yea I had to get one after I had some wires from the knotted brush fly off and stab into my shin. it wasn't fun but not terrible. If that's your eye your done. I saw on the moonshiners show the one guys hand was ripped to pieces from one. after seeing that Ive always been skeptical of grinders. that and pics online of safety glasses saving peoples eyes from grinding disks. there also hand for weedwackers/brushcutters

I work at a Honda dealer so I have done this a few times. Normally what I do is use a sawzall and cut on top and and on bottom of the bushing, pull the arm out, and back the bolt out with a pair of vice grips. nut is ok, arm is ok. replace bushing and bolt

@@SeanBZA Angle grinder is my go to for speed, control, not getting hand problems from vibration etc. It's just stupid dangerous if you don't respect it. Figured a video was in order.

@@briansmobile1 Figured so. I like them, but have a lot of respect for the blades after having had way too many turn to powder and shrapnel in an instant. Especially those thin cutting blades, they really want to turn to pieces with any slight mishap. But still use the angle grinder that I got from my father, who got it in the 1980's when they came out, and look after it. Got plenty of others as well, just like the first one.

I've used the 4 1/2" and a 7" hand held grinders. I got a chance to care for a 7" grinder accident. I actually saw the before & after, (was watching him from the scaffolding 20 foot up) laid a block, herd a scream, ran down and held, to stop the bleeding, and stabilize what was still clinging to his left lower arm which was 8" of his lower arm with a hand attached, as the 7" grinder without a guard kicked back as he was cutting 6, 1/2" rebar to 8 foot lengths. I've never removed a guard off a grinder since then, or even before that. I worked on that shopping mall for over a year. Never saw him return to work. To me it was a life changing accident, that could have ben prevented. Use all safety stuff provided with what ever your using. We all want to go home, the way we showed up at work.

By the way, you had made a video a few years back of welding vice grips to a slide hammer to pull out a cv joint axle. I did the same to do it on a Volvo. It worked perfectly. Thanks a bunch for that video...

Literally just changed a control arm on a 2004 civic, identical problem. I bought a new bolt from Honda and used the grinder to chop it off. Cheaper for the customer and less of a headache for me

6 years ago, even with the type of safety glasses you are using, during grinding/cutting, a piece of metal managed to fly in through between the glass and my face. It went well thankfully. Since that day i always prefer to use glasses that sit flush with the face, no gap. Protective equipment is very important :)

This is great man, thanks so much. I tried doing the upper control arm on my 2011 Crown Vic Police Interceptor and had to cut through the ball joint. When it came time to knock out the bolts for the control arm, they were completely seized in the bushings. Going to have to use my sawzall or grab a grinder to try and cut through the bolts so I can get the old arm off and knock the remainder of the bolts out.

Great video Brian. Thank you for helping to educate us on potential dangers. The only thing I could possibly add would using a face shield would help shield your face from flying debris including cut off wheel shrapnel. I have seen machinists literally save their face from serious lacerations when a chunk from a cut off wheel embedded in the mask instead of their cheek.

Good day Brian. Pls try at once hot acetic acid for rust removal, or you can make a gel of it with dry wood glue and apply in places where liquid will flew off. It's a magic thing - it doesn't hurt a metal, but dissolves ferrum oxide in oil form. Better not to breathe vapors of it, but it's not so harmful as it stinks. For me this 'vinegar' method is the best for stuck threaded connections, it takes some time to dissolve all rust to an oily form, but it's super effective (*with a help of metal brush tool and water to remove the rest of it).

I had the same problem with the right Lower Control Arm in my 1998 Lexus ES300. As a layman, I washed the Nuts bolts with car gas drawn in a cup with a brush. I waited about half an hour and then I tried and opened all the Nuts and bolts except the one behind Rooter as the pin was broken from both ends. As the grinder could not work due to space I tried to cut with a hand saw without success. Now I am going to try drill machine and hope will be successful. Wish me good luck!!!

My two cents...If you plan removal a week or two earlier... a daily application of penetrating oil of your choice in the problem areas allows the penetrant to work to it's full potential. The added vibration of driving the vehicle allows for even better results. Best to you and yours.

Biggest lesson I've learned is have any spare bolts with your suspension jobs. I got screwed on my job today because I didn't know once these seize you have to cut them. I got wanked by the sway bar links on my last coil spring shock job. I keep my guards on. Keep spare bolts! Thanks for the info!

Hi BRIANSMOBILE1 - I think I am going to invest in a *VENOM Mini-Inductor* (as I have had pretty much the same experiences with grinders). Even mini-air die grinders are a pain to work with in tight locations. Meant to ask you had you had one as and/or any luck with them? GREAT VIDEO!!!!

At least the thin wall cuts could have easily been made with a 3" or 4" air cut-off tool. They are much safer to use, since they typically stall when they get caught on something. Would have use the sawzall or air body saw for the remaining cuts (could even start the deeper cuts with the air cut-off tool). Air tools are way safer than electric IMO. Also, typically with those end links if they are garbage I just get the nut moving with the impact gun and then switch to holding it with a wrench and then use the impact to drive it through by putting it in the tightening direction. Might not be the best idea if you are saving it, but still, you'll be done in 5 seconds if the impact fits in there.

