in to packaging as well as life the containers off the islet stove after its heated.. The tabs are water purification... If you have a smart phone google has a very decent translate ap where you can take a photo of the item or thing needing to be translated it will translate it in to English.. anyways thanks for making such grate content.. and sharing it with us..
Also our "cans" supposed to be heated 90% closed, like just with little part of lid taken off, thus it will be 1 tablet enough to bring it to 80-90 degrees celsies even in winter.
@@TheIdiotPlays kinda. They produce a side gas that is poisonous, but it is dangerous if you are in a very small and unventilated room. Otherwise, you can cook with the lid open without harm.
That green thing is meant to be a small blade for cutting open some of the food packaging with heavy gloves on, when it's too cold to take the gloves off, or your fine motor function in your fingers is impaired due to cold.
@@zackari yes, and US troops carry mess kits and hygiene supplies of their own. That doesn't stop the DOD from putting toilet paper and plastic cutlery into MREs. It's a relatively cheap redundancy to cover troops who lose or damage items.
Buckwheat would be grechka, kasha can be made with any grain, it's usually buckwheat due to higher caloric density in kasha form than other grains. And culture too, we do love our grechka. :P
You shouldn't open the packs before puting it on fire. It heats up much faster and it's the intended way. Just be careful not to burn your food that way. Also MREs have wind-resistant matches to light the fuel up: ignite one match and lay it on top of the fuel pad and let it burn.
The red meat is most likely canned steamed beef. It always has that bright red color. Other variations of the hash can include barley, hated by all branches of the Russian military. You got lucky with Buckwheat.
I disagree with you about pearl barley porridge, about the fact that they did not like it in the army, it was a long time ago, because if you digest it like jelly, the porridge in these rations is very tasty and it is healthier than buckwheat because it is beneficial for the intestines and blood.
No wonder that I hated the food sometimes, barley was the main food source for Roman soldiers and it was not liked, it also makes you either very loose or very constipated
I ate the lemon tuna and tortillas mre yesterday during hunting season. Terrible taste. It’s also the only one I’ve seen that came with no heater. Spreading cold cheese didn’t work too well
so from my understanding why the russian meals have a shorter shelf life is due to them being all organic. Having had both the Russian meals and American mres I kind of like the Russian meals more they tend to be a bit more Harty and flavorful. the Russians also tend to give you a bit extra.
Hi from Russia. Thanks for the great video. In fact, many organizations have their own MRE. Special services have their own, prisoners have their own, different types of military forces have different MREs. But the dishes are often repeated. + many commercial options, very similar to the military MRE. Really a lot of good options for the day. The coffee there is always shit. And heat metal with food in boiling water, but the package must be closed . 10 minutes and your food is hot and not burnt.
I think the only reason they open all the way is to show the people watching. But it is very good to know how to cook in case I can find some of these. Another youtube gal accidentally used the apple jam/butter as a hot drink mix cracked me up but myself and my hubby were curious how would that taste.? We took some of my home made apple jam/jelly(I don't clear my juice and so its thicker and not clear like jelly but its not chunky lol. ) We heated up water and put a good spoonful in and it was as tasty as hot mulled cider. Just a tad sweeter. Hubby occasionally adds it to his hot tea with a spot of honey too. Sorry I rambled lol
11:47 I'm from Romania and we also have this, we call it Zacusca, which are just vegetables basically, you don't heat this up, you enjoy it cold or at room temperature, you spread it on a cracker or a good slice of bread
Dave is a great friend of mine. Happy to see him send something your way. Always good to see my friends being super generous and giving to everyone!! Love you Dave and big huggs to L.J 💜💜
@@MeAncient I would love to send you something from a different country. European mre's are amazing and so thought out. I'll ask Dave for you email. Ok? Fellow vet here
I found a listing on ebay for a ration that looks exactly like the one you had. The contents listing is: Army Crackers 2/50 g Buckwheat Porridge with Beef 1/250 g Vegetable Stew 1/100 g Fruit jam 45 g Black Tea 1/2 g Sugar 1/20 g Portable heater with fuel tablets. Water purification tablets 2 pcs. Wet Wipes 2 pcs. Plastic Spoon 3 pcs. (only saw one in the picture, so not sure why 3) Can opener 1 pcs. (Saw nothing in picture for this. Did not see that green arrow head thing either.)
My understanding is you punch a few holes in the top of the meals with the green thing, and heat them up that way, so don't open the whole thing up before it's hot
🧐I think somebody fooled you back home this box doesn't look like Russian MRE yeah it's in Russian but must be another western portion of fake western news on US soil... here is how RMRE looks >> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tYJt7sE8q0I.html
@@garguleumbra Only old cans that are not found in our rations since probably 2007, if not more. Even in civilian rations for doctors, firefighters, rescuers, miners, etc. Probably only in rations for tourists you can still find round tin cans, but they can be easily opened with a knife or an ax. :)
I'm guessing the best way to heat it up would be to just pierce the foil cover to let steam out, put it on the stove, and then peel and eat after it's heated through. Would minimize heat loss.
