I found this 'Bon Clou' can opener in the bottom of a box of auction tools I bought a few months back. It was in a pretty sorry state, and I nearly threw it out! But I decided it was worth a second chance, so I went ahead and started the restoration.
My original plan was to polish all the rust pits out of the sides, but once I cleaned it all up, I realised that wasn't going to be possible - it was too badly pitted. Sanding all the pits down would have left it way too thin!
I did try to save the 'Bon Clou' logo on the side, too, but it was such a thin stamping the little bit of paint I added filled most of it in. Ah well, I tried!

Sometimes we overthink a problem, when the answer is right in front of us. Building it newer, doesn't always mean better, these devices worked very well and didn't require any electricity. Thanks for sharing. 👍😁🇨🇱🇺🇸

I was surprised how well it works. Maybe it's because I'm left-handed, but I find this works better than the modern one we have in the kitchen. It's a keeper for sure!

I remember my parents having that can opener back in the 1960s. You don't see them any more. Good work!! Stay safe and well!! Greetings from Victoria (Australia)

Thank you! I was surprised how well it worked, I'm using it now in preference to the more modern one we have in the kitchen, it's actually better.

In the future if you want to save a logo like that you can put something inside the engraving to either protect it, or something that keeps the paint and filler front sticking. That or you can just etch it or engrave over it again.

I did try that, but it didn't work. I tried a few things off camera, but ultimately the engraving was just too thin , any amount of paint filled it in. Redoing the engraving is something I'd love to try sometime, but I don't have the equipment to do a decent enough job of that yet. Another time, perhaps!

Use a punch to knock the pins out

Unfortunately those pins are quite small. I don't have any punches thin enough.

Filler and paint on a food utensil? No, never. Leave as is or remake the part.

Paint just on the handle, which was painted to begin with... 🙄
