Rusty Old Hammer Restoration - New Wooden Handle

I found this old hammer head and decided to give it a face lift and a new handle. This had previously been on a fibreglass handle that my builder brother had snapped, its been sitting out behind the shed for a few years now and had become quite rusty. After polishing the head I made a new handle from Ash.

Handle install very clean. Golf Clap. Might need a bit more dome on ends to keep non-perfect strikes from making eyebrows or in this case squarebrows in the struck material. I'm sure there are smiths who strike so clean and consistent they can rock a hammer like that.

Nice job! I am wondering why some handles have a step where the head rested and some have a ever expanding taper. I just put a hickory handle on my sledge hammer and it had the taper. I am a little worried I did not quite get the head to rest on the widest part of that shoulder. Even though tight even before inserting the wedges I should have sanded the end of the handle I think. What do you think go or no go on the handle?

What type of wood was used for the handle. I've got around 6 or 7 old hammer heads that I've been wanting to clean up and put handles on. Naturally lowes, home depot and northern tools dont sell handles anymore. I assume they want you to buy a new hammer. But funk that I want my old ones working again. Just not sure what type of wood will best the strongest. Thanks in advance if you'll reply!
@DavidParker

C A I used Ash, which seems to be quite common, but hickory makes a good handle too apparently!
@hdryder1568
@hdryder1568 5 лет назад
@@DavidParker good deal thanks! Yea I know hickory is common with hammer handles. I could tell it wasnt hickory that you used by the grain. Once you oiled it. I think I'll give ashwood a try. You did a hell of a job to thats a beautiful hammer. I'm a newbie at blacksmithing and I'm acquiring all the tools gradually. That would be a hell of a flattening hammer you got there! 👍

@peteb2
@peteb2 5 лет назад
Why not a better choice of wood for the handle? Something that yells hard work. Looks a bit long in proportion to the steel head or is this now a purely decorative item? Just wondering with all that work you put into it one day you might need to give something a good whack or clobber and a shorter, thicker stouter handle would let that tool run as a fantastic club-hammer it’s meant to be.

I'm not sure why so many people seem to think the hammer head needs to sit against a "shelf" of sorts built into the handle. It should be a tapered fit that gets tighter the more it's driven on, and the wedge creates an opposite taper to lock it in place. A proper made hammer eye is shaped like an hourglass. Making an abrupt shelf not only prevent the head from being fully tightened, and creates a stress point where the handle is most likely to break. Just trying to be helpful; I've hung many hammers, axes, and other handled tools over the years, and it has taken experience, both good and bad, to learn this.
