The only orchestra that have played this piece and manage to bring out the true crisp brilliance of it... Tempo is just perfect, so lively. My dad, who teaches music at Paris Conservatoire, is so in love with this video. He says it truly is an overture and reminds him the his days in Austria. When I listen to this piece, the part that I judge the most is from 0:33 to 0:42. While others play it fast, this tempo is just perfect. Each section sound like a whole, MARVELOUS!

I'm using this to practice with. I'm the third horn in Civic Orchestra of Tucson and we're playing this in our next concert. I appreciate this recording because you can actually watch the conductor for tempo changes. Bravo and thanks.

Who are the crazy people in the audience walking around and leaving during the performance? This performance is riveting, how can they not be glued to their seat? Best performance I've ever heard of this piece!

Probably one of the best versions, ever! BIG Bravo to Zubin Mehta and the entire Orchestra!

At last... a performance that doesn't take it so fast that half the material has no chance to speak. It still sparkles at this tempo. Perhaps even more so. It's such a charmer, this overture.

this has ti be one of the best overtures. I love the Poet and Peasant - Suppe plus the Barber of Seville - Rossini also. There are so many great overtures. I always recommend these three, along with others.

@contrymnon You are right. Like you, i am very picky about the appropriate tempo for this work---and this orchestra and conductor are spot on. You can enjoy the shape, drama and pizzazz of the piece--so many conductors rush it and take all the drama out. Its a marvelous overture.

I love that you took your time with it! - It's not a piece that's supposed to be blazing fast! Your trombones were awesome with bringing out the Chernomore Whole-tone scale theme too. Glinka was actually the first to do a 'leitmotif' with that example, not Wagner... Awesome Job!

I looked this up because they played it last night at Cirque de la Symphonie. Absolutely stunning piece of music.

We're playing this in the youth symphonic orchestra in NW Arkansas along with egmont by Beethoven and pizzicato polka. All of those songs are great but this is truly the best. Also, if you guys have any tips on playing this, I'd be happy to hear them.

lmao good luck bud. Tough piece overall, start off playing well below half speed til you get a good feel for the song (helps to listen to a recording for this) and slowly crank the metronome up all the way to whatever your playing it at. (quarter=240?) For the most part rhythms and key signature aren't a problem so once you get the song up to tempo, there's surprisingly little you have to clean up. Just keep working at it, and good luck in your orchestra! ;)

the most important thing is that you need to remember to keep your wrist relaxed. this sounds easy but it's not; however, the work will pay off in the end because you won't get as tired, and it will sound better. most importantly, you'll be able to play it faster and at speed.

Amazing! Tempo is perfect! It's just my optimum tempo and attitude. This overture is truly being mistaken as a piece for racing amongst the orchestra? Play it faster doesn't mean better. Every single note is clean, crisp, bouncy, fun and spring just like an overture should be. Perfect I say. MAGNIFICENT.

Interesting overture. Does not sound Russian. Closer to a Schumann or Mendelssohn. However, the opera that it goes with is very Russian.

Dass ist in der Berliner Tiergarten (Berlin Zoo ... ground zero for Glinka's countrymen to destroy one of the world's greatest cities a few years after he wrote this. Russkies also killed about 10,000 wild animals at that time).

This sounds more like a military march with stressed accents and explicit pauses than an overture to an opera based on a tale by Pushkin. Even _students_ can do much better, e.g. these on RU-vid: watch?v=F6MI3S2ZFWo

Sergey Myasnikov Why do you people have to complain about this kind of music? It's a glorious piece that's supposed to be enjoyed, and when you complain it just annoys the crap out of the people who actually respect this piece for how difficult it is and the orchestra for how well they play it.
