Nice job! I don't remember if my father had any planes in his workshop area. There certainly weren't any mounted on his tool wall. When I moved I had a friend come over and dismantle it. It's now proudly displayed in a corner of my attached garage. Some of his tools are still in place on it.
Thank you! 😊 The brass knobs have patina, and I like preserving original patina whenever I can. I prefer that slightly aged look instead of the shiny brand-new look.
Hi, I also feel you do not need to make the sole completely flat. All the hand plane I have restored work just fine. I also used detergent and salt to remove the rush leaving in the solution a couple of days. The rust was easy to clean off. Next time us wax candles to coat the clean plane a couple of hours and apply the paint. Good job you are doing if you have the money to buy these expensive products.....
Nice video! I just bought one of these from a flea market and needed to know how it goes back together as far as flattening the sole, I'm told you should only flatten with the blade installed (and pulled back) because the shape changes when the blade is clamped. There may be a hollow otherwise.
Thank you! In my experience, the thing about flattening the sole with the plane assembled is a myth. It may be true on extremely flimsy planes, but these heavy cast iron ones don't flex to the extent of making a difference whether the plane is assembled or not. 👍
I accidently hit the thumbs down button and changed it to thumbs up. I got a notification that the video creator would be notified so just wanted to tell you it was a mistake in case it shows up. Great job restoring a beautiful old plane. Love it!
It's a Work Sharp 3000. It's pretty handy but you need to adjust to use your own sandpaper because buying the manufacturer's special stuff gets expensive fast! 😉
You shouldn't paint the sides, because if you're going to use it against something or in a shooting board (though these are quite small for shooting boards), the paint will rub off.
I have no idea how much one of these goes for, fully restored. A brand new one is around $60 or so, I think. ...and they aren't as good as the old ones, if you ask me. 😉
