If your looking at fan series the best one, in my opinion (and i think many others will back me up) is The Stories of Sodor by Victor Tanzig, the series is so popular its currently on its 4th season. He puts his own spin on the stories and characters and its a little more geared towards an older audience (not in a bad way) some of the best story telling out there on RU-vid. Definitely worth a watch.
The program is called Trainz; many Thomas fans use it for their videos. (I recommend Henry in T:ANE by Suddy Soap Bar) Yes they are old. Skarloey and Rheneas come from 1864 (oldest on Sodor). In fact, the youngest Steam engine besides Tornado turns 62 this year. There are at least 4 known controllers in the RWS: Fat, Thin, Small, and the Culdee Fell's. Fat - Sir Topham Hatt, runs the standard gauge Northwestern Railway (likes of Thomas and Gordon). There are at least 3 generations of Hatts: Topham Hatt the First when the railway started in 1915, his son Charles who took over in 1954, his son Stephen (who we saw as a child in Toby's debut) took over in 1984, and Richard who like took charge after 2005. In the show however, we've only seen one Sir Topham for the run of it, and his grandson Stephen looks a child in Season 1, and still that age in Season 24. "Only a small percentage of the world doesn't age. (Mostly people on TV)" Thin - Mr. Peter Sam (namesake of their #4 engine) runs the narrow gauge Skarloey Railway, under ownership of Sir Handel Brown (#3's namesake). Never featured on the show, and Sir Topham was shown in charge S4-7. Until S9 brought its own Thin Controller, Mr. Peregrine Percival (featured in this video). Small - Fergus Duncan, runs the miniature Arlesdale Railway.

Context on Rusty and the Boulder: An episode near the end of Season 5 - a somewhat controversial, but otherwise highly praised Season of Thomas, and the first not to use Railway Series stories as a basis. Some fans dislike how much this ep resembles Indiana Jones, while others admire the mysterious tone it plays with as to whether or not this boulder is alive. Here, T1E2H3 attempted a more realistic take like the RWS. Such as, the engines all being red, the boulder not unnaturally spherical, and its damage goes a short way rather than a long trip down the tracks.

It's been so cool to see how many different 'franchises' have come up that are similar to Five Nights at Freddy's. Sometimes videos like those don't really get me, but the style of animation in that series added to the horror atmosphere.
