Don't wreck your hands, instead start slow and work until you've built a bit of tissue tear. If you tear the skin too much, it won't heal stronger. I used to play until there was blood on the fretboard but that's not the best way to do it - it will take longer to heal and you won't recover. Runners do this too - don't overtrain and don't underrecover. Take it slow and play soft and with relaxed fingers. The point is to be accurate and consistent without overstraining. Think like a drummer playing rudiments: relaxation and comfort are the key signal that you're not hurting yourself. When you start to tense up, STOP.
