The war in Ukraine is driving a wedge between Russian speakers in Germany. Putin’s critics and supporters are fiercely divided. The conflict came to a head on May 9, which marked 77 years since Nazi Germany's surrender.
Barricades, strict regulations, and thousands of police on duty: German authorities predicted May 9 would get heated. Commemorated as "Victory Day” in many former Soviet countries, the date marks 77 years since the surrender of Nazi Germany. But due to the war in Ukraine, the occasion took on a whole new meaning. The divide between Putin’s opponents and supporters was brought into sharp focus. Authorities banned the display of Russian and Ukrainian flags in the hopes of avoiding escalation. But emotions were running high at dueling protests, with demonstrators breaking out in verbal confrontations over Russia’s war in Ukraine. DW reporter Oxana Evdokimova shows the divisions in the Russian-speaking community in Berlin and why many Russians in Germany support Putin and the military aggression in Ukraine.

In 2020, putin got himself re-elected as president for the umpteenth time. I and most of the my co-workers, employees, state employees, were FORCED by the directors (they too had no freedom of choice) to go and vote. Clearly most Russian citizens know that elections have always been rigged, so the protest of the opposition of Navalny (the most important activist for us, who was also poisoned and arrested) was to not go to vote. Those who didn't take part in the voting were fired and discredited. And this is one of the hundreds of nonsense that happens here every day. I agree with you in the matter, but we can't just do that. They are so-called Russian-Germans ("Russland-Deutsche"), which means they are either formerly displaced (to Russia) Germans who later had a right to be renaturalized, or their naturalized marriage partners or family members. Thus they are German citizens, and naturally can't be stripped of their citizenship simply for holding and expressing their reprehensible opinions. Infuriating, but it's all part of living in a constitutional democracy which we're trying to preserve here.

@@JD-yz2ex Since the middle ages, there were huge number of German enclaves in Eastern Europe. From Romania in the south to Prussia in the north. Communities. Crimea was populated by by it's own native population. Then Russians came and moved these people to khazakstan. The German enclaves were moved to Germany. This is happening in Georgia and Ukraine today. It's territorial borders conquered and her peoples displaced, jet here you stand by, observe, and do nothing. If Putin were to encroach on your land tomorrow, why should people care about you?

There is nothing wrong with Russian people celebrating May 9th and the the end old WWII but people of Russia should be denouncing Putin fascist and the war in the Ukraine and the war crimes being committed by Russian military. May 9th will now be looked at as a day of shame not pride

People of Russia are not the people of the Waste. Stop enforcing what or how others should think. Your Wastern values have no nerit outside your bubble box. It is precisely the uncaring and snobbish attitude of you Wasterners that has led to Russia acting in self preservation. Rectify your path or you will find that more emerging nations, far more powerful will strangle you. Be warned....
