He was right to complain about insufficient weapons and during the first year and a half of the war, I felt that Russia was not sufficiently engaged for the objectives it wanted to fulfill. But these were the openly declared and _ostensible_ objectives. In every war, there are major and lesser objectives as well as public and hidden objectives. If we consider only the publicly stated objectives then it would appear that Russia was combatting the enemy inadequately, particularly for a superpower. I think that was intentional. Meaning, that the slow results were not due primarily to military inadequacies but out of a secondary objective to grind down and expend enemy weapons systems. Namely, the Western weapons that have been generously gifted. Russia knows it will eventually need to fight the West. We all know this by now and it's a sobering thought to consider the world could be thrown into a global conflict at any time. The Russians if anything are highly pragmatic and realists. They are preparing for the inevitability of a global war. They're also aware they cannot win unless the quantities of fieldable enemy weapons are significantly diminished to succeed. That is exactly what has been occurring while Russia massively increased military hardware production. Many in the West have voiced serious concern about depleted stocks. Suppose the war is not only being fought for the reasons Russia openly admits but also for the reasons I outlined. From that alternative perspective, it is going extremely well and it needs to continue in this manner for as long as necessary.
