Rustic Log Bridge Construction

This documents my construction of a simple single-span, deck beam-girder log bridge in December 2014. The bridge ended up being 3 ft wide by 17 1/2 ft long. Time to build was about 15 hours. Cost to build was about $30 in hardware and chainsaw gas.
I think this bridge should be good for at least a few years, but to make it last longer I could've taken the bark off the logs and kept the span to about 12 feet or less.
Supplies/Tools Used:
18" Chainsaw
Pick Mattock
Hatchet
Small sledge for driving nails
About 2lbs of 6" ring shank pole barn nails
Four 3' steel spikes to hold sleepers/abutments in place
Level
Four trees, each about 7" diameter at their base and 30'-40' tall

I like the stomp technique. City boy here trying to learn the ways of homesteading and I've had my share of stuck chainsaws. This was a helpful video for both bridge making and for not getting as pissed at my chainsaw! LOL!

Well good luck to you. I'm typically a dysfunctional mess when I'm doing these kinds of projects, but they usually come out okay anyway.

Nice looking bridge you have there. Might I suggest a bit of extra support under the middle of the stringers?

Samual Iam There is some flex there, you're right. It's kinda what makes it fun to use though!

Realizing of course that what I am proposing would have to be more secure...... LOVE YOUR WORK

I have thought hard about the products that i would like to build with and the Rustic construction theory had been one that has stuck in my minds. I love what you are doing, and I wanted to do something like this... using the trees on my property ...The base of the tree as the foundation for the deck and the tree itself for the top of the deck.... Keeping even more nature around me and not wasting much of it in the process of building the deck. If you know anyone that can make these thought into a reality... I would be willing to exchange a Wedding Gown and two Bridesmaids gowns in exchange for the work.... HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE

Good luck. I'd use slightly larger trees than I did if you're gonna run equipment over it.

What's your reason for alternating split logs with unsplit? This is what I will build, after watching a dozen others on spanning seasonal creek bed for n northern WI. Thanks.

No particular reason... really I was just trying to keep the walking surface level. I do recommend you debark the logs and treat them if you want it to last for a long time. After a few years this little bridge started to rot really badly under the bark.

Me and my friend are fixing a bridge to go over a creek to let four-wheelers cross how big should we make the bridge

Kyle, I wish I could give you some exact numbers, but all I can really suggest is to get logs that are quite a bit bigger than the ones I used. Also, I goofed up by not removing the bark from my logs, which caused them to decay after about 5 years (I had to replace them). So use the biggest logs you can manage, and spend some time up front debarking them so they last a long time.

Did you use the 3' stakes to fix the stringers to the sleepers?
@Sqeptick
@Sqeptick 4 года назад
Hi, Peg. No, those stakes were just driven in to the ground to hold everything in place laterally. The stringers were roughly attached to the sleepers/abutments using the longest pole barn shank nails I could find, and also by notching them to fit over the sleepers. Gravity did most of the work at that point, but they were at least somewhat secured with pole barn nails like I said.

How long will a bridge like this last?
@Sqeptick

I'm guessing I'll get 5-10 years out of it. To extend its life, I've pulled a lot of the bark off the logs since I made the video in 2014. As of now, it feels sturdy as it was when I first built it.

Wood, on wood, on earth.. not long. And no support underneath, with lots of weight on top. Not long. No offense.
