The Hollywood Reporter released a story today shedding more light. And as suspected, "Toxic Work Environment" played a role. Someone responded on Twitter they were on set for Season1 and everyone was patient, except one guy, and it was "that guy"
She is a brilliant actress. I did grow bored of the love triangle story line. But was excited about the potential spark for her to grow more into her self, her power and independence. Its a shame that they killed her character. Her ending on the show looks as brutal as the end of her relationship with show time. Gracefully handled Ruth
I can't even consider alison dead in the affair because she is one of the best characters in the show and she is attractive, including season 3 she has been great. To me she's always going to be alive
I felt the same way but I think they wrapped it up really well with every plotline and character. It really came full circle. It would have been better if Cole and Allison had been able to return to each other but they resolved that certain trauma in a satisfying way.
While the show is written as though the main characters are Noah and Helen, the viewers' emotional investment certainly goes to Cole and Alison. There were some nice elements to the Season 5 finale, but still, not everyone will want to wade through all the additional trials and tribulations to find out what finally happens to the Solloways.
The thing is, if she’s chosen to leave the show, she obviously had good reasons for that, since she is clearly very loved and appreciated for The Affair fans. I really wish that Ruth finds happines on this new show, and I’ll keep following her work! She is an amazing actress!! ❣️
Didnt know she was British. ❤ her accent. Kudos 2 her acting chops w/ an American accent ... She was GREAT on 'The Affair'. Gd luck w/ her next projects! 😀
The details of her departure from The Affair were eventually revealed, and are easily googled. Ruth was absolutely unforgettable and mesmerizing. She fell off my radar for a while and I'm eager to catch up on her works since.
Ruth Wilson is such an incredible actress! Was very upset too when they killed off her character in The Affair. Now we know why the show is wrapping up this year. The show can’t survive w/o the main character.
Just finished the last episode of Season 4 tonight and found the death of Allison a shocker and depressing, as if the show isn't depressing in its own way enough! I heard there will be a Season 5, but as far as I'm concerned they ended this season well enough to leave as is. I know all good things must come to an end, but too bad it couldn't have ended happily. With her and Cole reunited... Helen and Noah reunited after her doctor love's death and coming full circle, so to speak, back to the beginning. Would have been an interesting spin with all the two main couples having gone through all they had gone through. Would have been even better if it was all a story written by Noah after having seen Allison that first time and we find out it all never happened. But...not to be I guess. Don't think I will watch Season 5 with Allison gone. She was the center of the wheel around which all of the other characters circled.
I had not seen Luther, and heard such good things, plus I love both Ruth Wilson and Idris Elba, that i just bought the dvd of the first season so I can get caught up!
it's already been reported that she left b/c of lack of pay parity. When she says "I've never complained to Showtime..." that seems evasive. She wouldn't have had to c/o to Showtime - she could have made her point further down the chain of command. An opportunity for real change and awareness seems to have been completely lost.
It wasn't lack of pay... It just came out that she left because of the graphic nudity and they kept asking her to be naked for no work-related reasons at all. Then she also found out that while they were filming the sex scenes, the camera was hooked to some kind of monitor that would stream (allegedly) the scenes to other people or the web. Later, a few other writers and producers have lunch with the powers-that-be from The Affair and the Affair crew complains about Ruth and advises Lena Dunham to coach her how to get naked more often. They then start rating the bodies of other actresses and show screenshots of another Affair actresses naked and with a penis close to her face, indicating that they were taking pictures of the actresses while filming them during their sex scenes. The entertainment industry is dark asl and these actresses are falling for their lies
She left because of nude scenes she was not comfortable with , she felt they were gratuitous. The director Sarah Treem was too blame. She was bullying Ruth into sex scenes that were out and out abusive.

I like her so much!!! I can't believe she's British! I had no idea! These British celebs can really fool the viewer with speaking like a natural American. I also thought The Dr from "House" was American until I heard his British accent. I can't believe they killed Allison off, and also by the way, everything thinks she committed suicide by drowning, even till the end of the episode in the final episode of season 3. I would have suspected that they would have found out that Ben was the one who killed her. I guess we'll find out in season 4, otherwise they'll just leave it at that and make everyone think she killed herself when that's really not what happened. Did the writers/producers/director intend to leave it as a suicide when we saw what really happened?
I can't believe she's really gone from the affair I love her to me this whole show is about her & Noah with everyone else making it very interesting sad ending for alison
25 September 2019: Sorry The Affair is almost over - I can't imagine a Sunday night without watching Allison and Cole and Noah, etc. etc. I am continuing to watch, but not with the intensity of before. Ruth Wilson is amazing -- I'm going to be sure and watch her in The Little Stranger. Now I have to go back to see what happened to Cole....... I'm not liking this at all.
Well I didn't know this. I'm only like four episodes in the new season. But I definitely won't be watching with Allison gone. I like Sanaa Lathan but her character is-bleh. Super done with the show.
Just finished The Affair. Big shame they let her go because she didnt want to do so many nude scenes. She won a Golden Globe for christ sake. I think they made an example of her. 1 year later it and never would have ended this way. In fact, its totally ironic they made #metoo movement a story arc in S5...after she quit due to unjustifiable nudity requirements.
Eugeniya Leshenko Yes it is a spoiler for many; ever heard of netflix, binge watching, etc.?Everyone watches shows at their own pace these days. My comment was for the channel, not you.
Wow sucks she left. The 3rd season was awful. On par with Bobby Ewing in the shower. Was going to watch the 4th just because of her. I won’t now. But pleeeeassse fingers crossed we get the return of Alice on Luther! Also the character of Alice reminds me so much of the female prisoner on Oz who killed her kids
Notice how when she’s asked if it was pay parity, she shrewdly doesn’t just say no. No denial. She speaks in legalese and says ‘I never complained to Showtime’. Meaning, it could be about pay parity, but I didn’t GO to Showtime to complain about it. Meaning:clear as day, she was punished by Showtime and made miserable for speaking to OTHERS about the pay parity. Meaning: her terms of departure forbade her from publicly speaking about this despicable treatment. She became persona non grata as soon as she spoke to other outlets. While I’m terribly sad Showtime chose to mistreat her so egregiously, I’m still invested in Cole’s future so I’ll see it through to the end. And I will continue to follow Ruth’s work. I discovered her several years ago in Jane Eyre. She’s a magical performer who elevates everything she works on. Shame on Showtime.

I disliked her character, she was weak , manipulative and pitiful. Never could stand up for what she deserved and how she should have been treated. Very troubled character.
True, but she was also tired of having to shoot those sex scenes. In real life, she seems like a very very confident, solid woman. I can also assume that it wasn't easy playing a character like Rose, plus the American Accent, which she can do flawless.
James Sabatini I wonder what people say about your looks. We can't change how we look, unless we do plastic surgeries. Thankfully some people are better than that.
