It was being tested at 275km/h. The tests showed that the power line cable was being strained too much at those speeds, so they limited it to 250km/h on the straight strips of the railroad. This particular train is actually capable of going 400km/h, they've tested it at that speed on a wide gauge polygon too. This is more than what they tested the ICE 3 (Siemens Velaro D) train (which was 368km/h, 10% faster than the claimed 330km/h max speed), which has a narrower gauge. Due to the entire railroad between Moscow and St. Petersburg being conventional, they have a lot of twists and turns, so the average speed is around 215km/h out of town and 120km/h in the city. This little quirk makes it a sound idea to just put Siemens Desiro RUS (Lastochka) trains there, which would only travel at up to 160km/h, but would be a lot cheaper to operate - and so they do. Even if one or two Sapsan trains would have to be phased out due to wear and tear over the next few years due to lack of maintenance because Siemens has completely violated their big contract, took the money and ran, they're just going to put other types of trains like the Lastochka or the various domestic trains capable of going 200km/h. They already phased out the Strizh (Talgo 250) trains due to lack of maintenance (see: sanctions), so the Sapsan trains would be the next ones on the chopping block over the coming years, though they already successfully localized the production of the quickly-worn parts before 2020, like the train wheels and windows, so nothing should stop them from successfully operating the trains for 10+ more years.
The Sapsan has a top speed of 250km/h. And there is a new line under construction, planned to open in 2026, that would be even faster, over 300km/h and maybe even 400km/h.
so, the Line (Moscow-St.Petersburg) has a top speed of 250km/h (155mp/h). However, a new line is being built, that when opened, should have a top speed of over 300km/h and maybe even 400km/h (186-248mp/h)

@GayBoyRunning vladan1021 - TU to your vid! It's a nice thought but an A_HSV in our country is a long way off. Steam still has the passenger record time of 2 hrs between Sydney and Newcastle (which is one of our biggest cities). The famous 'express' that stops at our town barely goes faster than 100! That's why I put this together... Techno Music: Steam Trains At High Speed watch?v=0aJiDiZ_VPM ....definitely a lot faster :-).