That vegetable thing you had it's called Zakuska from what i could read on the package, it's a mix of vegetables spread that you could heat up and spread it on the crackers. It's not necessary to heat it up but it tastes better. The other tin is beef i believe mixed with buckwheat, pretty neat stuff to get, also it needs good stirring as not to get burnt when cooked on the little stove. It's interesting to see a marine trying these out and question himself what he's dealing with :). Wish i could have a Russian MRE for myself as i tried most of the US modern MREs and they were mostly good stuff and really morale boosting.
This is a one-time ration of the army medical service. :) Standard army in another package, similar to TetraPak, also the package from it can be used to transfer water, and it is for the whole day, for 3 meals. There are more than 10 different compositions of dishes. There are also specialized rations where different packaging is used, maybe a flameless heater, as in American rations, a different set of dishes, mostly additional goodies and drinks. Even army biscuits are available in 3 different varieties, green being the most common, blue from wholemeal flour, and red from rye flour or with its addition, if I'm not mistaken. :)
6:11 water purification tablet, please dont eat it 18:17 it's braised beef "tushonka" it supposed to be red and it's cooked It was interesting to hear your view on this mre being filling, grains (buckwheat, barley, rice) are staple of russian military food - it's easy to mass cook and will fill stomach fast. Being on internet i've learned that US spends money and effort to engineer their food to bring interesting food items into mres like pizza to boost morale, and in general takes into account psychology of a common soldier. And russian mres are like "you had a meal? You don't feel hungry anymore? Then job well done!" xD
I personally like the Russian theory better. Too many different tastes involved in what is a good meal (Like who ever thought of Tuna with fat free mayo?!?)
Buckwweat does not just fill up the stomach, it has plenty of protein and tastes great and is definitely more enjoyable than eating an engineered pizza.
I've been hospitalised a couple times since June with major intestinal issues. I needed some new content to binge. I've watched some other channels doing the same MRE or C-Ration reveals. I've come to thoroughly enjoy your channel and it's helped distract me very well. Thanks and keep up the great content.
I never understood why Russia or the USSR is portrayed as a snowy cold country, and is always mentioned in the context of "cold Russian winters". Most of the largest cities are in the temperate climatic zone, as are most of Europe or the northern United States.
That Russian hash looks like Haggis to me. Or has the consistency of Haggis which is a very marmite thing. Haggis you either love it or hate it. I’m a big lover with Haggis, but you gotta have gravy with it, otherwise it can get a bit dry. Or what the Scots call it”Haggis, neeps and tatties” Haggis, parsnips and potatoes in English😂
Tbh I do like Scottish food way more than English. Me and my Cousin befriended a Scotty through online chat some years ago and this year we finally where able to meet him in person so we went from Germany to Scotland by car and went camping. Beautiful country and nice people! Haggis somewhat tasted like Leberwurst. It was pretty nice which is a big surprise after the countless stories we heard about it :D Irn Bru is also really good!
Couldn't agree more! I had one comment that said it was not an MRE, as in military, but actually simply a Russian government meal issued in a particular department. Hence the lunch pail look. TFW
@@MeAncient, I know. I think the 24 hour rations are called IMPs. It’s all the same really. As long as we enjoy them and share our knowledge, it’s all good. Lastly, the guys that sent you the ration are the best! Dave is a great guy. Can’t wait for the next video!!
👉👉👉Russia is well known for their very very dark and mild black tea - they love it. Ohh and the main meal is buckwheat and minced meat it is extremely nutritious and very healthy. 👍👍👍
Buckwheat porridge, it no popular in USA or western part of EU, but in Russia and several other Slavic countries, this cereal is one of the staple foods. My son eats this porridge with milk every day, and if it is not available, he demands.
9:06 - In general, usually a set of such rations includes storm matches, matches or whatever they are called - wind and water resistant. They kindle such pills perfectly.
I love this channel. The way they show everything is fascinating. I can almost taste the taste of everything. Keep it up, I'm your fan and I wish you all the best!
dudes, Google translator has a translation from a picture. install the translation from Russian to English and point at the inscriptions, then you will not have to guess what is written there. Соль - salt, перец - pepper, etc.
This was a great video! I suggest using a translating app when you do MREs with different language. You can take a picture and it will translate the text for you. It won’t be perfect but it will be close enough to understand
While not looking very appetizing to the typical westerner, the Russian rations are not bad at all. They are rations more for "adult" taste buds unlike what you will find in modern US mre's and there is no question which I prefer. It's not fancy or much variety, but what you get is decent "real food" that doesn't taste like bad canned pasta and sugar. The vegetable caviar, the apple preserve spread and pate's being particularly outstanding. I would eat these at home. The cheese spread is ok, very mild but nothing noteworthy and while the heavy buckwheat porridges are not exactly my cup of tea, put enough salt on them and they are perfectly fine and would be decent for cold weather meals as well.
