Here's the one and only "Russian Rag" - a big ragtime hit by George L. Cobb (1886-1942). Published back in 1918, it "borrows" a motif from Rachmaninoff's famous C#-minor Prelude. For more of Ethan's pianistical renderings, subscribe to this youtube channel, or check out his website (www.EthanUslan.com), or listen to the Carolina Shout podcast.

Great job! My piano professor in University - the Great James P. Dennihan once played this for a university concert. The man was a legendary pianist. He's passed now, so I recently found out. Rest his soul. Jim played this piece with extreme distinction, virtuosity, and soul. You can really hear the Rachmaninoff aggression and virtuosity in both Jim's performance, and in yours. I love it. Well done sir!

Tuba Skinny band of New Orleans played this on their Ragtime Album years ago which led me here. Truly Classical music meets ragtime here...this is a melodic Jem, unusual from most patterns of ragtime phrases and key changes, and the fast finish is hilarious and fun. [I was a school music teacher[. I just saw Tuba Skinny live for the first time Sept. 8, 2023, they happen to stop and play at a small venue 2 hours from my house. What great musicians and people they are. if you've never heard them you must, hundreds of youtubes over the years.

Very impressive. Nevertheless, don't forget what Scott Joplin said : "Don't play ragtime fast. It is never right to play ragtime fast"

C&P this second hand, unverified story: I hope you also know the story behind this particular rag of Rach that you linked, it's particularly delicious. Cobb was at an upscale diner in New York with a friend, having just won a rag competition where they pick a song for you and you rag extemporaneously after getting about two minutes to think. So Cobb was bragging to his friend at lunch that he could rag literally any song. And his friend happened to spy Rachmaninoff in the corner eating alone and dared his friend to rag a Rach song (forget the name of it). Cobb said alright, sat down at the nearby piano and extemporaneously composed the rag that you linked. And naturally Rachmaninoff's ears immediately perked up, he sauntered over to Cobb as he was playing and just about scared the hell out of Cobb as he finished playing when Cobb realized who it was, saying something like, the melody is familiar but he didn't like the tempo :P Cobb later wrote the song down from memory and called it his Russian Rag.

I love it. I'm playing this on organ, and it's epic. Your rendition helped me craft the vision for how I want to play it :-) Keep it up.

I never really gave this rag too much attention, now that you point out that it's based on Rach's prelude it's a lot more interesting!

When Rachmaninoff heard what Cobb played he said "Nice melody, but the rhythm's all wrong."

Was this before you had the Petrof voiced? It sounds like it has plastic spoons instead of hammers xD

@@EthanUslan I guess I am exaggerating a bit, it is really really bright still though! Of course your playing overshadows that. Though if the piano was voiced and is still this bright you might need to replace the hammers, I can't think of any other solution apart from spraying them with fabric softener (that is actually a common technique for softening hard hammers, doesn't damage the felt like needling). It's expensive, but I've seen piano sound absolutely amazing with a new set of Renners.