This is a little off subject but i wanted to reach your attention as quick as possible, so i went for your newest video. Im replacing a timing belt that snapped on my ej25 (06 forester) other than making sure timming is set right, is there anything i should do first before trying to put the belt back on? Im hoping no bent valves or bad pistons. Please help

Brian, I have 2004 odyssey and I changed both lower control arms comes with new ball joints ,2 end links and stabilizer bar bushings but I still hearing some clunking sounds when hitting bumps ,any suggestions is greatly appreciated,thanks

frozen bushing sleves just suck usally burn them out yea it stinks use a fan, keep water handy get bolts first not to tie up lift . did upper arm on a hummer 3. three frozen ran out of torch. gas. hacked it up with die grinder and sawsall my glasses looked like your lense.lol those bolts are tough.had them in stock roc auto good thing..got those pliers good tool. thanks for sharing.

On the sway bar links, I use a pickle fork to pry the ball out of the socket, then a vice grip on the exposed ball to hold it while zipping that nut right off with the impact. Takes less than a minute per side and no angle grinder necessary.

Ford pushed that in their marketing to save the company. I have to disagree unless the lawyers are around. It's a close second. If it's number one you don't get out of bed in the morning. It's #1 on the list of things to address before you start though.

Thank you for warning about the dangers of the angle grinder and explaining the precautions! I looked up pictures of angle grinder injuries... Horrible... Better safe than sorry! To not ruin the camera lens you could use a glass or acrylic pane as protection for the camera.

One other major danger with angle grinders is if the metal sags and bites the blade it can pull you into the car and your hands toward the blade as well as make the blade explode. It's a very good idea to use an angle grinder that has a clutch built in so that it stops the blade if it gets bound up.

Another tip for protecting delicate or flammable parts from the grinding sparks is purchase a Fire Blanket of the type you use in a kitchen. These form fire,spark proof barrier if you need it

Always where saftey googles or some sort of face shield, because one time I wasn't being careful I had gotten a piece of the metal fragment and fiberglass in my eye. Fiberglass is one of the materials that is in the grinding disk and it was a harbor freight brand.

I saw that you were projecting a bit of metal towards the radiator, is that a concern at all? I hate working around radiators, always feels like you'll break them if you touch them the wrong way.

Being cautious is a good thing. Being overly cautious is well... overly cautious. I was hitting the radiator fan shroud after sparks were up in there pretty far. How hard you press when you cut makes all the difference in how hot and how much material comes off the grinder.

I always wear a full face shield and a long sleeve denim shirt. Previous experience gleaned from millwright, machinist and auto mechanic work. Cutoff wheels are EXTREMELY dangerous, please take the extra minute to protect yourself.

My issue is with a horizontal bolt on the control arm of a 2008 Ford Escape. The nut is inside the subframe and cannot be accessed. It's so rusted that it won't move! My impact won't move it. I sprayed it with PB Blast for two days. It started to round of so I got a new bolt from Ford but I am afraid of ruining the threads on the welded in nut. I am going to spray it daily for a week then get a long breaker bar and try that. The other bolt and ball joint came out no problem.

I believe I would have cut the bolt with a sawzall and carbide or diamond blade before cutting the control arm. The sawzall is a scary tool also, but for something like this, much safer than the grinder. I say this from experience having used a sawzall to remove my lower control arm bolts recently.

PLEASE HELP I was taking out the axel on my 2010 Subaru inpreza for a clutch change and when i took the axel off a tiny spring came out Bent as well. Idk what it is or what it's called or what it does. Can anyone help?

While not everyone will have one, if you can get access to a portable bandsaw, it makes quick safe work out of those control arms.

Some kind of protective gear for the camera would serve a purpose for guys who do videos. I tried using a welding helmet over my camera, and it works but is annoyingly time consuming. Hot metal beads melt right into the glass lens.

probably it's just a method for helping fixate the rear joint socket into place. Instead of casting a shape into the metal casing to hold it. Now that I typed that weak speculation out I'm like, yeah what are those? Well they're not on aftermarket links anyway.

I wear a FULL face shield when I use mine . Depending on the model , they run at about 9000 to 12000 RPM ! Just imagine if that kicks back at you . That wheel is NOT going to stop on a dime . If a piece breaks off at that speed , think about getting shot . It is the most dangerous tool I have used . Respect it or pay the price .

Watched a welder bury a fresh five inch disk straight into his inner thigh, was a hairs breath away from the artery. Aside from getting a tourniquet or forceps on it immediately, he probably would have died on the spot had it been a touch closer...

Brian, there's no excuse for removing the guard. with it on the barrel side, it will protect your hand. You don't cut with that side of the tool anyway. People tend to choke up on the tool as the work progresses. Being afraid of a tool is NOT safer. When you're afraid you hesitate and lose focus. Just my opinion. Been using dangerous tools for over 50 yrs and have never been injured. Common sense is the best tool you have. enjoy your videos.

I've found its actually more dangerous with the guard on. Its one more piece to get snagged on something, and prevents you from closely watching the angle of what you are working on, which will lead to a dangerous kickback

All you guys thinking this was safe lol with no face shield if tgat d8sk explodes sefety glasses wont completly protect his eye. I know someone that almost lost an eye because no face shield and only glasses.