I loved flying Russian Airlines, we had mussels for lunch!!!!!! The flight attendant gave outheret menus to everybody on a plane. The selection was amazing, I felt I was in the restaurant. When I shared my story with my Ukrainian friend on our trip to Las Vegas in 2015, he freaked out, got angry, and left me and my daughter in hotel strangled. I understood how much Ukrainians hated that Russians did very well and succeeded. Since than, I keep travelling between Russia and USA, and ready to move there.
We had to get our haircut when we entered boot camp. It was all taken off so we were all shaved bald. Then there were regulations as to how long our hair could be after boot camp. But in boot camp, we were always shaved on top.@@alexandr2392
you dont suppose to open up the can so it heats up really fast even with one tablet even in freezing cold conditions outside. just keep the lid sealed and you're good to go.
True. Especially when you’ve been on a 12 hour patrol carry loads of kit, ammo and gun, your starving. Self heating chicken curry and rice was the best in the British MRE pack.
Greetings from Poland! I loved this video and the Polish MRE video too! The American terriyaki beef MRE had to be from about 1993. I'm an American teacher in Poland. When I was a kid, my Dad bought MRE's in bulk for hunting trips. I remember the MRE series just before the beef terriyaki and they always had little bottles of Tabasco Sauce and those big flat flavorless crackers with the oatmeal bars that were good but always crumbled to pieces! The Food in both The Russian and Polish MRE's are common for this part of the world. Potted meat, Pasta dishes and tomato and papryka preserves are everyday stuff. Buckwheat grits and meat are some of my favorite foods. There is also a sausage called kashanka. (Buckwheat grits and blood sausage with a tripe sausage caseing) Kashanka is good as a summer grill sausage and also as a pan fried sausage when you're on a shoe string budget as packs of kashanka are reasonably priced at the supermarket.
My father would always get cases of MRE’s (American) at the PX for our hunting/camping trips as well! I remember those little bottles of tobasco, they were needed to make some dishes taste a little better. To be fair, they really weren’t awful. Just not what I would call fine dining. 😂 It’s been almost 20 years since he retired. I’m now wondering if he can still get on base with his Veterans card… I may have to continue the tradition with my boys now that they are old enough to hunt.
According to the box this is the intermediary food ration, guess something you can have between meals provided by a filed kitchen/before the field kitchen got up and running. On the dates: the expiration date was 29/10/21, 29th of October of 2021. Hope you'll get a proper 24 hours IRP ration with a star, those are are honestly kinda nice, but be aware that some of those menus contain a pack of ambient-temperature pork fat, an acquired taste for sure. Oh, and 3 fuel tabs are just because they use the same pack for the 24 hours full MRE, and it's easier to use the same thing. And veggie thing is eaten cold, but I guess you can warm it up if you want to.
There are translation apps available like google translate. You can point your phone camera to a foreign language and it translates it to English. It may not be perfect, but you get the idea what's printed on the package.
24:58 fun fact there’s a reason US MREs are smaller than RF MREs US MREs are packed with all kinds of shit like vitamins etc you are basically eating a protein shake mixed with preservatives being smaller doesn’t necessarily mean less the main reason they are smaller is because the US learned from D-day having a full belly and taking a injury to the intestines is a medical nightmare for any surgeon not only because of sepsis but because of the time it will take to clean any food that removed itself from the digestive tract making the chance of survival for others far lower in a mass casualty scenario given medical practitioners are occupied because of a mre was to big so basically the US came up with the idea of how can we make it just as nutritional if not more at a smaller size anyways our MREs pack a punch for their size and increase your chance of survival
Not only that. You can fight and move much better without a full stomach. You can transport much more calories per truck load too. So it's better for medical, logistic and overall fighting capabilites.
I wish more people would know about this. It's not perfect but will do. Just like you can highlight text in any language and get it translated on the spot, its the google translate extension.
those heat tablets are hexamine fuel tablets (Esbit solid fuel) its the EU / Russian Version of an Flameless Ration heater even though they are not so flameless as an FRH ;) and the small little tabletts are water purification tablets!
I think you had the metal stove thing upside down, im assuming the spikes are for digging into the ground and then the flat side is for placing the meals on, might explain why it took two of them tabs to cook the hash also since the flame was much farther away with the spike side up.
I love your stories! My dad was a Silver Star recipient in Korea, and my father in law was in the Navy in WW2, and I loved hearing their stories. Both have passed, so it’s good to hear stories again! And I love your willingness to try strange and new foods! Great reviews!
Dont put "zacusca" (Закуска) on fire (the red tomato paste in can). That is supposed to be eaten cold on bread. It's made of cooked vegetables and conserved already. Specific to east Europe granny cuisine, good when u are lazy to warm anything to eat.
I love watching your videos also Dave is a really good guy he’s very generous and a all around great person he sent me a Russian ration when I was in rehab from having a infected knee replacement removed great review
@@MeAncient I really enjoy your reviews I just had a French 24 hr ration sent to my uncle he was in the Army back in the 80’s when it was only the brown bags he was in for 20 years and had just gotten out right before the 1st gulf war.
