So good to see a master at work. I have a couple of Blakemar pipes - one a rusticated Matador which is a beautiful pipe and smokes great and is very economically priced at £24.

I was hoping you could show what you are stamping process looks like in more detail. I love to see what your whole device looks like. I'm trying to figure out how to stamp my pipes and I'm not having much luck.

@Flieger671 Yes, the polish used is 'Mylands Shellac Transparent Polish' - as recommended by Les Wood of Ferndown Pipes. Thanks for the comments, Mike

Do you still do this work? 10years? Does anyone know if they are still in business? Or if he is still alive?

Since I like a deep rustication on a pipe, I my try this on one of my inexpensive smooth bowl pipes.

Thanks so much for this video!! I've been making pipes for a while, and have seen a number of videos online about how to do it. It's like piecemeal, finding all the hints and clues on how to do it in a way that works for me, and for the tools I have. I learned a few things in this-- not just the rustication, which it looks like you've got a great system compared to my dremel!! I was interested to see the lighter to ignite the stain-- what is the purpose or effect of this? Is it a special kind of stain?

I found a bit like this at the hardware store-- it's actually called a rasp like this: www.solidrop.net/photo-4/3-sets-lot-6pcs-6mm-shank-bearing-steel-engraving-grinding-bit-rotary-bur-file-rasp-bit-for-rotary-tools.jpg I tried it today - I'm close to getting the effect you got... thanks! Now to figure out how to make the silver bands on the pipe shaft!

Is this a drill bit with the point ground down?

WOW! So much more work to rusticate, however smooth pipes are more expensive, why?
@singlikeyoumeanit3261
@singlikeyoumeanit3261 3 месяца назад
I think rustication is often used to hide inferior grain patterns and other defects in the wood, so a smooth pipe is more prized as it is from a more rare, better quality material.

What type of painting is this? It's some special painting for pipes?

Hello there, im just wondering what kind of colour you are using in this video, right after rustic? Burning it up etc.. Thanks for advice, great work!

Did you rusticate it with just a drill bit?
@xj9ox

Yep! @ 0:04 it the cutter looks like a drill bit with the point rounded slightly. Clever!

I think hes using a Dremel mounted in a vice and one of the bits that usually comes with the Dremel. Can't say for sure though. Just my thoughts anyway.

@1fatbastard because pipes are only rusticated when the grain of the wood is simple and rather uninteresting. Higher end smooth pipes are more likely to have an interesting grain and such brier is rarer and more expencive.

No wonder I don't like rusticated finishes... You have to have a good pipe then you ruin it to make it look "rustic", whatever that means. Looks more like tripophobia to me. Still, clearly skillful work, well done.
