In this video I give my approach to rustproofing using a Discovery 1 as an example. In the first part I concentrate on the surface preparation which is the most critical and often overlooked part of the job. Subsequent videos will look the application of surface coatings and the treatment of enclosed spaces.
This video shows my approach to rustproofing and isn't intended as advice for viewers.

Loving the tip to use swearing for those tricky, stubborn obstacles we all come across Bill! Great video as always Sire. Keep up the good work 👍

Yup swearing doesn't always free up the bugger but at least it makes you feel a bit better 😁

I agree with the use of foul language to remove stuck fastenings, wish I had even a bit of flat concrete floor to work on my 90

Thank you! I was looking forward to the next video installment after your alternator debacle. Good to hear you man! Great video and looking forward to the next one!

The next video has been a bit delayed. I find that more drastic repairs are required to the the chassis before I can get round to completing the corrosion protection. I will get there though.

Yup in our former industry (offshore) everything was grit blasted but I don't have the same resources in private life.

Great to see you back with more content and congrats on the choice of content, very relevant. I've done loads of rust treatment in my time, but still picked up a few things. Looking forward to the next installment. A Dremel (rotary tool) is also very good at getting into tight spaces, I have discovered lately. Also, being an angle grinder affectionado; I bought a Lidl / Aldi angle grinder that had speed adjustment. I cant tell you how great that was, to be able to adjust the ferocity of the grinder, wind it down and make it an almost safe tool to use. I havnt seen a branded (makita, bosch, etc.) grinder with speed adjustment, I know for sure Ill be looking for another model with that feature.

Thanks for the tips. I don't much like angle grinders but they are useful. I have a big one (10-12 inch, I forget) which is great for cutting steel when fabricating. Let's see if you agree with my views on surface coatings (next video).

Timely for me as I am going to be treating my Defender at the end of the Summer. I am currently considering whether I do it myself, as you have done, or I put it in somewhere that specialises in rust proofing. Now, it is a bit expensive to put it in somewhere but on the other hand my situation at home is by no means ideal for doing this kind of work so you've got to balance it up. But my main worry about putting it in is simply not knowing what they are actually doing, and whether they will pay attention to detail or not. And it's not really possible to inspect the quality of their work afterward, since the coating will hide a multitude of sins. So I have a confidence issue with third parties and this is the main thing that pushes me toward sucking it up and doing it myself.

Please do not take it to a rustproofer until you have seen the last video in this series.

@@defendermodsandtravels I will look forward to that, then!

@@brianhoskins1979 Please be a bit patient for the video. As a spoiler, the Discovery has been twice to a high priced rustproofer and look at the areas they didn't treat. Did you see the shot with the rear floor removed?

@@defendermodsandtravels I assumed that boot floor was being treated by you having _not_ previously been 'professionally' treated 😆 Patience - no issues. I am slowly installing an aux electrical system over the summer and delaying chassis treatment until that is done, at the end of the summer. So I will look forward to your videos in the meantime 👍

Legend! Thank u for the tips, will definitely follow your advice as preparing to do the same soon. What is your opinion on rust removal chemicals? Thank you sir.

Rust converters are good IMO once you have removed all the loose rust. Watch my next video on surface coating.
